Pacemaker Functions and Types
- Pacemakers prevent slow heart rates, coordinate heart chambers, and synchronize ventricular contractions.
- Three types of pacemakers exist: single-chamber, dual-chamber, and biventricular (CRT).
Pacemaker Indications
- Consider pacemakers for sinus node dysfunction (bradycardia, tachy-brady) or AV conduction disease.
- Symptomatic or high-grade AV block necessitate pacing.
CRT Pacemakers
- CRT pacemakers (three leads) are used for heart failure with low ejection fraction (less than 35%).
- This is specifically indicated when a left bundle branch block causes ventricular desynchrony.
