The History of Tone
Vowels get deformed by surrounding consonants. If you have a velar and then like a vowel, you'll usually get some sort of what's called the velar pinch. It's kind of hard to explain without saying it. But that's one of the ways to tell which kind of stop you have because most stops look same.
