20 Tips for Young Coaches

Bringing back a little old-school flavor this week my friend… You see, a few years back, someone asked me this very simple question: If you could give one piece of advice to a young coach or trainer, what would it be? And needless to say, that one little question turned into one really long, in-depth podcast! So with all the travel and things going on the past couple of weeks, I wanted to share this podcast again because I feel like it’s every bit as impactful today as it was then. So without any further ado, let’s goooooooooo! As a trainer, as a coach, we have to listen. Use your ears. Actively listen. When a client or athlete tells you something, verbalize back to them in similar – but not exact words – what they just said. They’re going to feel like you’re really hearing them. This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: Why you should show up early to sessions. Starting vs. Finishing Why the old school mantra of “2 eyes, 2 ears, 1 month” is important for coaches Ways to approach older coaches and ask for advice. The “Be Where Your Feet Are” philosophy. Why you should get comfortable being uncomfortable. The value of working with clients of all shapes and sizes. It’s NOT about YOU. The role and value of mentors in your development (and how to find one). Why you should be focused on becoming a great note-taker. How “Beginners Mind” can help you constantly question your thought process – and evolve as a coach. Stop the Frustration! Get the Complete Coach Certification Are you a young fitness trainer or coach? Are you frustrated by the results you’re getting or the lack of resources available to learn the skills you need to be successful? Are you struggling to get enough clients or wondering how long you’ll be able to follow your passion for helping others? It’s time to stop the frustration and stop worrying. It’s time to get certified! If you’re serious about improving your results, serious about becoming a better coach, and serious about increasing your bottom line, then you need the Complete Coach Certification. Adam Petway on the Mechanisms Behind ACL and Achilles Tears

It’s estimated that somewhere between 100,000 and 200,000 people tear their ACL every year. And while Achilles tears aren’t anywhere near that level, it’s obvious that the numbers for this injury are on the rise as well. In a best case scenario, with an ACL or Achilles tear you’re looking at a grueling 9, 12 or even as long as 18 month rehab process. And in a worst case scenario? It could be career ending. That’s why I wanted Adam Petway to come on the podcast. Adam has spent hundreds of hours watching game film and diving deep into the mechanisms behind both ACL and Achilles tears, and what he’s found is pretty darn cool. For instance, did you know there’s one specific pattern you see in basically every Achilles tear? And while not quite as predictable, he’s figured out the 3 primary scenarios when athletes tear their ACL’s as well. So in this podcast, we talk about HOW these injuries occur, as well as strategies to prevent them.   Older athletes are more at risk than younger athletes (for an Achilles tear). The average age of an NBA athlete is 24 years old, but the average age of an NBA athlete that ruptures their Achilles tendon is 29.3 – so we found older athletes are more predisposed. – Adam Petway   This Week on the Physical Preparation Podcast: How Adam went from BASKETBALL coach to basketball STRENGTH COACH How he got started researching and breaking down ACL and Achilles tears The biomechanical components and movement strategies you repeatedly see when someone tears an Achilles in basketball. Potential co-factors seen when an athletes suffers an Achilles tear. Training strategies you can implement to help keep your athletes’ Achilles healthy! The 3 common movement strategies seen when someone tears an ACL. What a “cast” and “pro-hop” are – and how to coach/train them more effectively. Other potential risk factors you might see in an athletes who tears an ACL, including style of play and instability in readiness scores. Joel Jamieson on Metabolic Optimization, Longevity and the Future of Sports Supplements

