Alwyn Cosgrove on Fat Loss Training, Mentorship and Paying it Forward
When you reflect on life, it’s interesting to see how some people step in at exactly the right point in time.
As a young coach growing up, I didn’t have a lot of great mentors.
I knew I wanted to create content, I wanted to use speaking as an avenue to educate other trainers and coaches, and someday I wanted to own my own gym.
And these were awesome goals – but how should I actually go about DOING THIS?
Luckily for me Alwyn Cosgrove came into MY LIFE at just the right time, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Alwyn is the co-owner of Results Fitness in Santa Clarita, California—twice named one of the top 10 gyms in America by Men’s Health and Women’s Health magazines.
Alwyn and his wife Rachel are also owners of a fitness professional consulting company, Results Fitness University.
In this episode, Alwyn and I are going to touch on a ton of different topics – from professional mentorship, to owning your own business, to how fat loss training has evolved over the years.
If you pay attention, that’s not even what they say in the (Field of Dreams) movie. They say, “build it and HE will come” – as in his dad, who isn’t going to pay! – Alwyn Cosgrove
This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:
Alwyn’s career in martial arts and how it propelled him into the fitness industry.
How the “Butterfly Effect” has lead to so many big moments in his life.
His first mentor, and why that made such a big impact for him in every aspect of his life.
Why Alwyn opened a gym, and how he then realized being an independent contractor wasn’t so bad
How fighting – and BEATING – cancer twice has shaped both his life and his business.
The impact COVID had on owning and operating a gym, and what he’s changed as a result.
Why the fat loss hierarchy was such an important article for our industry (even if it was published in 2007!)
How he’s evolved his fat loss training and programs over the years to get even better results.

Build Savage, Athletic Beasts with Exerfly!
This week’s episode of the Physical Preparation Podcast is brought to you by Exerfly.
Flywheel training is a method of strength training where your athletes generate resistance by using the inertia of a flywheel instead of traditional gravity-based resistance training
By accelerating and then decelerating a disk, your athletes generate resistance in both the concentric and eccentric portions of the lift, WITHOUT the need for ridiculously heavy weights.
Standard free weight training is great for the early preparatory phases, but as athletes develop there’s more to it than just getting stronger at all costs.
At some point, you need to prepare them for the massive eccentric forces they’ll experience on the field, court or pitch – and with Exerfly’s motorized technology, you can increase the eccentric overload of the lift anywhere from 1-80%!
Exerfly is used by numerous teams in the NFL, NBA, over 50% of the English Premiere League, and numerous Olympic development programs.
Now as a small business owner you may immediately assume that an Exerfly is out of your budget, because we all know that every penny counts.
But Exerfly has you covered here as well – they offer 36-month, interest free-financing, so you can get started ASAP with your training and pay as you go.
And when you factor in a 30-day money back guarantee, 2- year warranty AND free shipping, the Exerfly really is a solid investment.
To learn more, head over to Exerfly.com so you can start building some savage athletic beasts in your gym.

Mike and Luka on Wins, Losses and Playing the Long-Game in the Fitness Industry
I’ve got a pretty special podcast for you this week my friend.
As you may or may not know, I spent last weekend in Seattle giving one of my Complete Coach Seminars.
These are always great weekends, which are only made better by the amazing people I have around me.
Now if you know anything about my brother Luka Hocevar, you know the man can put in work.
So after 2.5 days of speaking, why should I be surprised that Luka brought a videographer in Sunday afternoon to shoot a podcast and 4-5 Vlogs???
However, this podcast is special because while he and I love to talk X’s and O’s, this one dives into the heart and essence of coaching.
We talk about our wins and losses.
We talk about why we’re so passionate about coaching.
And we talk about how YOU – at any stage in your career – can set yourself up for long-term success.
I hope you enjoy it!
You don’t NEED all this money – you just need the time and energy to be willing to learn, and I think that’s exciting. – Luka Hocevar

Dr. Ebonie Rio on Strength, Springs and Rebuilding the Athletic Knee
Here’s a crazy stat: Recent research by Bunt et al suggests that roughly one in four adults will suffer from chronic knee pain, and it’s prevalence has increased almost 65% over the past 20 years.
And similar to that, McNerney and Arendt state that roughly 30% of young athletes suffer from anterior knee pain, with female athletes being anywhere from 2 to 10x more likely to struggle with knee issues than their male counterparts.
So regardless of whether you’re training gen pop clients or athletes of any shape and size, the fact of the matter is knee issues are on the rise – and we need to arm ourselves with more information about the knee to help our people move and feel better.
And that’s why I’m so excited to bring Dr. Ebonie Rio on the podcast today.
Dr. Rio is a post doc researcher at La Trobe University and has completed her PhD in tendon pain. Her professional career has included time at the Australian Institute of Sport, Australian Ballet Company, Australian Ballet School, Melbourne Heart Football Club, Alphington Sports Medicine Centre, and the Victorian Institute of Sport.
But what’s even cooler is that she’s played a vital role in prepping athletes for the 2006 Commonwealth Games, 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, 2010 Singapore Youth Olympics, 2012 London Paralympics, and spent 18 months traveling with Disney’s The Lion King stage show.
So needless to say, Ebonie is an absolute BOSS and I’m really pumped to talk to her today.
Heavy load in terms of weight is not hard for a tendon – tendons are about rate of loading. If the load is static or slow, the tendon is happy – the muscle might be going “Oh my gosh, what are you doing” – but the tendon is happy. – Dr. Ebonie Rio
This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:
How Dr. Rio got started in the world of physical preparation, and her wide-ranging career path.
The differences between patellar tendinopathy (PT) and patello-femoral pain (PFP).
Her thoughts on the role that the hip play in clients/athletes who are suffering from PFP.
Program design for clients/athletes suffering from PFP, and what modifications you can make to keep them training.
The functional issues you see in PT, and why it’s so prevalent in sports that require repeated vertical jumping.
How to design a loading program for someone who is suffering from PT, and why slow, heavy loading is such a critical piece of the puzzle.
Why the soleus muscle is a major player in keeping the knee healthy, and why you should be training it regularly.
The role of isolation and machine-based work in rehabilitation and training programs.
Identifying asymmetries, and why Dr. Rio such a big believer in pushing the development of BOTH legs during the rehab process.
Her thoughts on return to play, and how to make the RTP process as smooth and effective as possible.

