Learning how to deliberately grow inner strengths like courage, gratitude, and confidence is essential. Through experiences, one can enhance psychological resources. The focus is on fostering inner strengths directly through engaging experiences to promote positive neuroplasticity.
People can develop various psychological resources over time, challenging the belief that character is fixed. By actively engaging experiences and emphasizing positive traits, one can acquire and strengthen inner strengths. Most psychological resources are acquired over time, emphasizing the importance of engaging experiences directly to maximize neuroplastic change.
The "heel" framework, involving activation, enrichment, absorb, and link stages, facilitates lasting neural change. In a study teaching this framework, statistically significant improvements were found in positive emotions, self-compassion, gratitude, and cognitive resources. The method focuses on increasing the impact of experiences to create lasting positive changes.
The study explores how internal mental factors contribute to enhancing social and emotional learning in structured interventions and daily life. These factors, known as mental engagement factors, focus on deliberate actions that support the internalization phase of learning. By emphasizing the processes of enriching and absorbing experiences, individuals can extend and deepen their learning experiences, leading to lasting change.
The podcast discusses a study involving participants from the San Francisco Bay Area who underwent an 18-hour Positive Neuroplasticity Training course. The study measured participants before, immediately after, and two months post-intervention, revealing positive outcomes. Methodological considerations like ceiling effects, clustering, and the significance of change are highlighted, indicating the potential for further research in understanding individual differences and the impact of interventions.
One of the most important skills we can develop is learning how to learn–how to update old beliefs about ourselves, take in new information, and build psychological resources like courage, gratitude, and confidence. We have experiences from which we could potentially learn all the time, but how often are we able to actually implement lasting change from our positive experiences?
On this episode of Being Well, Dr. Rick and Forrest Hanson dive into Rick’s recently published study on our capacity for deliberate growth. We talk a bit about the neurological components of learning, how the study worked, and what the practical takeaways are to help us make learning stick.
