Chris Magee on his yoga journey - moving from injury to awareness, movement to introspection
Chris Magee (@mageesy), head of yoga at Psycle London, is a teacher's teacher who runs trainings and retreats worldwide (in normal times), when he is not offering what is marketed to be the toughest yoga class in London, aptly named OMFG. The accomplished Irish yogi has had a surprising and compelling path. A keen rugby player in his teens, he then trained as an actor in London and was dutifully sent to yoga by his movement coach while in recovery from several injuries he'd previously suffered on the field. One thing led to another, more yoga and more injuries. He moved from what he referred to as 'ego-driven unawareness' to an entirely new path, one that revolutionised the way he trained himself and how he shared that with other people.Chris holds the highest available E-500RYT from Yoga Alliance and is trained in Hatha, Vinyasa, Budokon, Ashtanga, Rocket Yoga and Acro Yoga, with roughly 2000 hours of training to date.In this conversation, Chris candidly shares his wins and challenges around practice since his early start, his move from acting to training to yoga and how all three talents combined somehow into a 'perfect storm'. Anne and Chris discuss the difficulties that can be expected while teaching in a pandemic, what are the ways in for beginners away from a studio, and what it's like to hold space for all different types of students to find what they need out of the practice. Not only is Chris an incredibly experienced teacher with much to share, but he also knows how to make his story come to life - we can only imagine how fun this must be for the students in his yoga class. Find all links to Chris' website and other details below. Sri Ganesh Santhiram on being bold, data as guiding light and empowering teams to drive success on digital
In this episode of Out of the Clouds, Anne Muhlethaler speaks to Sri Ganesh Santhiram, a digital marketing and e-commerce leader with a passion for putting customer experience and message first. Ganesh shares his journey from being a football-loving kid growing up in Brighton to his MBA in Malaysia and how being at the forefront of data and insights offered him a way into digital and e-commerce. As someone focused on creating data-driven, consumer-centric strategies to drive digital growth, he goes over the challenges and opportunities for brands around digital transformation. Anne and Ganesh also discuss what they see as some of the roadblocks that hinder digital success for most businesses: from the roles people play in organisations, misalignment, a lack of empathy towards the client, poor creative messaging or lack of understanding of the digital environment at the leadership level. They also exchange and celebrate the brands and creatives that are able to translate or transcend the retail store experience to offer immersive online experiences. The two end on Ganesh's sporting passions, how football taught him to focus on a team's common goal and his steps towards mindful mornings. A bright and insightful conversation.***Show notes: You can find Ganesh on LinkedIn CricutArticle by Ganesh for Luxury Society And this one on Data as guiding light for brandsClubhouseSpark AR CPMThe Social Dilemma on NetflixVictorinoxChef Massimo Bottura on InstagramThe Cartier website The AkinFierce Conversations book by Susan Scott The Who, the A Method for hiring Patagonia Mr PorterRaphaOasis 'Wonderwall'Manchester United football teamBrighton & Hove Albion Football teamPremiere LeagueCreativity Inc the bookPatagonia, ArgentinaGary Vaynerchuck***If you enjoyed this episode, click subscribe for more, and consider writing a review of the show on Apple Podcasts, it helps people find us and also helps to secure future guests. Dr Andrea Wojnicki on skilled communication, word of mouth, and the importance of personal brand
In this episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Muhlethaler is joined by Dr Andrea Wojnicki, founder and chief talker of 'Talk About Talk', an online platform as well as a podcast. From early experiences in brand marketing at Kraft Foods, Andrea, a self-confessed life-long learner talks about how she got into academia and earned herself a Doctorate of Business Administration (Marketing) from Harvard Business School, where she focused her research on consumer psychology and the fascinating subject of 'word of mouth'. Since then, she has been keenly exploring why people talk.Over the course of the conversation, Andrea shares a lot of practical advice on interpersonal communications, and touches on how she supports business professionals and executives in becoming more skillful with their communication, which in turns supports their personal growth and career. We explore some of her favorite subjects, including personal branding, archetypes, and the three superpowers we all want to develop in our communication skills. Andrea is also a talented painter, so we veer off to discussing the importance of creative outlets and how she gets into a state of flow, sometimes even on Zoom. It was a joy to record this episode, so we hope you will find as much enjoyment in listening to it. ***Show notes: You can find Andrea at TalkAboutTalk.comFollow her on LinkedinOn Instagram @talkingabouttalk and on Twitter @dr_wojSign up to the Talk About Talk newsletter to get the FREE course '5 email hacks'Martha Stewart Case from HBSThe Pokemon Go HBS business case Coach Tara Mohr and her book 'Playing Big'Amy Cuddy's Ted Talk on how languages shapes who we areAkimbo's Podcast WorkshopProfessor Jerry Zaltman The Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation technique ArchetypesThe altMBAThe Tall Poppy Syndrome Andrea's teacher, Susan Fournier 1000 True Fans, an essay by Kevin Kelly Andrea's Painting website A Promised Land, by Barack Obama'Personal History, by Kathrine Graham - Pulitzer Prize winner 1998 (autobiography) ***If you enjoyed this episode, click subscribe for more, and consider writing a review of the show on Apple Podcasts, it helps people find us and also helps to secure future guests. Hanna Fiedler on making clothes vs fashion, the importance of fit, and how she gets her inspiration from sushi chefs
