There are three categories of task variables that impact students' willingness to put forth effort, and so forth. Task clarity is important: Do students know what's expected? Is this worth learning? Does this matter to me? If a student believes the goals might be worthy and relevant, but it's weight beyond their capacity to be successful, that induces stress. Authentic tasks reflect both real-world application and allow voice and choice for students.
