Are you guilty of filling all the white spaces in your weekly calendar?

It's a well known fact that anyone training for an endurance sport always wishes that there were more hours in the day. Early starts, lunch time sessions and late nights to fit in all your training around work and family commitments are the norm, but failing to have any "white space" in your calendar could be what's stalling your progress right now. Most of us find it very hard to do nothing, it's just how we're programmed. Yes you might have a 'rest day' scheduled into your week but you then decide it'd be nice to catch up with a friend and you go for a 2 hour walk. It's very easy for us to fill the white space with things we consider not to be training; walking, climbing, hiking etc but this IS classed as training load and if you're needing to rest or get over an injury this is going to be detrimental. How to build a body and mind that can cope with 38 hours of ascending and descending through the Swiss Alps: Laura's TVSB Story

A great client catch up today with Laura who just completed Trail Verbier St Bernard by UTMB. A 140km course with 9600m of vertical climbing through the Swiss Alps - it's definitely not one for the faint hearted! Laura takes us through her race which under 38 hours In a race where over half the field DNF'd and temperatures reached 40 degrees in places, Laura shares with us her preparation, the race highs and lows (literally and figuritively) and how she's managed to recover so quickly afterwards. We briefly mention Laura's back story, which is eventful to say the least. Strength training is the vehicle for behavioural change

The key to becoming a successful and sustainable athlete is your ability to have not only good training habits (and to maintain them), but to also have the ability to upgrade them when and where necessary. This will also be largely based upon the feedback and accountability you have on a week to week basis. Strength and conditioning provides the ultimate framework for behavioural change. This is due to it's structure and progressive nature where you have the opportunity to ' plug and play' these 'new' behaviours at will. From debilitating back pain to running 100miles - Martins Story

In todays client hotseat we hear from Martin who has been looking to run long for a number of years but who has been constantly held back with reoccuring episodes of serious back pain. Over the last 6 months he has completely committed to not only improving his mobility and the range of motion through his hips and lower back but also increasing his base levels of strength and power alongside his run volume. When working with these types of injuries progress is never linear and the key to success has been the accountability and feedback between athlete and coach. Is 'Hyper Specific Training' required for your next endurance event?

The inspiration for todays podcast conversation came when talking to a current client who is moving on from his recent 70.3 performance and is now looking at tackling an 11 mile swim event along the length of Lake Windermere. Now as a swimmer (before anything else), SFE client Nathan isn't phased by this next endurance endeavour, however we've also discussed how he can't go into this being complacent. The longterm solution for overcoming achilles injury & back pain - with SFE Client Miles

We're very grateful to be able to share Miles's story with you this week. A very talented runner who came to us after a plague of achilles issues and back pain. Fed up with the endless cycle of injury treatment, which although provided temporary relief, was expensive, painful and short term. Miles knew that he had to find a long term solution if he was to get back to performing at his best and enjoying his running again. Through his dedicated approach and open mindset, we worked on a strength and conditioning program that identified his deficiencies, retrained his loading patterns and improved his movement efficiency. Using S&C to build trust in your body and your performance

As athletes we will all at some point be faced with uncertainty or moments where we question "Am I good to go on?" or "Is my body capable of this?" and unfortunately for many this will be a gamble. But for those of who have directed specific, purposeful and progressive work into building the necessary S&C foundations, they will have the knowledge and confidence that they need to answer these questions with clarity. Our endurance training alone is unable to give us the 'fore-warning' that a strength program can. By having clear metrics and the ability to test our body before we put ourselves back into high volume, high intensity environments we can make calculated decisions that'll prevent unnecessary backward steps in our progress.
