#80: Jef Catapang on The Hero’s Journey, Cold Baths and Sauna at Othership, and Overcoming Burnout

Jef Catapang (@eventhestrong) is a guide at Othership, a mental health advocate, and martial artist. A former journalist who went through burnout and has emerged reinvented as his current self, he wants to use his experience to help and guide others through their own journey. For reference on what Othership is, please check out this episode for more of the background and details of what makes it so special and how it came to be. I took a class with Jef at Othership called “The Hero’s Journey”. Jef led us through the ups and downs of the journey as the sauna got hotter and hotter and ultimately concluded with the cold tub – where we emerged renewed, refreshed, and with new tools for the next journey. The Hero’s Journey is a literary concept that sort of outlines most of the stories we all know and love, across time and across cultures. The beauty of it is that we ALL embody it in some way. YOU are the hero of your own story. We spoke at length about how to think about this and apply it to your own life in a way that might be extremely helpful. All of these tools - the cold, the heat, the breath, the movement, the writing, the isolation, the community, the hero’s journey – are bits and pieces of what Jef has used for himself, and what he hopes to pass along to others. This is an episode you’ll want to share with your friends, and likely one you’ll want to bookmark to revisit. Be sure to follow Jef on IG, and check out Othership to take a class with him if you live in Toronto/GTA.I’d love to work with you and be your coach to help you achieve whatever fitness goals you have set for yourself. #79: Why Being in Shape Makes Vacations Better

I just got back from a short vacation and while I was away, made some brief observations on how fitness and travel are tied together. One thing I didn't talk about in this episode, was anything to do with fitting into a swimsuit, or getting "beach ready". I probably would have, but honestly the thought hadn't crossed my mind until I sat down to write this description. The "vacation body" is pretty well the least important or exciting thing about why being in great shape makes your vacations better. You might get away with some of this now, but I encourage you not to ignore it. What will happen 10 years from now? 30? What about when you're 90? Start now. I referenced another podcast episode I appeared on as a guest with John Martirosyan, talking about health sovereignty, and you can find that episode here. If you accept the call, and want to get in shape so you can travel freely forever, I’d love to work with you. #77: What's the Point of Hiring a Personal Trainer?

This question came up on my Instagram in a very nonchalant way which turned out to generate some amazing conversations, which led me to thinking about it much more. And so here we are. I discussed how this came about, why I think having a trainer is extremely valuable, or possibly completely useless, and my thoughts on everything in between. After listening if you determine that it's about time you hired a trainer, I'd love to work with you. Fill out the form at the bottom of this page to apply, and we'll be in touch! #76: Dean Guedo on Walking WAY More, Outworking Your Diet, and Weight Maintenance

Dean Guedo (@walk.more.king) is a nutrition coach who has a simple message: walk more, WAY more. A former athlete and teacher turned trainer and fellow Canadian, and now full time online nutrition coach. He also contributes to the Compound Performance Radio podcast. If you have listened to any previous podcast episodes, or follow me on IG, you know I am a HUGE proponent of daily outdoor walks. But I think Dean even takes it further than I do. We should all be walking and move WAY more. 10 minute walks are great, but for most of us that’s not really enough to move the needle. You’ve tried to eat a bit less and that works, but for how long? Maybe the answer is to massively increase your walking output. We also spoke about the concept of weight maintenance. Not gaining weight is a good thing. Most people gain a little weight each year. If you can walk enough to offset that, you’re doing great. There are tons of environmental and logistical challenges to getting more movement in the day, and we went over this. It’s normal, but not moving is not an alternative. We also finished off with discussing some future outlooks of the health of the population, and how increasing walking can make a massive difference at the population level for years to come. If this episode doesn’t motivate you to get up and go for a walk, I’m not sure what will. Get up, and get out there. Be sure to follow Dean on IG, and check out the Compound Performace Radio. I’d love to work with you and be your coach to help you achieve whatever fitness goals you have set for yourself. #75: Jon Vlahogiannakos on Being A Jacked Dad, Flexible Dieting, and Good Goal Setting

