#50: 5 Lessons Learned About Fitness and Health Through the First 50 Episodes... Plus Some Reflective Thoughts and Feelings

Time really does fly by, and it's a little crazy to think this podcast is already 50 episodes deep. I'll spare you the cushy feelings here because I'm sure there's enough of it in the episode... but keep reading to the end of this description for a small surprise. The first half or so of this video is me giving out some much deserved thank you's as well as sharing some behind the scenes stuff of the podcasting world and how this all works. I always enjoy taking you on the ride with me, and I always wondered these things before I started. The second half of the episode I summarized the 5 most important and consistent lessons I've learned thus far from all of the guests. Surprisingly or not, many of the conversations have arrived at similar conclusions but all from different angles. Which in my opinion is the most amazing part of it. These lessons all pertain to fitness and health in some way or life overall, and if I found them valuable I thought you might as well.SPECIAL OFFER: this podcast will be published on December 29th. #49: Bulking Season is Over! 6 Months to Get as Big and Strong as Ever, Here's How it Went...

If you're not following me on Instagram you should be @danielyores where I've been documenting more of my training and eating and everything to be in bulking mode over the past 6 months. Now that it's over, I wanted to record this podcast to go over why I did it, how I did it, what the results were, what I'd change, how I'd advise others to do it, and what's coming up next as far as my own training goals. I mentioned it several times throughout this episode but it bears repeating: what I did worked for ME. It is by no means the best or most perfect or most applicable way to do it. The purpose of sharing what I did is to spark some ideas in your head, maybe allow you to consider some things you may have not thought about, and then use all of that to start to formulate your own plan. It's been a really fun and successful 6 months of training, and I'm ready for the next phase. Also, as mentioned towards the end... opening up more 1 on 1 online personal training spots for January. Send me a DM on IG or Twitter if you'd like to work together on your personal fitness goals.I would greatly appreciate any comments, questions or feedback. Share this episode with a friend who would enjoy or benefit from it! If you enjoy this podcast, I would be extremely grateful if you subscribed and left a short review on iTunes. #48: Dr. Cathy Tran on Making People Smile, The Interconnectedness of Physical and Mental Health, Living Your Perfect Life and Being the You-est You You Can Be!

Dr. Cathy Tran (@drcathyyy) is a chiropractor and a wonderful person. She treats patients at Eikonic Health + Wellness in Vaughan, Ontario. As we spoke about in the podcast, Dr. Cathy LOVES being a chiro, but she also loves to be herself and enjoy all that life has to offer; spreading smiles along the way! This conversation is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. I certainly was smiling throughout the entire conversation. Cathy has an incredible outlook on life, and this translates directly into how she cares for her patients. She cares deeply about the whole individual; not just their immediate physical pain. This is something that cannot be faked, and can only be genuine. We spoke a lot about how connected our mental and physical health is. They both feed each other, and we must take steps to work on all aspects of this. Whether it’s going for a walk, going shopping, or making a stranger smile, there are wonderful things we can do to help ourselves and each other. Cathy says she loves her life and that it’s perfect. This is not to say that she doesn’t have her troubles, but more so to highlight how she perceives everything around her. Up to and including the privilege of being a chiropractor where people trust her with their care. This whole sentiment was sprinkled throughout the conversation. We are all multifaceted human beings. We are not our jobs, or our pain, or any one thing. And the best part is, there’s only one of YOU. Dr. Cathy says (via Dr Seuss) that nobody is “you-er than you”! We should all strive to be the you-est you that you can be! Follow Dr. Cathy Tran on IG (where she shares tons of amazing food) and contact Eikonic Health + Wellness to book an appointment for any chiropractic care. I would greatly appreciate any comments, questions or feedback. #47: Inam Saleem on Sustainable Apparel with Inner Mettle, the Benefits of Earthing, Lessons Learned Living Around the World, the Value of Difficult Physical Training, and More!

Inam Saleem is the founder of Inner Mettle. Inner Mettle is an apparel company that aims to create products that provide superior functional benefits, while considering the socio-economic and environmental implications. You’ve probably never thought about the materials used to make our clothes, and the impacts they have on our personal health, as well as the health of the planet. Well, Inam and Inner Mettle have, and they’re set out to improve the way we use these products.  I was first introduced to Inam to discuss OS-1 as well as the Inner Mettle Earth Connect shoe. Two extremely exciting projects that we discussed throughout the episode. OS-1 hasn’t made it’s way to Canada yet, but it will soon enough. I’ve been wearing the Earth Connect shoe for many months now and I find them fantastic both as simple shoes, as well as a way to experience the benefits of earthing when going barefoot is not an option. Inam has lived all over the world, and as you might assume has learned many lessons about different cultures and ways of life. He’s also had a wide range of life experiences from running a marathon barefoot, to visiting Mount Everest, to building multiple companies. All of this lived experience has led to the creation of Inner Mettle.  There is a lot to unpack in this episode as we covered quite a bit of a ground very quickly. Definitely worth a second listen! You can check out Inner Mettle on their website, on IG as well as follow along with the developments of OS-1.I would greatly appreciate any comments, questions or feedback. Dr. Isaac Norman (@isaacnorman.dc), D.C. BKin (Honours) graduated Cum Laude from Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in 2020. Dr. Norman grew up in a coastal community family that fostered a love of nature, community, healthy eating, respect for the ocean and outdoor activity as a way of life, including hiking, biking, kayaking and surfing. He now treats patients as a chiropractor at Bloor Yonge Chiropractic in Toronto. His experiences during his formative years led him naturally and inevitably to a career in health care. As an evidence-based practitioner, Dr. Norman is a primary health care professional with expert knowledge in spinal and musculoskeletal health, emphasizing diagnosis and patient centered care. Dr. Norman provides a combination of treatment styles to treat a spectrum of patients and conditions. His approach to treatment includes diversified chiropractic adjusting, patient rehabilitation and education. In case you were unaware, the ocean is pretty powerful. You can’t go into the ocean and expect to impose your will. You’ve got to be prepared, make a plan, and then execute. Similar to fitness, things are not going to just happen by accident. You need to understand what you’re doing, make a plan, and then execute that plan. We spoke at length about the mindset going into training, as well as the mindset applied to the way Dr. Norman treats his patients. You must use a well thought out, and individualized plan that takes into consideration all possible factors. We also spoke quite a bit about Crossfit as a sport, activity and community as it’s something Isaac has recently been getting in to. You can connect with Dr. Isaac Norman on IG. If you live in Toronto, he treats out of Bloor Yonge Chiropractic, and you contact the clinic to book an appointment here. I would greatly appreciate any comments, questions or feedback. #44: Holiday Eating Tips to Avoid the Stress of Food, and Enjoy the Holidays

