How to Turn Off a Pacemaker When a Patient's Dying
A pacemaker cannot make a patient immortal, it will not be able to continue to keep the heart beating. If other factors are not also going on, if the heart is starved for oxygen, then the heart muscle starts to die and you cannot keep that heart muscle alive simply by pacing it. "I was very uncomfortable early on in my career with the concept of turning off a pacemaker in somebody who requests it," he says.
