What does the research say? with Dr. Richard Blagrove

Kriss had the pleasure this week of sitting down with Dr Richard Blagrove, Lecturer in Physiology and currently the Programme Leader for the MSc Strength and Conditioning at Loughborough University. We first met Richard back in 2016 when he was Programme Director for the BSc Strength and Conditioning Science at St Mary’s University, after recently publishing his book ‘Strength and Conditioning for Endurance Running’. Always an interesting and insightful discussion, Kriss and Richard deep dive into past and current research studIes and the applications these findings have on endurance athletes. From the consequences of chronic low energy availability on bone health markers, to setting strength standards for athletes and then onto the ‘optimal’ formula for concurrent training, this podcast has some really interesting takeaways. We’d like to thank Richard for his time and knowledge shared on this podcast. Some of Richards other accolades that we feel we need to mention include: - His work at Birmingham City University as a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science, where he was awarded a Senior Fellowship by the Higher Education Authority (2017). - Managed the sport science support to The Royal Ballet Company in London, and was Lead Strength and Conditioning Coach for Sport and Health Services. - Richard is an Accredited Strength and Conditioning Coach and previously a Director of the UK Strength and Conditioning Association. - He has provided strength and conditioning coaching support to numerous athletes over the last 12 years including several Olympic and Paralympic athletes. - Richards extensive work with middle- and long-distance runners provided the inspiration for his doctoral research which investigated the utility of strength-based exercise in adolescent distance runners. From devastating knee MRI to a 6 day trail race across Madeira: Olivers' story (Client Hotseat)

Think about this...6 days of trail running across the island of Madeira, covering roughly 130km, with 8000m elevation (and back down again!) Now think about doing this after you’ve been told 9 months again, it’s unlikely that you’ll ever be able to run again. That was where SFE client Oliver was at the beginning of 2022. Struggling with a significant meniscal injury, he could barely run 5km without pain. This is why the true feat of his achievement is quite incredible and shows just what is possible with commitment, effort and the right guidance and accountability from an MDT approach. Training for four ultra races whilst working full time: Aoifes' Story (Client Hotseat)

As a GP with regular night shifts and incredibly busy schedule, Aoife’s strength training approach was very ad-hoc and unstructured. A relatively young runner, only really starting seriously in the last 4 years it was clear that structure and consistency was something that she needed if she was going to get the most out of her ultra-running goals. Since earlier this year we’ve worked with Aoife to create a strong and resilient chassis, and with success. She’s completed four big races this summer the Highland Fling (80km), a 105km in Spain, renowned 145km TDS and a little 50 miler to wrap up her season! How strength training improved my mindset for successful run training: Georges story (Client Hotseat)

George came to us at SFE with a hip and knee injury that was stopping him from running pain free. With a big year of ultra-running planned culminating in a 100miler in the summer he wanted to see if we could help. Having never done strength training before bar a few sporadic 'off the cuff' strength exercises he has progressed with patience and consistency to become a rather accomplished strength athlete, in doing so enabling him to re-balance his body, overcome his injuries and walk away from his 100 mile race successfully, without complaint. From a year in a wheelchair to conquering UTMB: Laura's Story (Client Hotseat)

What an inspiring episode we have for you today. We checked in with SFE client Laura off the back of her fantastic 106mile race at Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB). However, it’s Laura’s back story that makes her result even more special, from a year in a wheelchair following a road traffic accident, two previous medical DNF’s at UTMB and two bouts of covid earlier this year, it was Laura’s positivity, determination and consistent hard work that got her to that finish line. Understanding hip dominant and knee dominant strength exercises and when they should be used

In this weeks podcast we look a little closer at hip and knee dominant strength exercises. What the differences are between the two, the benefits of performing both and the key coaching cues and pieces of equipment you can use to perform them effectively. Understanding these better will give you the power to manipulate your strength program and tailor it to your individual needs. Remember, understanding why something has been included in your training program will greatly increase your motivation to keep doing it and ultimately appreciate how it transfer across into your sport and day to day training.
