Understanding Trauma and Its Symptoms
Trauma refers to experiences that overwhelm our coping capacity, leading to the development of trauma symptoms. These symptoms reflect a survival mode of our nervous system due to adverse circumstances. Understanding trauma and its symptoms is crucial in addressing intergenerational trauma.
Intergenerational Trauma: Biology and Psychology
Intergenerational trauma is unique because it can be passed down through biology and psychology. Epigenetic transmission, or the expression of stress and trauma genes, occurs when parents experience chronic trauma or stress. This genetic and biological predisposition combines with psychological factors, such as stress during pregnancy and adverse childhood experiences, to create a cycle of trauma that affects future generations.
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are childhood traumas or events that result in chronic stress or trauma. ACEs can range from divorce and death to medical or mental health issues in the family. Research shows that ACEs can have long-lasting effects on physical and mental health, as well as increase the risk of certain diseases.
Hope for Breaking the Cycle and Healing
Despite the challenges of intergenerational trauma, healing and breaking the cycle is possible. By addressing trauma and implementing trauma-informed care, individuals can find resilience and healing. Tools such as breathwork, rocking, and humming can help regulate the nervous system and pave the way for intergenerational healing and the creation of a new foundation for future generations.
This week we're joined by Dr. Mariel Buque to define and discuss intergenerational trauma, adverse childhood experiences, and systems that we can put in place to support ourselves and our family. We'll learn how to become a cycle breaker, as well as a practical technique that you can use in tough moments. Her new book, Break the Cycle: A Guide to Healing Intergenerational Trauma, comes out in January.
