Daniel Martinez on Assessing, Evaluating and Training the Vertical Jump

Between his time as a volleyball coach and working with Force Decks, Daniel Martinez knows the ins-and-outs of vertical jump training like few others in our industry. Daniel is currently in his fifth year as Trinity’s Head Strength & Conditioning Coach and as Coordinator of the Patrick Stumberg Sports Performance Center. He is also the coordinator of a conference on sports science and strength & conditioning, which brings top professionals in the field on campus to share best practices. Prior to his time at Trinity, Daniel was the U.S. consultant for ForceDecks, which works collaboratively with strength & conditioning and sport science departments internationally with teams from the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and the United States Olympic Committee. So in today’s episode, we’re going to take a deep dive into assessing, evaluating and training the vertical jump.   (Luka and Harden) didn’t bend that low, but what they did bend, they did it really fast….and based on their structure and body type, they’re really strong in that position – Daniel Martinez   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: Why you should constantly ask yourself the question, “Why am I here?” A breakdown of the individual phases of the vertical jump. High- and low-tech assessment strategies based on your environment and budget. The difference between “fast jumpers” and “fast finishers.” Training interventions to help ANY ATHLETE improve their vertical jump. How to help young coaches discern what strategies are best – and when to use them! The 3 Biggest Issues Plaguing the S&C Industry

I’m ever the optimist, but there are definitely some things that need to be improved in our industry. Burnout is a real thing, and it’s negatively impacting both young and old coaches alike. Imposter syndrome can detract from your confidence and ability to coach at the highest level. And with millions of pieces of information at our fingertips, it’s no wonder we’re overwhelmed and overloaded with regards to continuing education. So we all know the issues that plague us – what’s more important is how do we address these them? That’s what I try to unpack in this week’s episode of the Physical Prep Podcast!   Find ways, or find things, that you’re passionate about. That you’re excited about. That you want to dive in and learn more about. – Mike Robertson   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: Why burnout is almost inevitable in our industry at some point in time. The differences between short- and long-term burnout. Difficult questions you need to ask yourself if you’re dealing with burnout What Imposter Syndrome is, and who it will impact. Why dealing with Imposter Syndrome may actually be a positive vs. a negative. How I had to learn back in the day, and why limited access to information was probably a good thing. The value of mentorship and why finding role models is a critical element to your success. How to use social media effectively as a fitness professional. Why wages and compensation are an issue in our field, and some thoughts on how to better address and deal with this issue.   Resources Mentioned Complete Coach Seminar Luka Hocevar on Collecting Role Models Bill Hartman Lee Taft Joel Jamieson   Stop the Frustration! Brian Kozak on Talking About, Assessing and Training Breathing

Brian Kozak feels has gone to great lengths to understand the benefits that proper breathing can have on your performance. He believes you are the most sophisticated technology on the planet – so where is your Owner’s manual? This is the ever-evolving idea he seeks. Under the mentorship of Juerg Feldmann, he spent over a decade ‘playing’ with leading-edge technology to find what ‘works’. The ultimate goal is to see in real-time the rate limiters & compensators in each system. Along the way, he spent 3 years in India studying Hatha Yoga, and has recently joined forces with Aaron Davis & Patrick Estes of Evolve Health & Performance in Austin, Texas. And in this episode, we’re going to take a deep dive into everything breathing – from assessments, to training, to communication and athlete buy-in.   How do we help them lower their HR faster? Easy…we teach them how to breathe more effectively. – Brian Kozak   This week on the Physical Prep Podcast: Brian’s long and winding journey in the world of physical preparation. Why he believes that “Breathing is the master controller of all systems.” The technology he’s using to assess breathing, and the product he’s creating to help evolve this even further. Why it’s imperative to use data to drive better decision-making – versus just collecting it and forgetting about it. How Brian uses breath re-training to enhance performance and conditioning. His thoughts on improving buy-in with clients and athletes to may not see the role or value in respiratory training. How mental performance is challenged by poor respiration, and why it needs to be addressed as well.   Connect with Brian: Brian Kozak on Instagram Evolve HP Website   Build Savage, Athletic Beasts with Exerfly! Lee Taft on the Harsh Reality of Youth Travel Sports