Dr. Courtney Conley on Assessing, Treating and Training the Foot
As children, most of us are born into the world with two happy and healthy feet.
They move, bend, and push just like they were designed to.
But over the years, whether it’s through bad shoes, lack of motion, or flat out weakness, we tend to lose those ideal foot mechanics – and the downside can mean a negative cascade of events throughout the body.
As someone that not only had foot issues herself, Dr. Courtney Conley was always interested in feet and how to get herself out of pain.
This led her down a path of not only chiropractic school but also working in an orthotic lab early in her career.
So how do you imagine she felt when she came to the stark realization that the product she was creating was actually BLOCKING normal foot function???
That realization, combined with an insatiable thirst for knowledge on everything feet, brought her to where she is today.
Dr. Courtney Conley is the founder and creator of Gait Happens where she has the opportunity to truly realize her dream of helping as many people as possible reclaim their foot function.
She’s an internationally renowned foot and gait specialist who teaches both nationally and internationally. Dr. Conley is a chiropractic physician who specializes in foot and gait mechanics. She holds a BA in Kinesiology, a BA in Human Biology and a doctorate in Chiropractic Medicine.
But most importantly, Dr. Courtney knows FEET – and that’s what we’re going to talk about here today!
My heart is so in this because when people can’t walk because their foot hurts, it’s brutal. It’s painful, and it hurts me. Because I know what it does for my mental health and my mental capacity, and still does every day. So I don’t think we need to make it any harder than it is, we just need to get out and walk more. – Dr. Courtney Conley
This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:
What originally got Dr. Courtney into the world of physical preparation, and most importantly, why she’s so interest in FEET.
The role the foot places on performance as a whole.
Foundational gait mechanics, and what your foot SHOULD be doing throughout the gait cycle.
The differences you see when moving from walking to running mechanics.
“High Gear”: What it is, why it’s important, and ways your clients and athletes will try to cheat it.
Why people shouldn’t be called “Pronators” or “Supinators.”
Toe gripping, foot strength, and why your foot is so important in everyday movement.
Dr. Conley’s assessment process, as well as self-assessments you can do with yourself or your clients/athletes.
The role tibial internal rotation (IR) plays in effective gate.
Courtney’s thoughts on barefoot training and the minimalist shoe phase.
Last but not least, Dr. Courtney’s shoe recommendations, and the two things she looks for in every pair of shoes she buys or recommends.
And last but not least, I’m trying the video thing here as well – especially since Courtney had some visuals in there as well. Let me know what you think!

When you’re just starting out as a trainer or coach, as the saying goes:
You don’t know what you don’t know.
And I think this is especially true with regards to writing programs.
Whether it’s using antiquated ways to program intensity, making everyone conform to 4-week training cycles, or skipping key steps early-on in the training process, today I want to share with you 10 things I wish I would’ve known when I first started writing programs.
I’ve got a blend of both big-picture, philosophical ideas and practical, ready to use tips thrown into the mix, so I really hope you’ll find this episode useful!
When you’re writing a program you have to start with the long-term goal(s) first, and then determine the KPI’s from there. – MR
This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:
What length of training block is best? And should everyone be rotating exercises every 4-weeks?
Why building training blocks of 1-RM’s isn’t the best way to program intensity, and alternatives you can use instead.
Thoughts on building a solid training base that will last you for months (or years) to come.
Why I’m working to be more well-rounded in every program I write.
The client psychology you MUST be aware of when writing programs.
Why Bill Hartman is such a big believer in “immediate wins,” and how it helps you improve buy-in.
KPI’s: What should you be tracking? What metrics are important? And how do you maintain or improve buy-in by tracking multiple things?
Should you focus on emphasizing strengths or eliminating weaknesses?
Making the variables of a training program congruent for optimal results.
How you can use tempo to improve the efficacy of a training program.
Using tempo to target muscles versus connective tissues in training.
Why fun is such a critical factor to your – and your clients’ – success.
