I love this idea about being really transparent with the students. It reminds me of a thing that we did in the Learning Skills curriculum. I noticed as a subject teacher, as a science teacher, that often we would say, oh, have a chat with your table partner about such and such,. if you go. Some kids would be able to talk at length, but some of them, the conversations would just stall quite quickly. There could be a whole range of reasons as to why that conversation won't go well. The invisible dynamics that exist between students that the teacher is often not particularly savvy to.