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last 20-30 years, you’ve probably heard of Lee Taft at some point in time. And with good reason! Lee is arguably the best multi-directional speed coach in the world, and I know I, personally, wouldn’t be the coach I am today without him. And while we’ve talked about speed numerous times in the past, today we’re going to attempt to tackle the topic that is youth travel sports. Now as a parent and youth sports coach myself, this is a topic that’s near and dear to my heart. I’ve seen kids that have moved into travel sports and thrived, while others got so burned out in a year or two they went back to rec or quit the sport all together. So in today’s episode, we’re going to do our best to breakdown and discuss this massive issue.   Keep in mind the ultimate goal is to make sure the program they choose, whether it’s rec league, 3-on-3, or a travel team, make sure they have a coach that understands development – Lee Taft   This week on the Physical Prep Podcast: Why Lee is so passionate about discussing the travel sports epidemic. A story on how AAU originally got started – and the athletes it was meant to serve. Is every athlete with a heartbeat and a wallet qualified to play travel sports? Two things every kid in sports – from rec to travel – should be focusing on Advice to parents who are interested in travel sports, but want to make the best choice. Thoughts on how parents can make travel sports a better experience for their children. Lee’s ideas for potentially blowing up the current system/model, and what he would do instead to truly help develop kids at every level.   Lee’s Previous Podcasts: Lee Taft on Assessing and Coaching Speed Effectively Lee Taft Talks Training Adults, Combines and Strength Training for Speed Lee Taft on the Biggest Coaching Mistakes in Speed Training Lee Taft on Program Design for Elite Speed and Agility Physical Preparation with Lee Taft   Connect with Lee: Social Media Facebook Twitter Instagram LeeTaft.com   Build Savage, Athletic Beasts with Exerfly! Nate Green on Passion, Reps and Keystyling Your Way to Better Communication

While Nate Green started out like many of us as a coach and gym owner, he quickly realized that that wasn’t where his true passion resided, so he dove head first into the world of fitness writing. Nate is currently the Director of Content Strategy at Waking Up, an advanced meditation app with over 50,000 5-star reviews. Prior to that, he spent over a decade working behind the scenes at Precision Nutrition and other influential health and fitness companies. He’s written for T-Nation, Men’s Health magazine, and has been featured in the LA Times and Tim Ferriss’s blog. And while we WILL talk about writing, perhaps more importantly in this show we’re going to talk about COMMUNICATION. Regardless of what your job title is, or what segment of the fitness industry you reside in, we can all work to improve our communication skills. We talk about what led Nate to the world of writing, and when he realized that training and coaching just wasn’t going to be his full-time gig. And last but not least, we talk about the evolution of his own training, and when he moved from being your classic everyday meathead, to something a little bit more well-rounded.   I had an editor, I was on a deadline, and I was passionate about what I was writing about so I put in a lot of reps at T-Nation. – Nate Green   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: How Nate got started in the world of physical preparation. His early days as a personal trainer/gym owner, and what ultimately led him to the world of fitness writing. How giving up weekends in his early 20’s for a paltry $12/hour actually kick-started his new career. Nate’s thoughts on developing the skill of writing – or really any new skill, for that matter. Advice on how to communicate more clearly – whether that’s speaking, writing, or just sending an email. Nate’s #1 tip for effective communication. How he trained early-on in his career, and how he’s evolved over the years. Steve Magness on Toughness, Coaching and Doing Hard Things

Steve Magness is a world-renowned expert on health and human performance. He is the co-author of the best-selling books Peak Performance and The Passion Paradox, and the author of The Science of Running. And his new book, “Do Hard Things,” is arguably his best work – in my humble opinion! Steve’s work has has appeared in Sports Illustrated, Wired, Outside, NY Magazine, and Forbes. Oh and by the way – he’s one heckuva coach to boot! Steve and I cover a ton of topics in this episode, starting with what “toughness” is – and why it may not your authoritarian coach like Bobby Knight. We’ll talk about how YOU can find your own personal and unique coaching style, versus simply following the crowd. In one of my favorite parts of the show, we talk about the old-school thought process of using conditioning to punish athletes, and what you should be doing instead. And last but not least, we talk about how we can teach our clients and athletes the value of trusting the training process, while not being married to the outcomes – which we can’t always control. This was a fantastic episode with Steve, and I really hope you enjoy it!    When you have those high-cortisol moments that linger after a game, you actually play worse the next game even if it’s days or a week later. – Steve Magness   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: Here’s a brief overview of what we covered on this week’s show: Steve’s background and how he got into physical preparation and coaching. What is “toughness?” And how has our perception of what being touch is evolved in the last 15-20 years? How coaches can positively or negatively impact their athletes viewpoints on failure. What you can do to figure out YOUR unique coaching style or DNA. The use of conditioning as a punishment tool, and what you should be doing instead. Q&A July 2022: Staff Development, Split-Squats, and My Current Goals

