Lisa Bryer on her addiction to heroin and the moment she asked for help
On today’s episode, I am joined by Lisa Bryer, a film and documentary producer who is best known for producing the epic box office success, The Last King of Scotland, which won an Oscar and many BAFTA awards. Considering her phenomenal success you might wonder why Lisa is here today but as you will soon discover, she battled with an addiction to drugs including heroin for eight years. After a friend recommended that she attend Narcotic Anonymous, she realised that she could break the cycle of drug use and she eventually managed to overcome her addiction. Today Lisa is still sober and spends a lot of her time helping other addicts. I’m so in awe of her recovery and I’m sure her story will inspire so many others.Find Lisa: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lisabryer1/?hl=enThe London Screen Academy: https://lsa.ac.uk/foundersFollow Hurt to Healing on Instagram: @hurttohealingpod--A big thank you our wonderful charity partner Shout. Susannah Constantine on prioritising what's on the inside rather than what's on the outside
I am over the moon to be joined by Susannah Constantine to kick off our special women's mental health series. Susannah is a novelist, journalist and podcaster with over 25 years experience in the media. You also might know her as the host of What Not To Wear alongside Trinny Woodall. While the show might have been about helping women love themselves from the outside in, this conversation just proves how Susannah has come to understand that if you support the inside, the outside will shine. Susannah bravely opens about her struggle with alcohol addiction and why it took so long for her to realise how serious the problem was. So if you listen to this and begin to question your own relationship with alcohol, then it might just be time to stop making excuses and ask for help.Find Susannah: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susannahconstantine/?hl=enBook: https://amzn.eu/d/7QRnZBGWebsite: https://susannahconstantine.co.uk/Follow Hurt to Healing on Instagram: @hurttohealingpod--A big thank you our wonderful charity partner Shout. HEALING 101: Recovery therapy for bulimia with Rachel Evans
On today’s HEALING 101, I am joined by Dr Rachel Evans, a chartered psychologist who specialises in eating disorder recovery. Her career choice was actually inspired by her own struggle with an eating disorder. Rachel knows exactly how it feels for everything you do to be ruled by thoughts of food and weight. However, one thing she is very keen to point out is that it’s not a one-size fits all approach when it comes to eating disorder recovery. In today’s episode we talk about how her work differs from traditional eating disorder therapy and why holistic support is so important. Holly Baxter on transforming the relationship with her body
I’m very excited to be joined today by Holly Baxter, a dietician, science educator, author, speaker and professional athlete in the sport of bodybuilding. Growing up in Tasmania, Holly had a heavy involvement in sports in her early life. However, when she began competing more seriously the emphasis on her performance and appearance set her up for an extremely difficult struggle with binge eating and bulimia which left her wondering whether she had any intrinsic value as a person. Like so many of us who have suffered with an eating disorder, she found the only thing that she could control in her life was what she ate. In this episode, Holly and I talk very candidly about the tricks the mind can play on you when you’re struggling with an eating disorder and how she got to a place where she was then able to ask for help. Holly now works with women in the body building space to create healthy relationships with food and to break down the barriers for how “women should look”. Thomasina Miers on how food ultimately became her medicine
Today I’m thrilled to be joined by a huge role model of mine, Thomasina Miers. Thomasina is a cook, who many might know for winning Masterchef, a writer, restauranteur and the co-founder of the successful Mexican street food restaurant, Wahaca. Thomasina has openly spoken about her own struggles with her mental health, particularly during her 20s. Her family has a history of both depression and alcoholism and her grandmother very sadly committed suicide when Thomasina was just 21. Thomasina also had a difficult relationship with food growing up and she admits that her childhood played a pivotal role in her getting caught up in a diet and binge cycle. However, it was ironically when she finally discovered food as a career that her life changed and it ultimately became her medicine.
