Eric Schmitt on Program Design and Agile Periodization in the NBA
If you’ve ever wondered how to write training programs for an NBA athlete, you’re going to love this episode.
Whether we’re talking about off-season development, managing the grind of an 82-game season, or bringing an injured athlete back to 100%, today’s guest has seen it all.
Eric Schmitt is in his fifth year as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach with the Memphis Grizzlies.
And prior to his arrival in Memphis, he served as the Director of Sports Performance at the University of California, Santa Barbara from 2016-2019, and he came to UCSB after serving as an Assistant Sports Performance Director at UCLA from 2013-2016.
And in this episode, Eric and I are going to take a deep dive into program design for NBA athletes.
By just training you can get a good idea if someone has been training…and if someone hasn’t been training that’s pretty evident as well. So you can treat that session like an evaluation without having to go through more formal testing measures. – Eric Schmitt
This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:
Eric’s background and how he got started in the world of physical preparation.
The exit interview process, and how he goes about setting goals for the off-season.
Why frequently tapping into and talking to your athletes sets the stage for long-term success.
How private S&C coaches can best integrate with NBA coaches to get the best results for the athlete.
Why bouncing around from city-to-city may look cool on the ‘gram, but ultimately hampers development.
The role of transparency in the communication process, and why this is so critical to an athletes success.
The intake and evaluation process athletes go through when they report for pre-season training camp.
Why Roy Hibbert told me he wasn’t doing any testing or evaluation for at least the first week of our training together.
Nerding out on program design: The micro, meso and macrocycles the Grizz use to plan and periodize the in-season.
Why utilizing minimum effective dose is crucial, and how much work you REALLY NEED to maintain strength qualities.
Return to play, and how to effectively collaborate between athletic trainers, physical therapists and strength coaches.

Episode #400! The Past, Present and Future of RTS and IFAST
Can you believe it???
400 freakin’ episodes of the Physical Prep Podcast.
It’s crazy just typing that number, let alone thinking that I’ve actually recorded and produced that many shows!
But here’s the thing – the goal was never to do 400 shows.
The goal was to do 50-100, and then shut it down.
But the longer I do this, the more I enjoy it.
The conversations.
The people.
The learning!
So in today’s episode, I’m going to take you on a long and winding tour of IFAST, Robertson Training Systems, and what you can look forward to in the months and years to come here on the podcast.

Bill Hartman on How Body Shapes Drive Movement and Performance
Have you ever wondered why some athletic endeavors come so easily to certain people?
For instance, some people can just jump out of the gym.
Others can run for days and never seem to tire.
And some can squat or deadlift the equivalent of a compact car while barely breaking a sweat!
Well if you’ve ever wondered how body shapes impact your ability to express athleticism then THIS is the show for you.
Bill Hartman is known for finding solution for people in pain that have failed with other forms of treatment. He’s the owner of IFAST Physical Therapy, and my business partner at Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training for over 15 years now.
But beyond his skills as a physical therapist, he’s probably more well-known these days for creating what he describes as “The Model” – which is a truly unique way to looking at human movement, and what we’ll be focusing on in this show.
All measurements on the table are dirty. All movements are multi-factorial. But the goal is to start to shift the probabilities in our favor. – Bill Hartman
This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:
A little bit about Bill, and what’s new since the last time we were on the show.
What prompted him to create “The Model.”
The two archetypes, and why having a Wide or Narrow infrasternal angle (ISA) impacts your movement.
What’s the difference between an archetype and a configuration? And why should you care?
Why Bill took the standard, 3-plane movement model and condensed it down to one.
The role of table testing in his assessment process.
Should trainers and coaches take them time to learn table tests? And if so, where should they start?
Bill’s thoughts on the gait cycle, and why foot contacts are so important for improving movement strategy.
Why “flat feet” aren’t necessarily a bad thing.
How shifting your center of gravity back can unlock your mobility and reduce pain in the ankles, knees, hips and lower back.
What Bill wished he knew earlier in the process, and what he’s working on now to take his model to the next level.
Last but not least, a really found lightning round where we talk Van Halen concerts, 80’s movies, and Bill’s budding music career.

