Peter Tyrer on why personality disorders are very misunderstood
Peter Tyrer is the Professor of Community Psychiatry in the Centre for Mental Health in the Division of Experimental Medicine. Much of his recent work has been focused around personality disorders. Personality disturbance is very common, not just in psychiatric practice, and this importance has been largely unrecognized as the knowledge around this particular disorder is very poor. Many people feel very strongly about the term personality disorder but it’s a term that is misunderstood by almost everyone and needs to go. In this episode, Peter teaches us about the various different types of personality disorders, why they can be tricky to treat and the big question as to whether we are born with our personality or it’s shaped over time.Find Peter:https://www.imperial.ac.uk/people/p.tyrerBuy his book on personality disorders: https://amzn.eu/d/9U7Tg7uFollow Hurt to Healing on Instagram:@hurttohealingpodA big thank you our wonderful charity partner Shout. Prof Fiona McNicholas on eating disorders in children and adolescents
On today’s summer special we are joined by Professor Fiona McNicholas, a Consultant in child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Her clinical interests are eating disorders and I wanted to take the opportunity today to ask her about the differences between anorexia, bulimia and binge eating and particularly how this disorder impacts children and adolescence. Having suffered from an eating disorder which started when I was 12 years old, I’m always keen to learn more about how treatments are becoming more effective and the impact that early intervention can make. I was pleased to hear that the level of support needed for an eating disorder is now being recognised but I think one of the biggest takeaways from the conversation is that we shouldn’t ignore that parents or close friends watching their children suffer with these disorders may need to be supported too. HEALING 101: Exploring the link between men's mental health and sexual health
On today’s Healing 101, I am joined by Clinical Director & CBT Therapist, Lee Grant, to talk all about men’s sexual health and its impact on mental health. For instance, men suffering from severe depression, the rate of erectile dysfunction may reach up to 90%. But despite the significance and higher incidence of sexual dysfunction in men, most individuals who suffer do not seek help because they are embarrassed. Sexual health definitely still remains taboo and reclaiming it as a fundamental aspect of mental health should be a top priority.Find Lee Grant: https://onebright.com/our-team/clinicians/lee-grant/Follow Hurt to Healing on Instagram:@hurttohealingpodA big thank you our wonderful charity partner Shout. Shocka on hitting rock bottom and the importance of self love
Today I am speaking to Shocka, a Grime artist who rose to prominence as part of the Tottenham trio, Marvell. Shocka has seen the real highs and extreme lows of show business, having seen sudden success and sudden failure, from performing to packed out arena tours alongside famous names such as Skepta to abruptly being dropped by his record company. Shocka has been brutally honest about the consequences on his mental health and struggled when everything came crashing down. He says that ‘the reason why he thinks it all went downhill for him is because he never had a balance of struggle and success and when you don’t have that balance and it starts going downhill then you won’t know how to deal with that.’ He’s had a couple more recent breakdowns, but has recently come to the realisation that most people who suffer from mental health and depression are suffering from low self image and that is something he is trying to change. I am speaking to him today about why he wanted to open up about his mental health battle, his experience of being sectioned and how he has learnt to manage his manic depression.
