HEALING 101: Recovery therapy for bulimia with Rachel Evans

On today’s HEALING 101, I am joined by Dr Rachel Evans, a chartered psychologist who specialises in eating disorder recovery. Her career choice was actually inspired by her own struggle with an eating disorder. Rachel knows exactly how it feels for everything you do to be ruled by thoughts of food and weight. However, one thing she is very keen to point out is that it’s not a one-size fits all approach when it comes to eating disorder recovery. In today’s episode we talk about how her work differs from traditional eating disorder therapy and why holistic support is so important. Find Rachel:Website: https://eatingdisordertherapist.co.uk/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rachel.evans.phd/?hl=enFollow Hurt to Healing on Instagram:@hurttohealingpodA big thank you our wonderful charity partner Shout. Holly Baxter on transforming the relationship with her body

I’m very excited to be joined today by Holly Baxter, a dietician, science educator, author, speaker and professional athlete in the sport of bodybuilding. Growing up in Tasmania, Holly had a heavy involvement in sports in her early life. However, when she began competing more seriously the emphasis on her performance and appearance set her up for an extremely difficult struggle with binge eating and bulimia which left her wondering whether she had any intrinsic value as a person. Like so many of us who have suffered with an eating disorder, she found the only thing that she could control in her life was what she ate. In this episode, Holly and I talk very candidly about the tricks the mind can play on you when you’re struggling with an eating disorder and how she got to a place where she was then able to ask for help. Holly now works with women in the body building space to create healthy relationships with food and to break down the barriers for how “women should look”. Find Holly: Website: https://hbnutrition.com.au/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hollytbaxter/?hl=enFollow Hurt to Healing on Instagram: @hurttohealingpod--A big thank you our wonderful charity partner Shout. Thomasina Miers on how food ultimately became her medicine

Today I’m thrilled to be joined by a huge role model of mine, Thomasina Miers. Thomasina is a cook, who many might know for winning Masterchef, a writer, restauranteur and the co-founder of the successful Mexican street food restaurant, Wahaca. Thomasina has openly spoken about her own struggles with her mental health, particularly during her 20s. Her family has a history of both depression and alcoholism and her grandmother very sadly committed suicide when Thomasina was just 21. Thomasina also had a difficult relationship with food growing up and she admits that her childhood played a pivotal role in her getting caught up in a diet and binge cycle. However, it was ironically when she finally discovered food as a career that her life changed and it ultimately became her medicine. Find Thomasina: Website: https://www.thomasinamiers.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thomasinamiers/?hl=enFollow Hurt to Healing on Instagram: @hurttohealingpod--A big thank you our wonderful charity partner Shout. Shaun Flores on why we need to destigmatise OCD

I am so thrilled to be joined today by a man on a mission to raise awareness of the reality of OCD, Shaun Flores. When people talk about OCD, they often talk about it as a quirk or something almost productive, but anyone who lives with OCD knows this couldn’t be further from the truth. Shaun Flores has suffered from OCD since he was 27. He initially struggled with obsessive thoughts about his sexuality and it quickly moved on to harm, in particular sexual assault. When these thoughts initially took hold, Shaun became depressed and life became a burden he no longer wanted to carry. In today’s episode, Shaun shares his story and talks about why there is an urgent need to develop new and better treatments for OCD - something which is also a big passion of mine. I hope for anyone listening who is living with OCD, that Shaun’s story will reassure you that you can in fact emerge stronger and better.Find more information on Shaun: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theshaunflores/?hl=enFollow Hurt to Healing on Instagram: @hurttohealingpod--A big thank you our wonderful charity partner Shout.
