On today’s summer special we are joined by Professor Fiona McNicholas, a Consultant in child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Her clinical interests are eating disorders and I wanted to take the opportunity today to ask her about the differences between anorexia, bulimia and binge eating and particularly how this disorder impacts children and adolescence. Having suffered from an eating disorder which started when I was 12 years old, I’m always keen to learn more about how treatments are becoming more effective and the impact that early intervention can make. I was pleased to hear that the level of support needed for an eating disorder is now being recognised but I think one of the biggest takeaways from the conversation is that we shouldn’t ignore that parents or close friends watching their children suffer with these disorders may need to be supported too.
