Food and Nervous System Regulation

Food is integral to our survival and health, but it’s common for those with trauma to exhibit disordered eating, whether that be a history of dieting, bingeing, or fasting. These behaviors are truly a reflection of our dysregulated nervous system, and only once we start to heal it can we find food freedom.   During this episode, we’re talking about the health of our relationships with food and our body, and how nervous system regulation is a path to trauma healing. Jennifer and Elisbeth share their personal experience with distorted eating, and how they achieved food freedom.   We also explore the topics of diet culture, intuitive eating, the “good woman narrative,” and how food drives components of complex post-traumatic stress disorder, such as inner critic and perfectionism.   Tune in to learn more, and get guidance on establishing a healthier relationship with food!   Topics discussed in this episode:   Food as an output of the nervous system How eating behaviors affect the interoceptive system Effects of our traumatizing diet culture Food numbing emotions Additional pressures on women Experiencing the pleasure of food What distorts our perspective on our body Scarcity mindset Resources to start healing   Get more information on the Neuro Somatic Intelligence Certification: https://neurosomaticintelligence.com?aff=traumarewired   Sign up for the Food Freedom program here: https://brainbased-wellness.com/food-freedom/   Subscribe to the free Brain Training Video Series: https://brainbased-wellness.com/membership/?aff=Jenebug   Learn more about Brain-Based Wellness, here: https://brainbased-wellness.com?aff=Jenebug   Join the Trauma Rewired Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/761101225132846   Head to https://calendly.com/traumarewired/consultation for a consultation to identify trauma responses in your own life and learn how to train your nervous system to move out of behaviors that aren’t serving you!   Work with Jennifer:   https://linktr.ee/traumarewired   https://www.instagram.com/illuminatedwithjennifer/ FREE 1 Year Supply of Vitamin D + 5 Travel Packs from Athletic Greens when you use my exclusive offer: https://www.athleticgreens.com/rewired This episode was produced by Podcast Boutique http://www.podcastboutique.com

What is Applied Neurology?

If you’ve followed this podcast for even just a few episodes, you’ve heard about complex PTSD, the effects of trauma on the developmental brain, and how maladaptive behaviors form. Most importantly, you’ve learned that long-lasting change requires integration, a process supported by applied neurology.   Today, find out what applied neurology is and why it’s crucial to healing trauma from Trauma Rewired hosts Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristoff of Brain-Based Wellness. You’ll learn about the nervous system, the effects of trauma on our input systems, and how all the systems in our body work together to keep us safe — even when it has a negative impact on our health.   Elisabeth and Jennifer also explain how neurosomatic intelligence tools are a true and practical way to change our brain’s patterns. Addressing any trauma-caused deficits in your input system with nervous system training works for them and their clients, and it can work for you too.   Listen in to start understanding what’s going on in your body, and get yourself one step closer to healing your traumas!   Topics discussed in this episode:   Defining applied neurology and why it’s important Neurosomatic intelligence as an input driven system Performance vs. protective outputs The brain’s role in our survival and deficits in our input systems Using NSI tools to support self-regulation Emotional processing and breaking patterns The importance of building a relationship with your body Sensory mismatch and how we react to it Key takeaways from this episode   Learn more about Neuro-Somatic Intelligence https://neurosomaticintelligence.com?aff=traumarewired   Subscribe to the free Brain Training Video Series: https://brainbased-wellness.com?aff=Jenebug   Join the Trauma Rewired Facebook Group! Complex Trauma and the Developmental Brain (cont'd)

“We all know this phrase, ‘if you wanna get out of the hole, stop digging.’ But when you're in complex PTSD, the brain is digging and you can't make it stop. It just keeps going back to these same experiences and these same feelings. It shows up in long-term development of the nervous system. It shows up in the physical body. It shows up because we don't know how to stop the digging.”   Today, co-hosts Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristoff of Brain-Based Wellness are again joined by co-founder of the Neuro-Somatic Intelligence Coaching Certification Program, Matt Bush. During the second half of their discussion on complex trauma and the developing brain, you’ll learn why it’s so hard to break the brain’s unhealthy patterns and how you can “stop the digging.”   In this episode, Matt explains how the three areas of the brain make a framework to process emotions, regulate emotions, and incite action. Trauma Rewired has mentioned many times that without integration, long-lasting change is difficult, but without the survival brain and emotional brain working together, integration, specifically vertical integration, is impossible. This may sound overwhelming, but the good news change IS possible because of neuroplasticity.   If you want a deep understanding of vertical integration and how trauma affects the developing brain, tune in to learn more!   Topics discussed in this episode:   What is vertical integration? Our brain’s protective mechanisms and what triggers them Integration of emotional work and body work How developmental trauma affects vertical integration Dysregulation between the brain’s right and left hemisphere Effects of imbalances in the nervous system The SAID principle in relation to nervous system imbalance Creating safety to break the pattern of dysregulation Benefits of learning more about trauma and the brain   Interested in becoming a Neurosomatic Intelligence Coach? Complex Trauma and the Developmental Brain

