Daniel Martinez on Assessing, Evaluating and Training the Vertical Jump

Sep 9, 2022

Between his time as a volleyball coach and working with Force Decks, Daniel Martinez knows the ins-and-outs of vertical jump training like few others in our industry.

Daniel is currently in his fifth year as Trinity’s Head Strength & Conditioning Coach and as Coordinator of the Patrick Stumberg Sports Performance Center.

He is also the coordinator of a conference on sports science and strength & conditioning, which brings top professionals in the field on campus to share best practices.

Prior to his time at Trinity, Daniel was the U.S. consultant for ForceDecks, which works collaboratively with strength & conditioning and sport science departments internationally with teams from the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and the United States Olympic Committee.

So in today’s episode, we’re going to take a deep dive into assessing, evaluating and training the vertical jump.

(Luka and Harden) didn’t bend that low, but what they did bend, they did it really fast….and based on their structure and body type, they’re really strong in that position – Daniel Martinez

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

  • Why you should constantly ask yourself the question, “Why am I here?”
  • A breakdown of the individual phases of the vertical jump.
  • High- and low-tech assessment strategies based on your environment and budget.
  • The difference between “fast jumpers” and “fast finishers.”
  • Training interventions to help ANY ATHLETE improve their vertical jump.
  • How to help young coaches discern what strategies are best – and when to use them!
  • Shifting away from a purely strength/force-focused training program.