For the first time in a long time, we’re going to do a Q&A Episode! Between email, social media, or just real-life interactions, I get questions daily about training, coaching, business/personal development, etc. So this month, I’m going to answer a handful of questions that I think will help make YOU a better trainer, coach, or business owner. And if you enjoy this episode, I personally (and selfishly!) had a ton of fun doing it, so please let me know if you’d like me to make this a regular thing. Thanks and enjoy!   Are we going to do some high-force training? Absolutely. But if I want to get somebody ready for competitive sport, there has to be an element of high-speed training in there as well. – MR   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: The step-by-step process we use to onboard new staff at IFAST. How we help our coaches learn the program design process – both as interns, and then later on, as full-time coaches Should client sessions expire at the end of every month? And if so, WHY do you do this as a biz owner? My proudest moment (or 10) in coaching KPI’s I’m using to determine the effectiveness of my flywheel training with my athletes Why you might choose front-foot elevated (i.e. loading-focused) versus rear-foot elevated (propulsion-focused) split-squat variations. Adam Loiacono on Rebuilding, Rehabilitating and Reconditioning the Athletic Knee

Adam Loiacono is the Director of Rehab for the Phoenix Suns in the NBA, and before his time there, he spent another 8-10 years working in pro soccer. So as someone that has seen more than his fair share of knee issues over the years, in this episode, we’re going to take a deep dive into everything knee pain. We start by talking about his assessment process, and how he evaluates his athletes at both the joint and system level. From there, we talk about rehabilitation, the KPI’s he uses to determine progress, and how he gauges if an athlete is back to 100% function. We talk a bit about tendinopathy, as this is something we’re both seeing more and more of. And last but not least, we talk about how we can better protect our young athletes from injury.   The testing battery that we’ve previously used for ACL’s isn’t as reliable as we once thought. – Adam Loiacono   This week on the Physical Prep Podcast: What’s new since the last time Adam was on, and how he’s FINALLY getting a break after a whirlwind two years. His overarching philosophy and thoughts on knee health. The athletic knee evaluation process: From local assessments to global movement patterns. KPI’s that Adam uses to determine knee function and how it’s progressing over time. Movement strategies athletes can use to “work around” sub-optimal knee function. His thoughts on return to play, and the measures he uses to determine an athlete’s preparedness for sport. Why tendinopathy is such an issue in the NBA, and some strategies and thoughts for addressing it. How you go about setting rehabilitation timeliness, as well as evaluating their effectiveness.   Adam’s Previous Podcasts: Physical Preparation with Adam Loiacono Adam Loiacono on Coaching and Culture Across Professional Sport Adam Loiacono on the Need for Systems, Values and Processes   Connect with Adam: Adam Loiacono on Instagram   Build Savage, Athletic Beasts with Exerfly! Flywheel training is a method of strength training where your athletes generate resistance by using the inertia of a flywheel instead of traditional gravity-based resistance training By accelerating and then decelerating a disk, your athletes generate resistance in both the concentric and eccentric portions of the lift, WITHOUT the need for ridiculously heavy weights. Standard free weight training is great for the early preparatory phases, but as athletes develop there’s more to it than just getting stronger at all costs. At some point, you need to prepare them for the massive eccentric forces they’ll experience on the field, court or pitch – and with Exerfly’s motorized technology, you can increase the eccentric overload of the lift anywhere from 1-80%! Exerfly is used by numerous teams in the NFL, NBA, over 50% of the English Premiere League, and numerous Olympic development programs. Now as a small business owner you may immediately assume that an Exerfly is out of your budget, because we all know that every penny counts. But Exerfly has you covered here as well – they offer 36-month, interest free-financing, so you can get started ASAP with your training and pay as you go. 6 Things I’m Focusing on in My Programming and Coaching

When you’ve coached for 20+ years, create content, and work to mentor young coaches, you tend to answer a lot of questions. But one of the questions I’ve been asked the most recently is this: What has changed about your programming in the past 2-3 years? Or maybe along those same lines: How have you continued to evolve your training and coaching in recent years? So in today’s solo podcast, that’s exactly what we’re going to talk about – 6 things I’m focusing on in my programming and coaching right now!   Ask Yourself: Are they using strategies to compensate or work around previous injuries?   This week on the Physical Prep Podcast: Why my core philosophy or “Big Rocks” when it comes to programming and coaching have not (and probably will not) change. The role isometrics play in my programming, as well as the differences between overcoming and yielding ISO’s. Isolation work: Friend or foe? Should you be blowing up calves, quads and hamstrings if necessary? Why internal rotation is such a key measure, and how to unlock it with your clients and athletes. How a seminar with Lee Taft and Nick Winkelman in 2012 initiated my journey to becoming a better speed and movement coach. The role force development plays in a program, and why athletes shouldn’t just be focusing on maximal strength to enhance athletic performance. Why the foot is such a critical structure, and why I’m placing a bigger emphasis on barefoot and gait training in my programs.   Books and Links Referenced: Podcasts: Dr. Keith Baar on Building Bulletproof Tendons Lee Taft Physical Prep Podcasts Bill Hartman Physical Prep Podcasts Tools and Gear: Exerfly Monkey Foot SmartTools Blood Flow Restriction   Build Savage, Athletic Beasts with Exerfly!