Longevity, anti-aging and metabolic health are things that have fascinated me for years, so when my guy Joel Jamieson said he wanted to jump on a podcast and talk about this stuff, I was all ears. In this episode, we start by talking about metabolic optimization – including what most people think of when they hear the word “metabolism,” and why Joel has a more well-rounded and diverse definition. We talk about mitochondria – why they’re critically important for health, the numerous roles they play, and how to develop not only MORE mitochondria but higher-quality ones as well. From there we dive into the brass tax and discuss how you can actually make an impact with all of this information. We talk about the tests you have access to (including both free and paid options), and then how to make impactful changes with your training, nutrition and supplementation to optimize your metabolism and help you live a longer, healthier life. Needless to say this is a FASCINATING show, and I really think you’re going to love it.   Mitochondria do basically everything…they’re directing growth, proliferation, immunity, inflammation, a really wide variety of things. – Joel Jamieson   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: Joel’s background, how he got started in fitness, and what he’s up to these days Our typical definition of “metabolism,” and how Joel would look at it in a more holistic fashion versus just “burning calories” Metabolic optimization: What it is, and why you should care about it Why your mitochondria are so important for not only conditioning, but overall health as well The numerous roles your mitochondria play in health and longevity What mitochondrial quality control is, and how it works How to test for mitochondrial health and function – from free and easy to paid and in-depth options Training strategies you should be using to improve mitochondrial quantity and quality Why “you are what you eat” isn’t too far from the truth How Joel is working to change the supplement game forever   Resources Mentioned: Joel’s Website – 8WeeksOut.com Joel’s Instagram How to Optimize Your Metabolism by Unlocking the Power of Mitochondria with Conditioning   Stop the Frustration! Drake Berberet: The Beginners Guide to Assessing and Training with Force Plates

Whether you like it or not, I can say with a lot of confidence that technology in sport is here to stay. As tech becomes more and more prevalent – not to mention more cost effective to private facilities and end-users – I think we’re going to see an explosion in sports science and data-driven training in the years to come. And it’s for that exact reason that today’s guest is Drake Berberet of Hawkin Dynamics. Drake is the VP of Performance & Brand at Hawkin Dynamics, and he also serves as the Performance Data Scientist at NCAA Division III Colby College in Waterville, Maine. Prior to Hawkin, Drake was the Applied Sport Scientist for the University of Illinois Men’s & Women’s Basketball teams for 2 seasons. And last but definitely not least, he also owns a private training facility serving over 300 youth athletes annually in Central Illinois, and consults for technology companies in sport, health, & connected fitness.   The ISO belt squat is much easier because they’re pushing into the ground as hard as they can and there’s no limitation due to grip strength. – Drake Berberet   This Week on the Physical Preparation Podcast: Drake’s career path, and how he moved from primarily coaching to working for Hawkin Dynamics. Why people use force plates, and what you can measure with one. What got Drake interested in force plates, as well as his first experiences using them. The advice he’d give to someone who is interested in using force plates, but doesn’t know where – or how – to start. How to use constraints early-on to avoid overwhelm and get the most out of any new technology you might adopt. 19 Ninja Tricks to Write Better Training Programs

If you’re a trainer or coach, you have to write programs. And trust me – there are tons of great resources out there to help you. I’m preferential to my Complete Coach Certification or Complete Coach Seminar, but again, I’m biased… But here’s the thing – the X’s and O’s are all fine and dandy, but sometimes you want specifics. Or nitty-gritty details. And sometimes, you just want strategies to help you get in the right mindset to write an awesome training program! So this show is all about programming – I talk successes, failures, and what I do to hedge my bets and make sure each and every program I write is legit. And if you’d like to see the full transcription to this podcast, just head over here.   Am I chasing – and am I GETTING – the adaptation that I want? Because sometimes the adaptation doesn’t happen in 4 weeks! – Mike Robertson   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: Why you should understand the foundational principles of program design FIRST. Why basic is often better than complex. The ONE THING you need to focus on when writing a program. A popular question: How long should you go before changing your workouts? The REAL REASON you program time under tension/tempo. Keys to help streamline your program design process. How off-days determine what you can really do during training sessions. Why exercise selection is so critical – and how to make BETTER choices. Thoughts on in-season versus off-season training. Dr. Jenn Reiner-Marcello on the Intersection between Movement and Sports Science in Baseball

