030. "I was stuck in the diet mentality": Kathy

Kathy had followed every diet out there. Sure, she was able to follow the rules for a while, but then she "fell off the wagon". She was used to tracking and following a meal plan, but what she wasn't used to was thinking for herself.  But when she joined the Life After Sugar Program, she started looking at things completely differently. Yes, there's a food list and recipes, but at first, she wasn't ready to look at them. When Kathy first signed up, she was uncomfortable with this new way of thinking because this gentle approach is opposite to the diet mentality. For example, there's no hard and fast rules, and no "leader" (although Kathy did feel guided and encouraged). She also learned to respect her own personality, to read and think and question information she was presented with. And the support of the others in the group was what held her accountable and helped her implement what she learned in the After Sugar Club.In this episode, Kathy talks about her own background with diets, as well as how free she feels now.  To learn more about the Life After Sugar Program, go here: https://aftersugarclub.com/program1/ Do the Cravings Quiz and take the first step to get rid of your cravings! 028. "I don't have a fatty liver any more!" - Mario

In this episode, Mario tells me about how he grew up in Québec, Canada. At home, his parents naturally ate what would now be considered a keto way of eating: low in carbs and starches, no snacks, plenty of meat. When he got together with his then-girlfriend, he started eating a "normal" diet like she'd grown up with. Despite his active lifestyle and "healthy" diet, he kept gaining weight. When he started getting back pain, he went to see the doctor. X-rays showed nothing, even though his pain kept getting worse. It turned out to be his liver: all the fructose he was eating had given him a fatty liver. So he started educating himself, about sugar, about science, and about low carb/keto fasting. And it transformed his health and his life! He's now a coach for Clinique Reversa in Québec, Canada, here: https://cliniquereversa.com/Do the Cravings Quiz and take the first step to get rid of your cravings! 027. "I tried to be healthy in ways that were unhealthy": Meghan

Meghan had always been interested in health, but she didn't know that all those "healthy" products like shakes and bars actually contain a lot of hidden sugars. She ran marathons, but she also suffered from allergies, bloating, breathing troubles, and many other health issues. Then she started to experiment: organic sugar, fat-free, diets, food combining. But everybody's body is bio-individual, and even though she was being health-conscious, she felt terrible. She eliminated certain foods from her diet, like dairy. But especially, she took out sugar and starches. She got grumpy and emotional during her withdrawal, but she continued because she saw what was shifting for her body, her mind, and her emotions... for the better. She also learned about sprouting, fermenting, as well as probiotics and prebiotic foods. And the importance of the microbiome (gut health). Her goal was to feel better, not to lose weight. And now she feels fantastic! Her advice as a health coach is simple: look after your gut health, eat real whole foods and drink plenty of water.Find Meghan here: https://wellnessonpurpose.org/.Download your simple guide to getting more energy with less sugar here: https://aftersugarclub.com/energy-guide/.Do the Cravings Quiz and take the first step to get rid of your cravings! 023. Father's Day: 3 dads (including mine!) talk about sugar

A special Father's Day edition in the company of UK Low Carb's Dan Greef, Jeff Gerken (from Episode 16)... and my dad, Alan Gorman!Dan talks about the impact that eating low carb has had on him as a father, and on his whole family. He wants his young children to be free free to make choices and to be informed to know what works for them. Both his children have nut allergies, so in a way, that makes cutting sugary foods easier. Dan's wife changed her diet when she had gestational diabetes when she was pregnant with their first child. He decided to start eating low carb too. Now they are much more aware about the importance of being role models and giving real, whole foods to their two children, for their healthy bodies, brains, and development.Jeff talks about his own father and father-in-law, and how he perceived them as old fat men! He never made the connection how his formerly slim cross-country running father became overweight in middle age. Jeff himself was active and sporty, and kept his weight down that way. But then when an injury stopped him from playing sports, he couldn't even keep up with his much older father-in-law. Diets left him feeling hungry and with no energy. He thought weight gain and health issues were inevitable as you get older. As a father, he limits his own son's consumption of soda because it used to be his downfall, and his family is what inspired him to change his diet and his goals. And my third guest is my lovely dad, Alan Gorman. Because he's been in contact with me going on about... er, educating people about sugar, he's made some adjustments in his own diet. For example, he cut down on orange juice. He also learned more about how carbohydrates and sugar affect the body. In this recording during his visit to Montreal in 2018, we talk about how modern processed foods may have "hijacked" our intuition. We also talk about how food companies engineer food products to make them hyper-palatable. Unlike real, whole foods that his parents and grandparents used to eat, these types of processed products are developed in a lab to have a "bliss point" that makes people want more... and buy more!To find all of the podcast episodes, go to https://aftersugarclub.com/podcast/ and download my 5 tips to help you with cravings. Have you ever questioned your definition of "treat"? I never had. For the first 45 years of my life, there was a universal truth that treat = sweet. But then when I stopped eating sugar and sweeteners, I realized that my definition of "treat" was changing. In this episode, I share my own personal process of questioning what was behind my need for sweet treats. I also talk about sweeteners and whether they're any "better" than sugar. We touch on gut health too.Imagine if you didn't need sweetness as a treat any more... How would you feel? What would you eat or do?
