Suprasegmentals discussed in the podcast include stress, phonation, tone, and nasalization.
The podcast also explores the unique linguistic features of Danish and Russian numbers.
Deep dives
Danish Numbers
In Danish, there are special words for one and a half, two and a half, three and a half, and so on. The numbers 50, 70, 80, and 90 are derived from counting by scores. And the genitive singular is used with numerals ending in two, three, and four, while the genitive plural is used with numerals ending in five to nine. Danish also has a unique way of expressing the numbers 10 to 90 using a combination of different numerals and words.
Russian Numbers
Russian numbers exhibit an interesting agreement pattern. The ending of the noun in a numerical phrase is determined by the last digit of the numeral. For example, numbers with a final digit of two, three, or four use the genitive singular form of the noun, while numbers with a final digit of five to nine use the genitive plural form of the noun.
