Brandon Smitley on Developing the Young Athlete

When Brandon Smitley returned to Terre Haute in 2012 to work on his graduate degree at Indiana State University, he realized the lack of a facility where athletes and community members could go to achieve their desired results. Brandon, a competitive powerlifter and world-renowned strength coach, began a project to help improve the community’s health, fitness, and athletic performance. The project soon evolved to the Terre Haute Intensity Resistance and Sports Training (THIRST), which he co-founded and co-owns with his wife, Adrian, a strength coach and personal trainer. Brandon joins me today to discuss conjugate training methods and their application to youth athletic training. He defines conjugate training and differentiates it from concurrent training. He outlines the key issues he encounters whenever he trains young athletes. And Brandon also highlights the importance of cultivating confidence in the weight room, and explains why coaches need to prioritize buy-in when training kids and young athletes.   Ensure that the program is something they enjoy and that it builds their confidence. If we can get kids to buy in first, everything else will follow. – Brandon Smitley   This week on the Physical Preparation Podcast: Dominating life and what led Brandon to the world of physical preparation Brandon’s career path and why he decided to work with clients in the private sector Defining and demystifying conjugate training The history and popularization of conjugate training Applying the conjugate training method to youth athletes in the private sector The difference between conjugate and concurrent training Brandon’s philosophy on training youth athletes Keeping kids physically active amid COVID-19 and e-learning General body awareness and other key issues Brandon deals with when training young athletes The importance of networking in the world of physical preparation The ups and downs of gym ownership   Resources Mentioned: Book: Conjugate U: The Ultimate Cheat Code for Athletic Development & Injury Reduction by Nate Harvey   Connect with Brandon: THIRST THIRST on Instagram THIRST on Facebook Brandon Smitley on LinkedIn Brandon Smitley on Instagram Email: thirst.training@gmail.com   IFAST University is BACK! The BIG Q&A Show – January 2022

Over the last several weeks, I’ve received a ton of really great questions from people like you – my amazing listeners and social media followers. And while being able to connect and interact with people on social media is great – sometimes it’s difficult to provide longer, well thought-out responses. That’s why I love taking a moment to answer your most pressing questions in these BIG Q&A episodes. In today’s episode, I answer eight questions I recently received from my Instagram followers. We start by talking about the benefits of getting certifications like the CSCS, and explain why I believe certifications do not automatically make you a phenomenal coach. I explain how I got started with video production and how to take your video content to the next level. I highlight the benefits of working as an independent contractor and explain the importance of finding a working environment that allows you to try new things and learn from your mistakes. I dive deep into how I determine which cues to use with our IFAST clients to achieve the best results for their unique needs. I also explain why it’s crucial to regularly analyze your clients progress, how to determine when it’s time to refer a client to another trainer, and what to look for when searching for a mentor or business consultant. And last but not least, I talk about when it’s okay to use the Belt Buckle Up cue with your clients, and why you should refrain from using it with someone that presents a swayback posture.   No certification automatically makes you a great coach. – Mike Robertson   This week on the Physical Preparation Podcast: Why coaching certifications do not necessarily make you a great coach, along with the benefits of getting a certification in general Getting started with video production Applying the skills, lessons, and strategies you learn from the Complete Coach Certification course The value of working in a “Safe to Fail” environment Our client onboarding system at IFAST Why I don’t recommend using the Belt Buckle Up cue with someone that presents a swayback posture Determining the best cues to apply for your client’s fitness goals Helping clients avoid shrugging during reaching or rowing exercises session Analyzing your client’s progress and determining when it’s time to refer them to another trainer The criteria to look for when searching for a mentor or business coach   Resources Mentioned: iMovie GarageBand Pat Rigsby Mark Fisher Luka Hocevar Pete Depuis and Eric Cressey Business Mentorship    Stop the Frustration! Stefan Valdes on Developing an Elite NBA Off-Season Program

Like many new coaches, Movement Lab Co-founder, Stefan Valdes, once copied more experienced coaches when training others—that is, until he entered physical therapy school. Stefan earned his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of Miami, where he built and developed the critical thinking skills crucial to coaching clients and athletes. By integrating his DPT education with his experience working as a performance coach in the NBA for the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Detroit Pistons, Stefan created principles and methods that would later be used to develop Movement Lab’s assessment and training system. Stefan joins me today to share his principles on developing an off-season training program for elite NBA players. He describes how coaches can get buy-in from athletes by making them part of the program design. Stefan reveals the biggest weaknesses he sees from the athletes he works with and underscores the value of prioritizing protective training for professional athletes. He also highlights a coach’s role in building a bridge between athletic staff and players and discusses how coaching in the private sector is different from working with athletic teams.   Meet the athletes where they’re at and let them be part of the program design. Each person is different—come up with a program that’s tailored to them and their needs.- Stefan Valdes   This week on the Physical Preparation Podcast: Stefan’s career arc and what led him to the world of physical preparation How going to physical therapy school sharpened Stefan’s critical thinking skills Stefan’s philosophy on training and athletic development Getting buy-in from athletes and making them part of program design Off-season programming and blending speed, strength, and tissue adaptations for success The difference between protective and performance training Rebuilding and maintaining tendon health Building a bridge between the players and athletic staff Career highlights and how Movement Lab has evolved through the pandemic   Connect with Stefan: Movement Lab Movement Lab on Instagram Movement Lab on Facebook Stefan Valdes on LinkedIn Email: info@movementlabtraining.com   Stop the Frustration! 5 Superpowers that Can Make You an Elite Trainer or Coach

