Listening to your instincts and paying attention to how you feel can be a reliable indicator of how much you can push yourself in training or other aspects of life. Trusting your inner compass and having a high expectation for your health and achievements can lead to empowerment and self-discovery.
Self-experimentation and tracking personal data can lead to valuable discoveries and insights. Through self-tracking and experimenting with various factors such as diet, sleep, and exercise, individuals can gain a deeper understanding of how these factors impact their health and well-being.
Understanding the context and interpretation of markers is crucial. It is not only about judging markers as good or bad, but also understanding what they represent and their purpose in the body. Avoiding binary judgments can help in gaining a more comprehensive understanding of one's health.
A good coach not only has knowledge and expertise but also possesses intuitive understanding. The ability to observe, understand, and relate to individuals on a psycho-social level is crucial. A great coach can motivate and adjust based on their athletes' needs, recognizing patterns and adjusting training accordingly.
Proper movement and mimicry are key elements in understanding and improving our physical well-being. Mimicking others' movements can help us understand why and how we move, leading to personal growth and improved practices. The ability to recognize and mimic patterns is crucial in enhancing our overall performance and recognizing our own weaknesses.
The mind and body are interconnected, and understanding this relationship is vital in improving our overall health. The brain and physical movements are intertwined, and proper movement can positively affect our mental state and physiology. Through proper movement, we can influence pain perception and create new motor pathways that can alleviate chronic pain.
Sleep hygiene plays a crucial role in our well-being. Creating a sleep-conducive environment, such as a pitch-dark and quiet room, can greatly improve the quality of our sleep. Other factors, such as temperature and sleep positioning, can also impact our sleep quality. Taking hot baths before bed and practicing diaphragmatic breathing can aid in rapid cooling and relaxation, leading to better sleep.
Sitting for prolonged periods of time is a major problem in America as it compromises the function of the pelvic floor and diaphragm. This sedentary lifestyle leads to issues like bladder incontinence and affects overall health. To counteract this, it is crucial to incorporate more movement into daily life and minimize sitting as much as possible.
The way we sleep can impact our health and well-being. Many people have become extension-sensitive due to excessive sitting, which can cause pain and discomfort. Sleeping in a firm bed helps some individuals with flexion-related injuries, but for those who are extension sensitive, sleeping on a softer surface is recommended. Finding a bed that allows for spinal flection can greatly improve sleep quality and overall comfort upon waking up.
This episode features two incredible guests: Dr. Justin Mager and Kelly Starrett. We all drink wine and get crazy. Dr. Mager is my personal doctor and has helped me with dozens of my crazy experiments, complete with blood testing and next-gen tracking. Kelly Starrett is one of the top Crossfit coaches in the world, and one of my favorite PTs and performance trainers. His clients include Olympic gold medalists, Tour de France cyclists, world and national record holders in Olympic lifting and powerlifting, Crossfit Games medalists, ballet dancers, and elite military personnel. If you're interested in taking your body or mind to the next level, or attempting to become the guy from Limitless, this episode is for you. Enjoy!
