Rory Bremner on being diagnosed with ADHD and learning how to use it to his advantage
Today I am speaking to Rory Bremner, the famous British impressionist turned presenter, who made his name with his impersonation of Tony Blair which was so near the knuckle that the then Prime Minister actually asked him to write his speeches. However, beneath the facade, Rory has always struggled with his emotions and admits to suffering from big highs and lows. He was diagnosed with depression which hit him at unexpected moments and for many years, his ADHD and dyspraxia were ignored which in turn ended up effecting his movement, coordination and concentration. He ended up being diagnosed with the ADHD whilst he was making a BBC documentary and described it as ‘like having a brain like a pinball machine’. He also referred to his symptoms as ‘failures’, which they’re obviously not, but it’s these moments that are the most powerful as they show a true insight into the way he struggled to come to terms with the diagnosis. In this episode Rory speaks candidly about how he has learned to turn his ADHD to his advantage and why lists are his life line. You might even get a snippet of him performing!Find Rory Bremner:Twitter: @rorybremnerUK ADHD Partnership: https://www.ukadhd.com/rory-bremner.htm Follow Hurt to Healing on Instagram: @hurttohealingpod--A big thank you our wonderful charity partner Shout. HEALING 101: Cannabis addiction and CBD explained with Dr Timothy Fong
On today's Healing 101 I am joined once again by Dr. Timothy Fong, a clinical professor of psychiatry at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behaviour at UCLA. Dr. Fong specialises in addiction and today I am asking him about Cannabis Addiction. A staggering fourteen million people have used cannabis in the UK, making it the most popular illicit drug. While not everyone who uses cannabis will become addicted, 11% of users will develop a cannabis addiction, with that figure rising to 16% if you used cannabis as a teen. Today, I ask Dr Fong to explain how cannabis addiction develops and whether CBD products are worth using for anxiety disorders.Follow Hurt to Healing on Instagram:@hurttohealingpodA big thank you our wonderful charity partner Shout. Alasdair Gill on his journey to rehab and finding comfort in his father's words
Today, I'm speaking to chef and writer Alasdair Gill, the son of the well-known journalist AA Gill, about his own battle with addiction. Ali has spoken openly about how the words of his late father helped him to overcome his own addiction to drink and drugs. He explains how he hit rock bottom before finding the strength he needed to become sober two years ago with his father, Adrian, playing a crucial role in the breakthrough from Beyond the Grave. There were similarities between AA Gill’s personal struggle and Ali's, which were reflected in his father's memoir, which he penned after giving up alcohol aged 29. It was when Ali was presented with his memoir at a rehabilitation center near Edinburgh, which then instigated his own journey to sobriety. Spencer Matthews on life after alcohol and the impact of brotherly loss
On today’s episode, I am delighted to be speaking to Spencer Matthews, a successful entrepreneur, former Made in Chelsea cast member turned broadcaster and an incredible father of three children. Spencer is well known for his non-alcoholic drinks brand, Clean Co, which was created as a result of his unhealthy relationship with alcohol during his twenties which he saw as ‘an obstacle in his life that had to be removed’. Spencer talks openly about how much his life has changed since he made this decision as it put everything in perspective and allowed him to reassess his priorities. He has since gone on to conquer not only the drinks industry, but a number of extreme challenges including the Marathon De Sables and most recently he ventured to base camp of Mount Everest where he set out to find his oldest brother, Michael, who tragically disappeared while descending the mountain in 1999. I’m intrigued to speak to Spencer today about how he navigated the emotions that surfaced as a result of this recovery operation and how his attitude towards life has drastically changed in the last 10 years.Find Spencer: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/spencermatthews/?hl=enClean Co: https://clean.co/Follow Hurt to Healing on Instagram: @hurttohealingpod--A big thank you our wonderful charity partner Shout. HEALING 101: The relationship between mental health and menopause with Dr Fionnuala Barton
On today’s HEALING 101, I am speaking to Dr Fionnuala Barton who is a GP, Women’s Health Doctor and registered member of the British Menopause Society. She is passionate about optimising physical and emotional wellness for women at all stages of life and has particular interest in early recognition and management of perimenopausal and menopausal syptoms. Menopause itself is a topic which is slowly becoming more publicly discussed but I still fear that many of us don’t know enough about the impact it might have on the quality of our lives. I’m intrigued to learn more about how we can manage these symptoms and how we can have a proactive approach to prevent long-lasting harm both mentally and physically.Find Dr Barton:Website: https://www.themenopausemedic.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themenopausemedic/?hl=enFollow Hurt to Healing on Instagram:@hurttohealingpodA big thank you our wonderful charity partner Shout. Joanna Lumley on her experience of suffering a complete nervous breakdown
I am so thrilled and actually very starstruck to be joined by the one and only Joanna Lumley on today’s episode. I grew up watching her on Absolutely Fabulous, have admired her work with the Gurkhas, and have been fascinated by her unconventional upbringing and theatrical career. It was an honour to speak to Joanna about her incredibly colourful life: her career ups and downs, the pressure she faced growing up and her attitude towards mental health in the modern world. Whilst Joanna’s view might be one you don’t necessarily agree with, we can’t deny that mental health has become a huge buzzword in society. There’s an epidemic of influencers that are speaking on mental health’s behalf with little understanding and I do think it’s very important we properly educate ourselves about mental health as well as how complicated and nuanced so much of it is rather than just jumping on the bandwagon.Follow Hurt to Healing on Instagram: @hurttohealingpod--A big thank you our wonderful charity partner Shout. Tish Weinstock on her experience of pre natal depression and how she sought help
Depression during and after pregnancy afflicts many people, and health care practitioners say that the pandemic has only worsened this mental health issue. These kinds of depression can include deep sadness, heightened anxiety and incessant exhaustion that makes it hard for sufferers to care for their families, let alone themselves. Today, I will be talking to Tish Weinstock, a former beauty editor of Vogue, who wrote a very brave article about her own experience with prenatal depression. In this episode, Tish talks about how hopeless and alone she felt was pregnant with her first child. And I asked her all about her own battle with depression and what steps she took towards her own recovery. I sincerely hope that by sharing this conversation, it might help reassure any other expectant or new mothers who are struggling.Find Tish: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tishweinstock/?hl=enFollow Hurt to Healing on Instagram: @hurttohealingpod--A big thank you our wonderful charity partner Shout.