I don’t know about you, but I’m a huge fan of comic books and superheroes. But here’s the thing about most superheroes: they’re either born with a superpower—like Superman—or, they’re given one—like Spiderman getting bit by a spider. On the other hand, trainers and coaches—though heroes in their own right—aren’t born with or given these superpowers. While they can’t use heat vision or sling webs (yet), there are five skills coaches can develop into superpowers to turn them into the elite trainers and coaches they’re meant to be. In this episode, I share five superpowers that can make you an elite trainer or coach. I discuss how empathy has effectively served me through my career as a coach and explain how being a better communicator helps your clients get better results. I outline how to motivate a client or athlete by understanding and relating to their goals. And I also explain how you can improve your soft skills by becoming a better listener and underscore the power of building connections with your clients and athletes.   Once your clients and athletes feel a connection with you and that you truly care, nothing can stop you as a trainer or coach. – Mike Robertson   This week on the Physical Preparation Podcast: The value of improving your communication skills and how I cheated my way through eighth grade English How a bad fitness article made me fall in love with writing The importance of learning to develop empathy The different ways you can motivate your clients and athletes How a gym’s culture can help lift and inspire people Motivating a client or athlete by understanding and relating to their goals Taking the time to build a connection with your clients and athletes   Last Chance to Make 2022 Your Best Year Ever With the new year right around the corner, I want to help YOU make 2022 your best year ever. I’ve made it a goal to totally revamp my online coaching platform. In fact, I want to help more people than ever before –  and that starts with people like you. So if you’re interested in getting in the best shape of your life this year, I’ve got two options for you.   Option Number 1: Private Online Coaching We’ll take offline training programs and move it online. Josh Lindblom on Mental Toughness and Long-Term Success in Professional Baseball

Throughout his 15 seasons in professional baseball, Josh Lindblom has learned that you have to find a way to differentiate yourself in the game. After being drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the second round of the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft, Josh made his debut in 2011 and played for several organizations, including the Philadelphia Phillies, Oakland Athletics, and Texas Rangers. He then had a five-year stint in South Korea, playing for the Doosan Bears and Lotte Giants, before signing with the Milwaukee Brewers organization in 2019. But these experiences alone don’t separate Josh from other players—it’s his insight that sports aren’t about winning, but the process of self-discovery and formation. Josh joins me today to share what success means to him and what it takes to pitch at the highest level of baseball. He describes the mental aspect of professional baseball and shares how he has learned to control his emotions throughout his career. And he also highlights the importance of knowing yourself as an athlete and person and underscores how he deals with the ups and downs of life.   Sports, like life, are just one big ebb and flow of failure and success. But the only time we ever truly fail is when we don’t learn from that experience. – Josh Lindblom   This week on the Physical Preparation Podcast: Josh’s life, background, and career in professional baseball How Josh was introduced to the world of physical preparation The evolution of Josh’s physical training over the years The diminishing returns in strength outputs and the value of having training routines How physical recovery changes after 30 years Mentally preparing for high-level pitching in professional baseball How Josh learned the value of mental and emotional control Three things Josh tells himself in a game and the importance of knowing yourself in sports, business, and life What it means to compete Combining film and analytics to compete in high-level sports Learning to pivot and how Josh adjusts his pitch in a game How Josh self-soothes and controls his emotions during the big moments in baseball Dealing with the ups and downs of life and staying level-headed Learning the difference between failing a task and being a failure Sports as a means to learn about yourself and life Josh’s career highlights, the toughest hitters to go up against, and why it’s important to not take the game too seriously What it’s like to be an athlete with kids who play sports   Connect with Josh: Josh Lindblom on Instagram Josh Lindblom on Twitter   Make 2022 Your Best Year Ever With the new year right around the corner, I want to help YOU make 2022 your best year ever. He explains what makes coach development different from coach education and outlines how to improve your decision-making hygiene. He describes how individuals can curate their career and personal development. And David also underscores the importance of applying knowledge and highlights the factors that make a master coach.   Facts and figures don’t move people the way we think they would—it’s emotions that do. 7 Simple Tips to Write Better Training Programs

One of the many things I’ve learned over the years about writing programs is that there’s a bell curve involved. When we’re just starting out, we don’t know much about training, let alone actually designing a program. But as we move closer to the apex of that bell curve and accumulate more experience as well as information on exercises, set/rep schemes, and tempos, the complexity of our knowledge base becomes our hindrance. From “how do I design a program,” our question becomes “how can I make my programs more efficient and impactful for my clients?” In this episode, I share seven simple tips to help you write and design better training programs that meet the needs of your clients and athletes. I reveal three questions you need to ask yourself before sitting down to write your training programs. I share superset strategies and explain why layering is one of my favorite tools in superset design. And last but not least, I also explain what it means to “slow cook” your athletes and discuss how you can get yourself unstuck from the program design block.   The art of program design takes time. – Mike Robertson   This week on the Physical Preparation Podcast: The benefits of outlining or sketching your programs on a notepad with a pencil The evolution of the program defense that IFAST interns go through Playing the long game when it comes to training your athletes and clients Finding the balance between the finer details of a program and actually training How to create better superset strategies using layers The different ways to layer movements in your program design to get better training results Simplifying your programs for the laypeople and choosing adaptation over overwhelm The “One Thing” principle and what it means to keep the goal, the goal   Resources Mentioned: TrainHeroic   Related Content: 5 Things I Need to Say Podcast   Make 2022 Your Best Year Ever With the new year right around the corner, I want to help YOU make 2022 your best year ever.
