#125: Jim Hallinan on Normalizing Healthy Living, the Real Reason to Ice Bath, & Nutrition Silliness

Jim Hallinan (@jimmynutrition) is a nutrition coach and co-host of The Other Side Lifestyle podcast. He’s also a father, a teacher, and a wealth of knowledge when it comes to nutrition and healthy living. Fun fact: he also owns a driving school!? An educator of all kinds! Jimmy and I see eye-to-eye on a lot of concepts regarding health and fitness. We both believe that health should be the default state, and that the absence of healthy behaviour should be the thing that’s seen as weird. Unfortunately, this isn’t really the case. Through his work as a high school teacher as well as with his nutrition coaching clients, he strives to lead by example. Read: instead of being all talk, he actually does the things. Especially with kids and impressionable teenagers, this is important. We need people to be able to look up to who are doing the things that we want to do. This includes ice baths, walking on the grass barefoot, and other “weird” stuff. Do we need “science” to prove everything, or do we just need to feel good? We discussed some of these activities and how/why Jimmy realistically uses them in his life. Health and nutrition is serious, but we’ve also gotta be able to laugh about it and enjoy our lives. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did, and share it with your friends so we can all laugh and learn together. Be sure to follow Jimmy on IG @jimmynutrition and check out The Other Side Lifestyle Podcast for incredible fitness, nutrition and health content. The best way to support the podcast is to share the episode with a friend. #124: Aram Grigorian on Improvising in the Gym and How to Stay Fit While Partying All Summer Long

Aram Grigorian (@4weeks2thebeach) is a nutrition coach and co-host of The Other Side Lifestyle Podcast. He’s a straight shooter and tells it like it is, and I think that’s why we got along so well so quickly. His honest and blunt approach to delivering fitness and nutrition information is much needed in a world full of lies, deception, and coddling. We recorded this episode just before Canada Day/4th of July weekend and so naturally that was top of mind. While that weekend has past by the time you listen to this, it certainly won’t be the last party of the summer, or of your life. There’s a lot of opinions out there on how to party and stay fit and whether you should or shouldn’t and everything in between. We spoke about this quite a bit, cut through the noise and gave you what you need to hear. Along the lines of taking ownership over your partying decisions comes training. Too often do we see/hear people not knowing how to improvise or navigate a situation in the gym despite a plethora of information. We gave a ton of practical advice about to make exercise adjustments, machine adjustments, and generally how to seek out the knowledge to be able to adapt to any situation you find yourself in. I very much enjoyed this conversation. Aram and I are on the same wavelength in regards to speaking honestly, and giving people the truth they need to hear. It’s refreshing, in my opinion. Aram is constantly posting great content on IG and you should be following him there. Just as well, be sure to check out his podcast, The Other Side Lifestyle for more insights and fun discussions on all things health and fitness. The best way to support the podcast is to share the episode with a friend. Jackson Lohr (@lohrsportsperformance) is a personal trainer and sports performance coach who works with people from all walks of life. A former competitive athlete himself, Jackson had to learn how to train to keep up in sport, and to battle through and heal from several injuries. Now, he gives back everything he’s learned, training client both online and in person in Stuarts Draft, Virginia. When you train people in long enough, you start to hear some of the same excuses coming up again and again in different forms. They’re all valid, but usually, there’s a workaround. In today’s episode, we talked about some of the most common “excuses” people give as to why they can’t workout, or can’t stay on point with their fitness and nutrition. We definitely had some fun with this one, but also gave a ton of practical advice as to how to actually overcome these excuses. Be sure to follow Jackson on IG, and listen to his brand new podcast, Fitness for Life. #122: Daniel Raz on Losing Weight Without the Gym, Cultivating Motivation, and Chat GPT for Fitness

Daniel Raz (@DanielRaz_Fit) is an online fitness coach who specializes in helping men lose weight without going to the gym. Born in Israel, grew up in China, and now living in Canada, Daniel has a ton of experience with different fitness cultures and building his own confidence through fitness. “Without going to the gym” is not to be mistaken for “no exercise”. There are tons of totally valid reasons one might not want to or be able to regularly hit the gym. Are these people doomed? Of course not. At-home workouts can be very effective when done correctly. Daniel specializes in working with this population of people, and we spoke about all the benefits of working out at home. One very interesting topic of conversation we had was surrounding motivation. You can watch all the hype videos you want on youtube, but where does motivation actually come from? Doing the thing, and getting results. When you see the plan working, you are motivated to keep going. Towards the end we got into the hot topic of AI and gave our thoughts on how it’s going to impact the fitness industry and fitness overall. Interesting chat, and tbd as to how this all plays out… Daniel is most active on Twitter, so be sure to follow him there for updates. Also check out his website. The best way to support the podcast is to share the episode with a friend. #120: Stephen Campolo on Binge Eating, the Psychology of Fat Loss, and Weight Loss Injections

