Episode 59: Onward and Forward!
The holidays, yesterday (and last year) are over. How were your holidays… foodwise, I mean?! The truth is, it doesn’t matter because we only have today in which to live! Focusing on living in the moment is a great tool to help you forego regrets about yesterday and stay away from worrying about tomorrow. When it comes to bariatric eating, focusing on the moment, or the meal you’re eating in the moment, is a very wise thing to do. You can choose to focus each and every time, on the one meal you are eating, following the bariatric basics for eating: protein first, plus a veggie, maybe a fruit, maybe a healthy carb or a reasonable serving of starch. Staying in the moment is a choice! In today’s podcast, you’ll hear about some things you may want to STOP doing and others you may want to START doing, lest you remain on the hamster wheel of weight loss and regain. Episode 58: The Present by Spencer Johnson
The Present is a book by Spencer Johnson. Since we’re in the throes of the holiday season, it seemed pertinent to share this story with you. As a bariatric patient, you can use the lessons in this book to stay focused on the present and create the future you are seeking by learning from the past. You may want to listen to this story several times, reflect on the messages in the book, and think carefully about how you can apply each lesson to your journey through the weight loss process so that you can maintain a healthy weight going forward, enjoying the joy and peace-filled life you envisioned when you began your journey. Speaking of joy and peace, these are my wishes for you in this holiday season and always. Episode 57: Resolutions No More!
Let’s get a jump-start on the New Year and talk about Resolutions. Here’s my suggestion: Don’t set any! The majority of people who set resolutions (promises they make) don’t follow through with them. If they did, the world would be full of physically healthier individuals as the majority of resolutions are related to improvements in physical health. Goals are a better bet in terms of follow-through, and yet, as James Clear, author of Atomic Habits points out, both winners and losers have the same goals. In order to rid yourself of the weight you want to lose and maintain that weight, having a daily system of behaviors, of good habits, is what will lead you to the winner’s circle. As a bariatric patient, your daily system needs to have some core components. Listen in and learn what those are! Then establish your unique system and you’ll remain at a healthy weight and enjoy living life fully! Episode 56: The Gift of YOU!
Gifts are on most people’s minds during the month of December. In the hustle and bustle of buying, wrapping and unwrapping gifts, take some time to think about that gift that is YOU! You ARE a gift! Your unique combination of talents, traits, and attributes deserves acknowledgement. From yourself! The examples of yourself as a gift shared in this podcast episode is worthy of self-reflection. Bariatric patients are easy to criticize themselves and often struggle to acknowledge their inner beauty. Give yourself the gift of recognizing yourself as a gift… a gift for yourself and to others! That’s a whole lot of repetitions of the word “gift.” How about giving the gift of letting others know about the BariAftercare podcast and the complete BariAftercare program, which can be found at www.bariaftercare.com. The positive benefits of acknowledging and expressing gratitude have been shown to last for weeks and months! And will be a motivator to keep you moving in the direction of living a healthy lifestyle at a healthy weight. Episode 51: Bonus Episode — The Bottom Line When it Comes to Maintaining a Healthy Weight!
We all know what the areas of strength are in our lives… and we also know the areas in which we could improve. What areas of your life do you identify as being really good at? Are you a good employee? A great spouse? A terrific parent? If so, it’s a given that your behaviors… your habits, in those areas of your life, reflect how you feel about yourself in those arenas. Good employees show up for work on time, put effort into their job duties, get to meetings on time prepared to discuss the items on the agenda. The same is true for other roles in which you excel. What about those areas of life in which you see yourself as less capable? It’s common for bariatric patients to describe themselves in a variety of negative ways when it comes to their struggles with food, weight loss, exercise and regain. It’s very likely that your habits around eating and exercise reflect how you feel about yourself in these areas. Today’s podcast again includes information from James Clear, author of Atomic Habits. Listen to what he has to say about a person’s self-identification and their behaviors and what this has to do with your long-term success as a post-op. His words and the research he notes are 100% in line with what my passion for working with bariatric patients is all about. Listen in and hear what I consider to be the bottom line in maintaining a healthy weight after bariatric surgery. Episode 50: Long Term Success Following Bariatric Surgery Depends on this…
Everyone who has bariatric surgery plans to have long-term success, usually described in terms of maintaining their weight loss over time. As you know, that is not always the case. Regain is a struggle for a lot of people after the “honeymoon period” is over. In the book Atomic Habits, the author, James Clear talks about the emphasis most people place on goals. He wisely points out that regardless of the goal, whether it be to win a sporting competition, be the champion of the spelling bee, or maintaining a healthy weight following bariatric surgery: “Winners and losers have the same goals.” Both baseball teams have the goal of winning the championship game. All of the 4th graders have the goal of winning the spelling bee. All bariatric patients have the goal of maintaining their weight loss following surgery. What’s more important than having goals, then? Listen in and hear what James Clear says. By the way, I wholeheartedly agree with him!
