3 Questions You MUST Answer to Be a Successful Trainer or Coach
If you’re serious about becoming a better trainer or coach, at some point you need to ask yourself some big questions.
For instance, what’s your philosophy when it comes to training?
What groups or populations do you want to serve?
And assuming this is a career (and not a hobby), what are you going to charge for your time?
While these questions may sound simple at first glance, they’re definitely not easy.
So in today’s episode, I’m going to take you step-by-step through these questions and help you figure out what’s most important TO YOU as a trainer or coach.
What do you truly believe in when it comes to training? What are the overarching principles you can follow? – Mike Robertson
This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:
How training broken powerlifters helped me form my training philosophy.
Why your philosophy needs to be rooted in principles versus specific training mediums.
The importance of working with a broad swath of clients and athletes early-on in your career.
How my wide-ranging, general training background has served me well as I’m now more specialized.
Questions you can ask yourself to figure out WHO you should be training, or who “your people” are.
Is training a hobby for you? Or a career? And how does that impact your rates?
The sweet spot of pricing, and my thoughts on where it’s easiest to be successful over the long-haul.
Three side notes you absolutely MUST LISTEN to with regards to your pricing (this section alone will save you a lot of headaches if you take my advice!)

Kevin Neeld on FAI, Movement Variability, and Eccentric Training in Ice Hockey
Kevin Neeld is the Head Performance Coach for the Boston Bruins, where he oversees all aspects of designing and implementing the team’s performance training program, as well as monitoring the players’ performance, workload and recovery.
Prior to his time in Boston, Kevin spent 2 years as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for the San Jose Sharks after serving as the director of a private sports performance facility in New Jersey for 7 years, working with pro, college, junior and elite level youth hockey players. He also served as a strength and conditioning coach with the U.S. Women’s Olympic Ice Hockey Team for 5 years.
This episode is chock-full of great information, as we break down topics like movement variability, how to train the brakes and build better deceleration, and what he’s learned working in professional sports for the past 7 years.
I think of movement variability in two buckets: There’s micro-movement variability on the individual joint level, and macro-movement variability which is more the global movement patterns and movement sequencing. – Kevin Neeld
This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:
The formal bio/intro, and what’s new in Kevin’s world.
How he addresses and works around FAI (femoral acetabular impingement) with his athletes.
His current thoughts on movement variability, and how he address this throughout his programs.
How Kevin is training the brakes and improving deceleration with his athletes.
The various eccentric training methods he’s using in his programs.
Kevin’s thoughts on how you can incorporate plyos into a program without sacrificing strength.
Lessons he’s learned during his 7 years working in the NHL.
The mistakes he’s made, and how he’s grown and evolved from them.
And last but not least, Kevin’s professional goals for the upcoming year!

June Q&A: VBT, Personalizing Group Sessions, and Professional Development
It’s June, and we’re back with another KILLER Q&A Episode!
This month was fun because I had a nice mix of questions to answer. On one hand, I had some X’s and O’s questions about how to get more out of your programs and coaching.
And on the flip side, I also got some higher-level philosophical questions on continuing education and how to make our industry a little bit better.
Regardless, there’s something in here for everyone – so let’s dive in!
You have to get really clear on what works in theory or in a laboratory setting, and what people are really doing. You have to understand the dichotomy between the science and practical side of what we do. – Mike Robertson
This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:
Monthly recap, what I’m working on, and what I’m excited about in the coming months.
My thoughts on VBT (or velocity-based training), how it can be useful, and the brand that I most recommend.
How to personalize team training sessions, both in collegiate or ANY large-group setting.
What’s missing from the certification/licensure process to help raise the bar on our profession.
The future of continuing education for both RTS and the industry as a whole.
My thoughts on the 3/7 method of lifting, and general principles for discerning if a program is valuable or not.
A fun lightning round where we talk about program design, movies, and what summer looks like here in Indy!