Dr. Jennifer Reiner-Marcello has 20 years of experience in the sports performance industry ranging from the private setting, college, and professional teams. Over the last 7 years, she has focused her efforts in baseball including rehabilitation for the San Diego Padres and reconditioning for the Minnesota Twins. While at the Twins, she created and deployed the reconditioning program including establishing, developing, and executing a systematic approach for coordinating motion-capture data, force-place mound information, video breakdown, strength and conditioning assessments, orthopedic evaluations, movement assessments, and hitting and pitching coaches’ assessments to reduce injury, improve skill, and drive performance. Now I realize that’s a mouthful, but I promise we’re going to take all that and make it incredibly practical as we try to find the intersection between assessments, movement and sports science in baseball.   When you can piece all of those parts together, of what their strategy is and you see it play out in all these different scenarios, it allows you to narrow your intervention so that you’re much more targeted and can maybe get what you want to achieve on the first try. – Jenn Reiner-Marcello   This Week on the Physical Preparation Podcast: How Jenn got started in the world of physical preparation. A detailed overview of Jenn’s assessment movement assessment, from table tests to gross movements. How to improve athlete buy-in with your testing and assessment process. Merging sports science and tech with what you’re seeing in your movement and table tests to get a “big picture” overview. The tech that’s currently driving baseball, and what it can tell you about an athlete’s performance. How to make data work for you, versus letting it overwhelm you. September Q&A: Program Design, Competing Demand and Gen Pop Athletes

We’re back with our monthly Q&A show friend! These have been so much fun to record, and offers a nice balance between me hosting the show, and me (hopefully) providing some of my own unique thoughts and insights into training. This week’s episode is going to cover a ton of questions around program design. We’re going to talk about off-season training layouts, and how to write more effective off-season workouts. We’ll talk about programming speed and power for your gen pop clients and athletes. And in my favorite part of the show, we’re going to talk about how you can write programs that simultaneously develop strength AND conditioning. Like I said there’s a ton of ground covered here, so I really hope you enjoy this episode!   The question you have to ask yourself is this: What qualities can you NOT develop during the competitive season? – Mike Robertson   This week on the Physical Prep Podcast: How does the ground prep series work? Why do I feel so good after I do it? And when do YOU use it? – James What’s your process for prioritizing the needs of your athletes when you have them for such a short time? And on the flip side of that, when you have a long time with an athlete, how do you pick where to start and how to prioritize? – Zach How do you write programs incorporating both strength and conditioning together, but not choosing or using conflicting methods or techniques?! – Michael How do you reconcile between increasing strength, but also restoring expansion/movement options/movement quality within a single program? – Alec How do you know when you can safely implement explosive exercises for normal gen pop clients. How do you know when they’re ready? – Paulius   Related Links: The Ground Prep Series Joel Jamieson’s Website   Build Savage, Athletic Beasts with Exerfly! This week’s episode of the Physical Preparation Podcast is brought to you by Exerfly. Flywheel training is a method of strength training where your athletes generate resistance by using the inertia of a flywheel instead of traditional gravity-based resistance training By accelerating and then decelerating a disk, your athletes generate resistance in both the concentric and eccentric portions of the lift, WITHOUT the need for ridiculously heavy weights. Standard free weight training is great for the early preparatory phases, but as athletes develop there’s more to it than just getting stronger at all costs. At some point, you need to prepare them for the massive eccentric forces they’ll experience on the field, court or pitch – and with Exerfly’s motorized technology, you can increase the eccentric overload of the lift anywhere from 1-80%! Exerfly is used by numerous teams in the NFL, NBA, over 50% of the English Premiere League, and numerous Olympic development programs. Now as a small business owner you may immediately assume that an Exerfly is out of your budget, because we all know that every penny counts. But Exerfly has you covered here as well – they offer 36-month, interest free-financing, so you can get started ASAP with your training and pay as you go. And when you factor in a 30-day money back guarantee, 2- year warranty AND free shipping, the Exerfly really is a solid investment.
