Episode 19: When the Lights Go Down in the Stadium
What motivates you to continue doing what it takes to maintain your healthy lifestyle after losing weight? And what does the title of today’s episode, “When the Lights Go Down in the Stadium” have to do with maintaining weight loss? Listen as I present an introduction to the topic of motivation and how some people relish the attention they receive as they lose weight. While not everyone enjoys being noticed, some people treasure the nearly daily comments they receive about how amazing they look as they are losing weight. They bask in the joy of hearing how inspiring they are to others. They soak up the feedback related to their improvements in self-confidence and overall demeanor. But when they get to a healthy weight, they sort of blend into the crowd and for them, it can be like when the lights go down in the stadium. There’s no more fanfare. The compliments fade. It’s quiet. Some people then feel invisible so they repeat the cycle of regaining and losing weight, not realizing how important that external motivation is for them. Episode 18: Don’t be a Yeah-Butt’er!
Many times, when people working to maintain their weight loss hear exactly what is required to do so (you know… eat breakfast, get enough sleep, exercise… those sorts of things), they start in with the “Yeah, but’s…”. “Yeah, but I’ve never been a breakfast eater.” “Yeah, but, I like to stay up really late at night and I still have to get up early for work.” “Yeah, but I really, really hate to exercise.” Are YOU a “Yeah-but’er?” Yeah-but’er’s are really just making a lot of excuses for not wanting to do what it takes to get what they SAY they want… to live at a healthy weight and to live a fuller life after weight loss surgery. “Yeah-but” all you want, but do realize that the more excuses you make for not doing what needs to be done in order to maintain the weight you lose after bariatric surgery, the more likely you are to regain that weight. Hey – It’s your health! Your responsibility. This day. Episode 17: Look at the Awesome Things You’ve Done! (A look at Effort)
You have done some pretty incredible things in your life that have required consistent effort. In fact, you do things every single day of your life that require a great deal of effort! So what’s up with the idea some people have that they “can’t” keep up the effort to maintain a healthy lifestyle or that it’s “too hard?” You put forth effort to complete high school or college and that took a lot of work… for a lot of days. You go to work… and that takes a tremendous amount of effort … every day. If you’re in a relationship, raising children, or taking care of aging parents, you are most definitely putting forth a lot of effort each day! Use this knowledge that you CAN and apply it to your ability to put forth the effort needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle after weight loss. Episode 16: I’m Not a Breakfast Eater and Other Malarkey
In this episode, you’ll hear a compassionate approach to acknowledging the malarky or “shenanigans” we let ourselves get away with. You’ll also experience a gentle verbal kick in the rear to remind you that every choice we make has corresponding consequences, good or not-so-good. A healthy parent who reminds their child that homework is a priority over video games, forgetting to take your gear to practice means there may be consequences from the coach for not being prepared, and that being part of family means doing some “not fun things like chores.” As a healthy adults who chose to have bariatric surgery, you may need a reminder that a healthy lifestyle means making exercise a priority over binge watching your favorite show, failing to make healthy food choices has consequences of unwanted weight gain, and being a healthy post-op means doing some “not fun things like exercise.” We all need the voice of fair and firm now and then! Episode 13: What’s Your Story? Are You Sticking To It?
We all have stories we tell about ourselves and our lives. Are the stories you tell helping you or harming you? If your goal is to maintain a healthy weight, consider what you tell others (and yourself) about creating time to meal prep or exercise… are you “just too busy” to make time for those things? Or is your story, “It won’t be easy, but I’ll make time to do what it takes to keep my blood pressure down and my A1C at a healthy level.” You have the power to write your own story and to create a happier, healthier future by that tales you tell! Episode 12: Self-Esteem and Weight — The Connection
Self-esteem is used to describe the overall personal worth or value a person believes he or she has. The way you talk about yourself and the ways you treat yourself (your health included) tell others a lot about your sense of self-esteem or how much you appreciate and like yourself. Our self-esteem involves the beliefs we have about ourselves, to include how we appraise our own appearance, beliefs, emotions, and behaviors. In today’s episode, we define self-esteem, explore how it develops, and talk about what we can do to improve those areas in our lives in which our self-esteem is hurting. Let’s work on being “good enough” and letting go of “perfection.” Let’s learn to behave in kind ways toward ourselves and say kind things to ourselves. Let’s acknowledge and celebrate our individual strengths and accept that others have their unique abilities that have no impact on our worth! And let’s improve our overall self-esteem by treating ourselves like the persons of amazing value that we are! Episode 11: Hanging on or Letting Go of an Unhealthy Relationship with Food
Have you known people who have been in an abusive relationship with another human being? Ever wonder the reasons they stay in relationships where their self-esteem is damaged (by another person and by themselves)? You probably can’t imagine remaining in a relationship in which your physical, social and emotional health are constantly being threatened and eroded. And yet, so many people remain in unhealthy relationships with food in which their self-esteem is battered, and their physical, social and emotional health are threatened and eroded. What are the reasons? Imagine, (if you are in an unhealthy relationship of any sort), that you are holding on tightly to one end of the rope in that unhealthy relationship. You have the option to let go at any time. YOU CAN LET GO! What keeps people from doing so? Listen and ponder…Please subscribe to the show and rate it on Apple Podcasts, download free information at www.conniestapletonphd.com, and follow me on Twitter (@cstapletonphd), Instagram (@cstapletonphd), YouTube, LinkedIn, and on Facebook.

Episode 10: Your Relationship With Food
We all have a personal and unique relationship with food. Research, as presented by the National Eating Disorder Association, suggests that up to 50 percent of Americans have a “disordered” relationship with exercise, their body and with food. While that does NOT mean that half of all Americans have what we typically think of as a clinical “eating disorder,” such as anorexia, bulimia or binge eating disorder, it does indicate that a lot of us have what I would call “a less than positive relationship” with food, with exercise and with our bodies. THAT should come as no surprise! What about you and YOUR relationship with food? In this episode, we’ll explore what having a relationship with food is about, how your personal relationship with food developed, and what that relationship might suggest for improving that relationship. Of course, as you’ve heard me say many times, as our relationship with food improves, so does our relationship with ourself and our relationships with others. When you make improvements in any of those relationship categories, the others will naturally improve! I have a suggestion at the end of this episode that will shed some very interesting light on your unique relationship with food! Listen and find out what that is!