Stephen Campolo (@stephencampolo) is an author and online fitness coach specializing in fat loss. He lost over 100lbs himself, and has since been coaching others to do the same. Stephen is a good friend of mine and he’s an incredible source of knowledge, insight and experience when it comes to fat loss. We got really in the weeds discussing the psychology of fat loss, which is arguably the most important thing. Everyone knows more or less what they should do, but why do we struggle to actually do it? Stephen was also very open with his struggles with binge eating which I think a lot of people can relate to and learn from. We also spoke about the weight loss injections (Ozempic/Wegovy/Mounjaro) that are making headlines everywhere. We got into what they are, some experiences with them, who they might be best for and a lot more. It’s worth noting here, neither of us are doctors, so please discuss any medical interventions with a qualified doctor whom you trust. Stephen announced he’s working on a new book projected to be ready early next year as well, so be sure you’re following him to stay tuned for updates and to learn as much as you can from him. The best way to support the podcast is to share the episode with a friend. #119: Derek Mendoza on Transforming Your Identity to Become Healthy, Wealthy & Happy

Derek Mendoza (@findyourprime) is the Founder of Find Your Prime, co-host of the Raise the Bar Fitness & Business Conference, Former S&C Coach of the Seattle Mariners, and an all around incredible person. Get in touch via IG, or click here to download his free 5 Step Framework on how to create your first or next course, program or workshop. I met Derek at the Raise the Bar Event, (I highlighted my experiences in this episode #110) which is an absolutely incredible event that I would highly recommend any fitness coaches to attend next year. This conversation was a perfect extension of the event where we got to expand upon some of the conversations from the weekend, integrate the lessons, and continue to connect and build community. On the surface this episode will be much more relatable to coaches, but building a business and transforming your body are not all that different. Derek speaks a lot about transforming your identity to reach your goals - both in business and in fitness. Listen closely to this episode, there are a lot of nuggets if you pay attention. Be sure to follow Derek on IG @findyourprime and stay in touch via www.fyplist.com. The best way to support the podcast is to share the episode with a friend. #118: Miles Suing - How To Include Fitness & Nutrition into Your Busy Lifestyle for Optimal Outcomes

Miles Suing (@milesstrength) is a personal trainer and online fitness coach from Toronto, Canada. Miles has gone through all of the phases of evolution of a fitness lover, and understands how to use fitness as a tool to enhance your life. Miles also runs a free Facebook group providing community and support for busy people to make fitness a consistent part of their lives. You can join the group here. I believe that part of being a great fitness coach is using yourself as a bit of a testing ground. Various workout programs, competition, nutrition approaches and everything in between. We can read all the theory we want, but until you actually go do it, you never really know. Miles has done all of the things. Powerlifting, weight gain, weight loss, various diets, you name it. He uses all of this experience and wisdom to coach his clients to make fitness a part of their lifestyle. Meaning, incorporating fitness so that you can do the things that you love to do, rather than incorporating fitness so that you can just get better at fitness. Everyone’s life is pretty busy these days, and that just adds to the complexity. We speak throughout the episode about strategies and methods to include fitness in with everything else you’ve got going on. I think there is a TON of value in this conversation, and one that can help everyone. Be sure to follow Miles on IG, and join the Team Long Game Facebook Group. The best way to support the podcast is to share the episode with a friend. #117: How To Get Shredded for Summer in 6 Weeks - A Complete Guide

In this episode is everything you need to know about how to get in shape for summer (or any time of year) in a short period of time. I went through the full list of things you need to be doing, in detail in this episode. An important note: I honestly do not recommend you do this. You should be taking care of your health and fitness all year round and “preparing” for next summer, right now. However, I know that many of you won’t and so I figured it’s best to help you do it right. The most important part of this episode is the second half, where I discuss what to do after the 6 week shred - the plan after the plan, if you will. This is where most people mess up, and what leads people to saying “diets don’t work”. I hope you enjoy this episode and learn something valuable. Share this with your pals who are about to start another silly crash diet for summer. #116: Bryan Fitzsimmons on Busting Fitness Myths for Women & The Truth About Super Low Calorie Diets

Bryan Fitzsimmons (@coach_fitzz) is an online fat loss coach who specializes in working with mom’s over 40, and host of the Fit40 Podcast. Bryan and I met at an event in Dallas where we connected with many other amazing coaches and thought to keep it rolling with this discussion!Since Bryan specializes in coaching women, we spoke about many of the most common myths that women have surrounding fitness and nutrition. It’s a shame that these myths exist, but they do, so it’s important to regularly have these discussions to spread correct information and set you on the right path with your health and fitness. One of the biggest and possibly more harmful myths is the idea that super low calorie diets are needed to lose weight, and are the only way to do it. This is simply not true, and often causes more harm than good. We discussed this and gave some practical tips as to what you should consider doing instead. Please share this episode with a friend or someone you care about - your own mother would be a great option!