All holidays seem to be centered around food. All cultures, all times of year, all over the world. And yet, so much stress exists around eating through the holidays. The short answer is don't sweat it. One meal won't make or break any progress. The real answer, is it's stressful, and we need some tangible tips to help us through. This podcast will be relevant for any holiday at any time of the year. I referenced Thanksgiving as that's the time of year right now, but all are the same. #43: John Canlas on Working as a Dietician in a Prison, Organic vs Non-Organic Foods, Eating Real Foods to Lose Weight, and MORE

John Canlas (@johncanlasrd) is a registered dietician living and working in the Bay Area in California. In addition to his private practice working one on one with clients on their nutrition, he also works as a dietician for a prison in California. Who knew prisons had dieticians? Not me that's for sure. But, some of them do. Essentially to ensure they are eating a balanced diet and have access to the food they need to keep healthy. John plays this role, and we discussed it at length in this podcast. In addition to ensuring the prisoners are well fed, John also runs a private practice where he sees patients to help them with their diet. As a registered dietician John in qualified to advise patients on dietary interventions for medical purposes, such as patients who have diabetes, kidney disease or heart disease. This of course requires a much more in depth understanding of nutrition and physiology than some giving generic lifestyle/diet advice. John also gave an interesting perspective on the organic vs non-organic food debate. It's more complex that simply what is "healthier" and labels simply do not tell us everything. If you're in the Bay Area you can reach out to John in person. He also works with people online from around the world. You can connect with John on IG or through his Facebook group.

#42: Tanner Shuck on Living a Positively Unbalanced Life, Mastering the Basics of Exercise and Nutrition, Leading by Example, and More

Tanner Shuck (@tanner_shuck) is a strength and conditioning coach and fitness writer currently based in Dubai. After playing football at Rice University in college, Tanner found Crossfit and pursued a career in fitness. Tanner won the Dubai Fitness Championship in 2014 but unfortunately had been sidelined with injuries shortly after. Since then, he’s been a coach for Crossfit and high performing athletes, and these days works mainly with general population clients to improve their fitness, and by association, their entire life. I reached out to Tanner after he posted this video, where he is encouraging us to live what he calls a “positively unbalanced” life: to go all in on the things that we are pursuing without holding back. That is the only way to be truly great at anything. Taking a balanced approach tends to lead to perpetually spinning your wheels, and never really making much forward progress. We spoke about this concept at length. As any good coach will tell you, the basics of exercise and nutrition are BY FAR the most important. Naturally, Tanner and I agreed on this and spoke about the importance of getting really good at these things. And then applying them forever: that is how you reach your goals, fitness or otherwise. Tanner is not the type of guy who will sugarcoat things; he’s going to tell you like it is, and I admire that. One step beyond this though, is that Tanner really walks the walk. All the stuff he talks about, he actually does. He’s about as authentic as they come, and I believe we collectively need to celebrate this more. You should be following Tanner on IG where he’d be happy to connect with you. You should also visit Tanner’s website, truestrength.co to check out more of his coaching and programming. Tanner also contributes as a writer to T-Nation, and you can check out his articles here. I would greatly appreciate any comments, questions or feedback. If you could share this with a friend, that would mean the world to me. If you enjoy this podcast, I would be extremely grateful if you subscribed and left a short review on iTunes. #41: How to Start Sleeping Better TONIGHT

Sleep is hard, and it shouldn't be. It's also extremely important to everything we do as humans, so doing it well should be pretty high on your priority list. Naturally, there are many factors that play into having a good night's sleep regularly. I wanted to cover some of the simplest and easiest things that you can start doing TONIGHT to sleep better. No fancy gadgets, no new skills to learn, nothing to requires anything but a small change in behaviour. Like anything, none of this actually helps, unless you actually do it. I dive into my 3 best tips to sleep better tonight: getting off your screens, keeping the bedroom for sleeping only, and the use of meditation/mindfulness/breathwork. Towards the end I also covered a bunch of other rapid fire tips but didn't go into great detail. I'm confident that you will find at least one thing in this episode that will improve your sleep tonight. I would greatly appreciate any comments, questions or feedback. If you could share this with a friend, that would mean the world to me. If you enjoy this podcast, I would be extremely grateful if you subscribed and left a short review on iTunes.