Matthew Ibrahim on Building the Brakes and Training Deceleration
Matthew Ibrahim currently serves as the Assistant Professor of Exercise Science at Quincy College, Adjunct Professor of Exercise Science at Maryville University, founder of Athletic Performance University (AthleticPerformanceU.com) and Ph.D. Candidate in Human & Sport Performance.
As a public speaker, Matthew has presented nationally in over 25 U.S. states, and he’s also in the midst of writing a book through Human Kinetics on the topic of training for athletic performance.
And last but definitely not least, Matthew is still a coach – and I think that’s a big reason we had so much fun chatting here today.
In this episode, we take a deep dive into deceleration and building the brakes. As strength coaches we love to build higher vertical jumps, faster 40’s, and bigger squats and deads, but on a field, court or pitch you better be able to manage and redirect those forces if you want to be successful!
The big lifts are the steak, the accessory lifts are your rice and broccoli, and your targeted isolation work is the salt, pepper and seasoning. – Matthew Ibrahim
This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:
Why building the brakes are so important, and how Matthew originally got into this topic.
The role of the weight room, and why we can’t forget about force production and strength development.
How compound lifts, accessories, AND targeted isolation work all have a role to play in your training program.
Why training deceleration is a big piece of the puzzle, and why you can’t just train in the sagittal plane.
Learning how to attenuate vertical forces and LAND more effectively.
Why snapdowns and low-level vertical landing progressions aren’t enough over the long-term, and how to progress these activities.
How to take a standard training session and seamlessly integrate your deceleration work into it.
What Athletic Performance University is, and why Matthew created it.
How to better integrate the philosophical/educational side of S&C with the applied and practical to create the next great generation of coaches.

Build Savage, Athletic Beasts with Exerfly!
This week’s episode of the Physical Preparation Podcast is brought to you by Exerfly.
Flywheel training is a method of strength training where your athletes generate resistance by using the inertia of a flywheel instead of traditional gravity-based resistance training
By accelerating and then decelerating a disk, your athletes generate resistance in both the concentric and eccentric portions of the lift, WITHOUT the need for ridiculously heavy weights.
Standard free weight training is great for the early preparatory phases, but as athletes develop there’s more to it than just getting stronger at all costs.
At some point, you need to prepare them for the massive eccentric forces they’ll experience on the field, court or pitch – and with Exerfly’s motorized technology, you can increase the eccentric overload of the lift anywhere from 1-80%!
Exerfly is used by numerous teams in the NFL, NBA, over 50% of the English Premiere League, and numerous Olympic development programs.
Now as a small business owner you may immediately assume that an Exerfly is out of your budget, because we all know that every penny counts.
But Exerfly has you covered here as well – they offer 36-month, interest free-financing, so you can get started ASAP with your training and pay as you go.
And when you factor in a 30-day money back guarantee, 2- year warranty AND free shipping, the Exerfly really is a solid investment.

And to pull it all together, we discuss career development, how to guide your continuing education, and how pizza and physical prep are incredibly similar. Enjoy!

May Q&A: Movement Models, Con Ed and Augmented Eccentrics
And we’re back!
It’s been over a month since we did a Q&A episode, so I knew I needed to get one in sooner than later.
This week, we’ve got a ton of fun topics to discuss.
For starers, how do you determine your own weaknesses and plan your continuing education?
How do you help middle-aged weekend warriors get back out on the field, court or pitch?
And last but not least, what are augmented eccentrics? And should you be using them with your athletes?
We dive into all that – and much more – in this new episode!
Just like when you’re training your athletes you use a needs analysis, you need to do the same thing for YOURSELF when you’re creating your continuing education program. – Mike Robertson
This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:
A brief life update regarding kiddos, coaching, and IFAST 4.0
Nick B – What’s your process for planning out continuing education? How far out do you plan? How do you go about choosing topics to go deeper on?
Nate B – Middle aged client started getting back into basketball but is so achy for days after? Tips?
Adam H – What are your thoughts on augmented eccentrics? Very popular now and curious what you think. Thanks!
Johnny B – Can you talk a little more about the RESET (R2) part of your R7 model? Do you train just one side sometimes? Thanks!
Jan – Hello Mike, i would like to know how you can determine if you have anterior or posterior compression in the pelvis and how it shows in your assessment of the straight leg raise, supine knee flexion, IR and ER during supine hip flexion? Or what are you looking for during assessing the split squat. What is normal in the loading and propulsion phase of the movement? I have a hard time understanding this?
Shaun C – Is the Overhead Press optional? And when does the next CCC open?
Emotion Fitness – What Business System would you recommend for for nutrition coaching?
Steve C – What are you Top 3 hip-hop albums of all time? And what do you train to?
(Note: Life After Death was the Biggie album I meant to say! Ready to Die is a classic as well but LAD was in a constant rotation throughout college)
