What Is Inauthentic Assessment?

The most common connotation of authenticity, I think in our profession, is are we asking students to do things that reflect what people outside of school do with their knowledge and skills. The goal is not authentic assessment. But if our goals include transfer, then we need evidence that students can transfer their learning. And why do we want them to transfer so they can navigate real world issues and challenges? So, one, to me, there are two connotations for the term authentic, and I'll play it out in terms of what it means for assessment.
