S2E9: Jay McTighe on how to 'backward design' educational nirvana
03:59:53
False Dichotomy: Knowledge & Thinking
- It's a false dichotomy to separate knowledge from critical thinking; both are essential and intertwined.
- Teaching for understanding means focusing on big ideas, disciplinary thinking, and applying knowledge, not just facts recall.
Transfer Requires Deliberate Practice
- Transfer learning is a continuum from near to far transfer and requires deliberate, systematic teaching.
- Lack of transfer may reflect insufficient instructional emphasis rather than impossibility.
AMT Instructional Model
- Align instruction with acquisition, meaning making, and transfer goals.
- Teachers act as instructors, facilitators, and coaches depending on students' learning stages.

Today I am speaking with Jay McTighe about Leading Modern Learning: A blueprint for vision-driven schools, the 2015 book that Jay co-authored with Greg Curtis.
Leading modern learning builds on Jay’s previous work on Understanding by Design, to guide the reader through the process of taking vision statements really seriously, and then backwards planning your school in such a way that you WILL produce the kinds of young people who will be able to thrive and flourish in this bewildering and rapidly changing world of ours.