Jon Vlahogiannakos (@strongjonfitness) is a fitness coach who wants to continue to be the most jacked dad around. His main focus is working with parents to improve their health and fitness without worrying about extreme measures. He also hosts the Strong Jon Fitness Podcast. You can learn more about everything he’s got going on at strongjonfitness.com. Being a parent makes it hard to stay in shape. Something I don’t currently have any personal experience with, but Jon does. That being said, it doesn’t mean you have to settle for a “dad bod” if that’s not what you want. You can still strive to be in incredible shape for your whole life. And there’s nothing wrong with this, it isn’t vain. Your health matters, and liking your body is part of that. We spoke about some flexible approaches to help with this, and how/why fitness matters as a busy parent. Overarching all of this was the concept of setting goals that challenge you, and don’t let you settle. If you want to be a jacked mom or dad, then go do that. Just because “parents don’t have to look that way” doesn’t mean you have to pull up short. If you want something, go get it. This was a very enjoyable conversation. Excuse my voice throughout this episode, was dealing with some wild seasonal allergies. Please share this episode with your friends who are parents, and help them out! Be sure to follow @strongjonfitness on all social media platforms, check out strongjonfitness.com and tune into the Strong Jon Fitness Podcast. I’d love to work with you and be your coach to help you achieve whatever fitness goals you have set for yourself. #74: Azaria Glaim on Staying Power for Fitness (and Life) Success, Building a Positive Mindset, Living Intentionally and MORE!

Azaria Glaim (@az_fitness) is an IFBB Professional Bodybuilder and an IIN holistic health coach who’s goal is to help you transform your life from the inside out through mindset and physical coaching. Azaria is an incredibly insightful individual, and really one of the true genuine people who care about others. You can learn more about her coaching at risedaily.ca.Azaria transformed her own life when she began lifting and got into bodybuilding and has since been passing those lessons along to others. Throughout the conversation, we spoke about the profound effects fitness can have on your life – in, and outside of the gym. She was identified by a bodybuilding coach as someone who would excel in bodybuilding early in her lifting career. We spoke about why this might have been, and it came down to one thing: effort and intensity. The most important variable in your success is the one you can control, and that’s your effort. The ability to work hard, and to continue working hard is what will make you successful. Azaria is a big proponent of positive self talk and re-framing activities in a positive light. She recommended a book: “What to Say When You Talk to Yourself” by Shad Helmstetter. Shifting focus from negativity to positivity is a powerful tool to accomplish any goal, and it’s also true with fitness. This was an amazing conversation, and one we’ll certainly have to have a part 2 on! Be sure to follow Azaria on IG and visit her website to keep up with everything she has going on.Share this episode with a friend who would enjoy or benefit from it! #72: Jordan Syatt on Whether Fitness is Too Soft, Developing Critical Thinking Skills, Psychology in Fitness, and MORE!

Jordan Syatt (@syattfitness) is one of the most successful and well-known figures in the online fitness space. His content has been viewed by (and helped!)  millions of people. Jordan is one of the real people in fitness, who tell it like it is, and give genuine advice. All that said, it was an absolute pleasure to speak to Jordan on the podcast. You can find him on any platform by googling his name, but some quick links to IG, YouTube, his Inner Circle, and his new book “Eat It!”. Years ago Jordan trained at the famous Westside Barbell as a powerlifter. Westside is anything but “soft” and so Jordan and I spoke about whether fitness has over-corrected from the old school ways. We also spoke about the role that psychology plays in achieving one’s fitness goals. Chances are, most people can distinguish which is the healthy snack between an apple and a donut, but why do we all choose the donut? Maybe it’s not for lack of knowledge, but something about our psychology that we must work on to reach our goals. This led into a discussion about critical thinking, and what gets Jordan excited about posting content and helping others. Hint: the answer isn’t about explaining a calorie deficit for the 9 millionth time, although that plays a role. This was an incredible conversation that I’m so happy to share with you. Please share this episode with a friend who would enjoy it, and give it a 5-star rating (Jordan’s words) wherever you listen.I’d love to work with you and be your coach to help you achieve whatever fitness goals you have set for yourself. #71: Brooke Morrisseau on Body Transformations, Lifestyle Fitness, and Self-Awareness

Brooke Morrisseau (@brookem_fitness) is a coach from Florida who has a Masters degree in Exercise Science having just completed her thesis in female body transformations. Brooke was an athlete growing up and found fitness, and specifically bodybuilding, as she transitioned out of other sports. After spending a few years working on bodybuilding, Brooke has realized that for the time being, that’s not what she wants, and is now much more interested in lifestyle fitness. Simply, being fit and enjoying exercise without a competitive or restrictive environment. This is where most people fall, as most of us are not professional athletes. While it sounds simple, it’s much easier said than done. Having just gone through a huge physical transformation herself, Brooke is now passing that knowledge along to help you on your fitness journey with your own body transformation. Among everything we spoke about, there was one central theme that kept coming back: self-awareness. This is where the transformation starts, and we spoke a lot about this throughout the episode. If you are ready to transform your body, you will enjoy this episode and should send it to a friend who is also ready. Follow Brooke on IG to get in touch with her about coaching as well. Share this episode with a friend who would enjoy or benefit from it! Comments, questions, and feedback are greatly appreciated.
