What Does a Good Grading and Reporting System Do?
I would cast it as an essential question or a set of questions. What do we value in schools? How can we communicate effectively how well students are achieving these ends and growing in their capacities? That to me is what ideally a grading and reporting system should be able to answer. It's gotten corrupted in all the ways we know. But there's nothing inherently wrong with grades, nor should there be any devaluing the fact that there were important things that we want students to be able to do. And I think Tom's idea of this sort of 3P model undercuts some of the extreme critiques about getting rid of grades altogether.
