The Importance of Switch Reference in Languages
Kamikawi is an Austronesian language. It's a good introduction to the idea of switch reference if you're not familiar with that. The other thing that struck me about the language was his relative clauses. In English and many European languages, it's completely loosey-goosey. But in lots of languages, what you can do in that relative clause is quite restrained. And he really thought about all of the possibilities.