“Impaired integration is such a hallmark of the traumatized brain. It disrupts our ability to balance our nervous system. Neurobiologist Dan Siegel says that at its very essence, the purpose of trauma therapy is to restore brain integration.”   On today’s episode, co-hosts Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristoff of Brain-Based Wellness discuss the neurological impacts of trauma, specifically how disassociation and fragmentation affect our brain integration. They’re joined by Matt Bush of Next Level Neuro and co-founder of the Neuro-Somatic Intelligence Coaching Certification Program.   Expect to understand more about how early childhood trauma results in brain dysfunction, shapes our basic functioning and filtration systems, and can overpower the cognitive mind. You’ll also learn what reintegrating memories actually means, and why integration is the key to healing.   Tune in to hear how neurosomatic intelligence can help get you to integrate and regulate your nervous system!   Topics discussed in this episode:   Defining complex trauma from a neurosomatic perspective How complex trauma affects us in our daily lives and our future Effects of trauma on brain development Dissociation and fragmentation of self Matt describes what high level integration looks like Memory integration and why people feel “stuck” Real examples of trauma responses overpowering their cognitive brain Disassociating from the different parts of your self   Interested in becoming a Neurosomatic Intelligence Coach? Trauma and the Inability to Rest

We briefly talked about the death cycle of winter and rebirth in the “Trauma & the Holidays” episode, but today, Trauma Rewired is addressing how trauma inhibits our ability to rest — which is a crucial element to healing and changing maladaptive behaviors.   Hosts Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristoff of Brain-Based Wellness discuss the consequences of poor rest, including derailing the brain’s functioning. Similar to when you’re fatigued and at your full capacity, constantly running on high alert can make us more susceptible to triggers and result in stress responses.   Most of us already know that sleep is necessary for our overall health and wellbeing, but letting the mind and body truly rest is also crucial to healing. Memory integration and nervous system regulation are infinitely harder to achieve when we don’t leave time for rest and recovery.   Tune in to learn why slowing down is sometimes hard to do, and how to support yourself in the process!   Topics discussed in this episode:   How trauma affects our internal states Why rest is crucial to our health, but can also feel threatening Actions Elisabeth is taking to change her behaviors and let herself rest Reasons it’s difficult to rest and recover, and its effects The loop of trauma and inability to rest Trauma and Stress responses Experiences with insomnia Is rest a privilege? Core Beliefs and Resolutions

It’s a common tradition to make resolutions in the New Year, most often relating to our bodies and our habits. New Year’s resolutions usually have an end goal of making us better people, but there’s a reason many people fail to make long-term changes.   During today’s episode on core beliefs and resolutions, Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristoff of Brain-Based Wellness explain why it’s not so easy for us to make these grand, albeit positive, changes. They discuss the unrealistic expectations we put on ourselves, as well as the neurology of core beliefs, including how these beliefs drive the behaviors we’re trying to change.   You’ll learn why the human body finds change threatening, how you can create safety in change, and what more is needed in order to prepare yourself for change. Real examples will help you discover how to then integrate these changes into daily practice.   To help you get started, this episode ends with a visualization practice to add to your toolkit!   Topics discussed in this episode:   Unrealistic expectations post-holiday season What prevents us from changing our bad behaviors NSI perspective of core beliefs How core beliefs affect our filtration system What can happen when you’re not ready to make a big change Minimum effective dose and using neuro tools The layered approach to making real, lasting change Elisabeth and Jennifer give examples of their own belief work A future visioning exercise   Subscribe to the free Brain Training Video Series: https://brainbased-wellness.com/free-subscription/   Learn more about Elisabeth Kristof and her company, Brain-Based Wellness, here: https://brainbased-wellness.com/about/   Join the Trauma Rewired Facebook Group!   Head to https://calendly.com/traumarewired/consultation for a consultation to identify trauma responses in your own life and learn how to train your nervous system to move out of behaviors that aren’t serving you!   Work with Jennifer: https://www.traumarewired.com/   https://linktr.ee/traumarewired   Instagram FREE 1 Year Supply of Vitamin D + 5 Travel Packs from Athletic Greens when you use my exclusive offer: www.athleticgreens.com/rewired This episode was produced by Podcast Boutique.