Derek Hansen: Why Are We Seeing More Achilles Tendon Ruptures Than Ever Before?
Derek Hansen been working with athletes in speed, strength and power sports since 1988. Originally working in Track and Field, Derek has expanded his services to assist athletes in all sports with an emphasis on speed development.
He has since worked with some of the top performers in the world as a coach and a consultant – including Olympic medalists, world record holders, Canadian National team athletes, professional sports organizations, and professional athletes from numerous sports.
And in today’s episode, Derek and I are going to take a deep dive into Achilles tendon tears – an issue that’s growing increasingly common in both the general population and athletes alike.
Everybody says, “Well that’s the fastest track spike…let’s turn soccer shoes and football cleats into a track spike because we want them to run faster.” So now you have a shoe that’s light and stiff, but doesn’t have the width and structure to be stable. – Derek Hansen
This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:
A quick bio of Derek, and what’s new since the last time we chatted.
What got Derek so interested in the topic of Achilles tears.
The numbers what show us Achilles tendon ruptures on the rise, and why he thinks we’re seeing that.
How age impacts the Achilles tendon – and why sometimes younger athletes may actually be at increased risk!
Why defensive players in the NFL may be at an increased risk when compared to their offensive counterparts.
The movement strategies that may happen prior to an Achilles tear.
Why we’re actually starting to see Achilles ruptures occur in acceleration and sprinting, and what that tell us about our training programs.
The role of previous history on Achilles injury, and why we need to be looking at injury history and performance on BOTH sides of the body.
Derek’s thoughts on the “Exposed Window:” What it is, and why we need to be protective of our athletes during this time.
Can we just blame it all on turf? We dive into the nuance of this argument, and why there’s more to this question (especially in the NFL).
The interaction between surface and footwear, and how all of that impacts loading on the connective tissues and joints.
Derek’s overall thoughts on training, and how you can start to build a holistic training program that improves performance while limiting exposure to potential Achilles issues.

Dr. Stuart McGill on Assessing, Rehabbing and Training the Spine
Dr. Stuart McGill is often considered to be the world’s foremost expert on spinal biomechanics. His patient list ranges from the general population to some of the world’s most elites athletes, and his work has produced over 240 peer reviewed journal papers and 4 books.
In this mashed up replay from two of my most popular episodes, Dr. McGill and I cover a wide range of topics – from lower back movement assessments to program design and everything in between, if you have questions about the lower back or core, Dr. McGill is your guy.
And in case you didn’t pick up on it in my intro, I want to say it again here: Dr. McGill has been one of the most influential people in my life as a coach. His work has heavily influenced me throughout my career, and I’ll be forever grateful for both his mentorship and kindness over the years.
Now let’s jump in and talk about backs!
In the UFC the strikers with the bigger muscles end up “pushing” their punches – they’re slower because the use muscle. The ones who strike the hardest are the ones who create the “pulsive” strength. – Dr. Stuart McGill
This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:
What led Dr. McGill to the world of physical preparation and back rehabilitation.
The assessment process Dr. McGill takes his patients and clients through.
How the assessment process dictates and drives the training process.
The reasoning behind using pain-free movement to expand the movement menu.
Virtual Surgery: What it is, and why you should be using it.
The worst back he’s ever seen, as well as one of the best results he’s ever had.
Tightening the screws – is there anything Dr. McGill is doing differently today versus a year ago?
Why the traditional model is outdated, and his thoughts on a superior model for rehabilitation.
Updates on what life is like since retiring from teaching.
How spinal type influences athletic performance.
The concepts of stiffness, relaxation and impulse, and how they impact athletic movement.
How rehabilitation approaches differ (and perhaps more importantly, are similar) between the lay population and elite athletes.
His thoughts on flexibility for the spine.
A shocking stat regarding injuries and personal training, and the advice he would give to young trainers and coaches to help keep them healthy.
Real talk: Of his four books, does he have a favorite?
Our always popular lightning round where we talk about his favorite summer past time, why he doesn’t miss teaching, and what’s next for Dr. McGill.

Their software interface is clean, intuitive and easy on the eye, so both you and your athletes can visualize what’s going on and how to improve their performance.
And last but not least, dual force plates allow you to see side-to-side asymmetries, especially in athletes who are in the return to play process.
With options to lease or buy, coupled with a 5-year warranty, Hawkin Dynamics force plates can take your performance facility to the next level.

July Q&A: HRV, Young Athlete Development, and Recapturing Shoulder Motion
It’s hard to believe it’s almost August, so we’ve got to knock out our monthly Q&A for July!
These are actually getting more fun as we go, as I think we’ve got a great blend of higher-level, philosophical questions combined with some nitty gritty, “try this today” practical application as well.
Plus, with the inclusion of the lightning round, I feel like we can cover A LOT of bases in just 45 minutes.
So sit back, relax, and let’s talk some training – shall we?

How to make training programs for young athletes (pre-high school) fun and engaging
My go-to exercises for developing shoulder mobility and rotation
How long it should take to get a client or athlete through a full R7 session
Thoughts on direct neck training, and who REALLY needs to be including this in their programs
A quick Vegas recap
