Episode 45: Food Obsession as Survival!

Have you ever thought that an obsession with food may have saved your sanity to some degree? I know that doesn’t sound logical, but for those who have been there… they get it! Believe it or not, obsessing about food, calories, weight, grams, recipes, and food shows may be a way YOU protect yourself! Struggling with the frustration of food obsession may be less painful than addressing emotions related to troubles in your current relationship, trauma from issues in your parents’ relationship, sadness about unresolved feelings about the loss of a loved one, anger related to previous abuse, fear about the amount of credit card debt you have accumulated over the past few years, or feeling overwhelmed with the combined stress of caring for ailing parents, the demands of a career, and the number of activities you need to get your children to every week. Food can be a “red herring,” something used to take your attention from something else, says Dr. Anita Johnston. Listen as I share remarkable information about this topic from Dr. Johnston’s incredible book titled “Eating in the Light of the Moon.” Think about how this may relate to YOU and your obsession with food … More importantly, learn what to do about it! Please subscribe to the show and rate it on Apple Podcasts, download free information at www.conniestapletonphd.com, and follow me on Twitter (@cstapletonphd), Instagram (@cstapletonphd), YouTube, LinkedIn, and on Facebook.

Episode 44: Better Decisions… about a GOAL Weight (dealing with Reality)!

When people opt to have bariatric surgery, they are asked several times in the process of preparing for surgery what their “goal weight” is. I find people’s responses very interesting. Some people say they are not overly interested in a particular number, stating instead they are more interested in being off medications, being able to travel, and living longer. Others appear to be very attached to a specific number. My only interest in a person’s goal weight is to determine whether or not it is realistic… based on medical facts. Listen in and find out what those medical facts are when it comes to having a realistic goal weight. Please subscribe to the show and rate it on Apple Podcasts, download free information at www.conniestapletonphd.com, and follow me on Twitter (@cstapletonphd), Instagram (@cstapletonphd), YouTube, LinkedIn, and on Facebook.

Episode 42: Keep It Simple

Any time we can work smarter and not harder is a win in my book. It’s interesting to really think about the many ways we complicate our own lives, but that’s a story for another day. Today, I want to share some ways we can simplify incorporating the many behavior changes required after surgery into your life as a bariatric patient. Keep in mind, that simple does not mean easy! While most of the behaviors recommended for post ops are “simple” in and of themselves, trying to incorporate them all into your life at one time is certainly not easy. Listen in as I share some tips that can help make your life a bit more simple. Life … simple? Well, that’s a stretch, but hey – anything we can do to make it even a tinch more simple helps! (Exactly how much is a tinch, anyway?)Please subscribe to the show and rate it on Apple Podcasts, download free information at www.conniestapletonphd.com, and follow me on Twitter (@cstapletonphd), Instagram (@cstapletonphd), YouTube, LinkedIn, and on Facebook.

Episode 41: Eating Frequency

Meet Taylor Rizzo! Taylor is a registered dietician who works exclusively with bariatric patients, both before and after their surgical procedures. And her patients love her! Which is the reason I have asked Taylor to be a regular presence on BariAftercare! On this, her first episode for BariAftercare, Taylor answers a number of questions frequently asked by patients: What is eating frequency? How frequently should you be eating as a bariatric patient? What’s so important about eating on a regular schedule? Can you engage in intermittent fasting or other fad diets as a bariatric patient? How does eating frequency affect blood sugar levels and cravings? Taylor teaches us that your body has to TRUST you to take care of it by giving it the nutrition it needs to protect it’s vital organs! If you aren’t doing that, you won’t see weight loss because your body is self-protective! By the way … that’s a good thing. Did you catch the use of the word TRUST a sentence or two ago? Help your body TRUST you by HONORING (another great word Taylor used)… honoring your body! Learn what it means to honor your body with healthy eating frequency as a bariatric patient! Your body will then be able to trust you to do what’s best for it! You AND your body will benefit! Please subscribe to the show and rate it on Apple Podcasts, download free information at www.conniestapletonphd.com, and follow me on Twitter (@cstapletonphd), Instagram (@cstapletonphd), YouTube, LinkedIn, and on Facebook.

Episode 40: Fear of Failure? Fear of Success?

Many people who have bariatric surgery carry a fear of failure into the procedure with them. This fear of failure may be readily acknowledged or could be a subconscious thought lingering from past experiences with weight regain.  Here’s a truth if ever there was a truth: human beings are not failures so if you’ve ever said, “I’m such a failure,” please reconsider! A human being may have setbacks or make mistakes in life. Setbacks and mistakes are events surrounding situations. Human beings are incredibly resilient, miraculous beings! As such, we can reframe what we label as a “failure” into ways to learn and grow! Sure… it makes sense, if you’ve experienced weight regain following previous times when you’ve lost weight that there would be some fear of regain… Regain does NOT equal failure! Listen in and learn more about how to avoid thinking of yourself or weight regain as a failure! And learn to set yourself up to continue putting forth effort even when you experience a setback! Please subscribe to the show and rate it on Apple Podcasts, download free information at www.conniestapletonphd.com, and follow me on Twitter (@cstapletonphd), Instagram (@cstapletonphd), YouTube, LinkedIn, and on Facebook.
