Developing Self-Directed Learners by Design
I've argued recently that the traditional approach to curriculum mapping may be outdated and should be reconsidered. What if we mapped out the curriculum through a series of rich performance tasks? A performance task asks students to apply their learning in realistic, authentic kinds of ways. Some would be discipline specific; many would be interdisciplinary. This task puts the burden on the student to navigate their research rather than being told what to do every step of the way. That I think would be a transformative conception of a curriculum assessment system with implications for what kinds of teaching and learning would prepare students to perform in those ways.