In this episode, the guest of Out of the Clouds is Hanna Fiedler (@hanna.fiedler): the creative force behind her eponymous London-based womenswear brand, an up-and-comer in the fashion industry, whos is launching her fourth collection this Spring. Hanna, originally from Bavaria, Germany, started her journey in fashion by learning to sew with her mother, then interning at 16 in the Thalia Theater in Hamburg where she fell in love with the art of tailoring and costume design. This led her to a three-year apprenticeship in tailoring at the Berlin Opera House, before taking her to the London College of Fashion where she honed her craft in pattern cutting. In this conversation, Hanna shares her love of building timeless pieces with character to enhance the wearer's visual personality, as well as why she loves to explore hidden volume, sustainable materials and practices, and why wants to see more transparency in the fashion industry in the future. Her passion for food and the inspiration she gets from sushi chefs were an exquisite surprise, informing the manly Japanese names of pieces in her new collection like Endo Trousers. A joyful, thoughtful and touching conversation with a young entrepreneur with bright vision. Martin Popplewell on being the real castaway, finding alternative routes and the state of journalism today
This week, host of Out of the Clouds Anne Muhlethaler is joined by journalist, media trainer and ex-broadcaster Martin Popplewell (@Martinpops). Anne had the occasion to work with Martin on a couple of projects, which landed her in the green room of the BBC Morning News a few years ago. However little did she know of his (very) early career in TV which landed him on a deserted island, on purpose it should be noted, and not on any show you may have heard of. They talk about his passion for journalism and politics, his experience of grilling PM David Cameron on gay rights and the state of the (mainstream) media today. Martin also is an experienced and savvy media trainer, he talks about why it's completely normal to have nerves before going live on TV and yes, we (civilians) should all get media trained if we are to engage with the mainstream media as it's often referred to today. A wide ranging, profound and fun conversation. Lama Hourani on emotional geography, the importance building bridges and becoming a cultural entrepreneur
Lama Hourani (@lamahourani and @lamahouranijewelry) is a Jordanian jewelry designer who grew up in the country's capital, Amman, with artistically-minded entrepreneurial parents who founded private art gallery Foresight 32, when she was a just girl. When a silversmith jeweler came asking for work at the gallery, during the Iraq war, her mother took him in and they turned their small gallery kitchen into a workshop and that is how Lama found her passion. Lama launched her line of silver jewelry in 2000. An artist and designer, Lama talks about her creative process, her studies and friendship with previous guest of the show Paolo Ferrarini, who taught her a class which marked her, about "emotional geography". She talks candidly about her challenges gaining an international reputation as a Jordanian brand and how important it is for her that young Arab men and women are able to see successful brands, like hers from the Middle East, making it big internationally. Named a Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum for her commitment in supporting women in Jordan since the early days of her company, Lama offers her views on building bridges between people and cultures and creating universal languages through her designs. The mother of gorgeous twins, Matteo and Dalila, aka Lamoncitos, offers generous insights into her journey in cultural entrepreneurship and, well, the difficulties of juggling growing an independent brand with the demands of motherhood. A beautiful conversation which hopefully will inspire another generation of talented, bright and socially impactful creatives. Enjoy! Meditation: Lovingkindness - Kindness as the water of humanity
Lovingkindness or Metta, is a practice which invites a genuine intention, first directed towards oneself, before turning to others and the whole world, to be healthy, at ease and safe from harm. Far from being a simple wish or a prayer, Metta doesn't change our situations yet it may change how we relate to ourselves and each other over time. This meditation awakens listening presence, first inquiring about state, then offering relaxation and ease through the body, tuning into the heart area, before then moving into breathing in and out, repeating lovingkindness phrases. Teacher Ruth King says in her book 'Mindful of Race':"Kindness is the water of humanity. Without water, we harden. Kindness is an attitude, an aspiration, and a practice."

Paolo Ferrarini on content curation, fashion's opportunity and getting closer to nature
This week, I am joined by my good friend, curator, journalist and teacher Paolo Ferrarini (@paolostyleops). Paolo started his career in trend forecasting before becoming a design journalist and teacher at several of Europe's most prestigious schools. He writes for the Cool Hunting and Italian design title Interni as well. We met a few years back in Milan and were lucky to have the opportunity to spend more time together during a couple of press trips (which I organised), back in the days when we could, you know, travel!Paolo indulged me first by telling me about his career, which as it turns out I didn't know so much about, his passion for great craftsmanship and photography, including a course in self-portraiture, pre-selfies. He offers bold thoughts on the future of fashion and how companies should create content out of love, making authenticity a company strategy, rather than merely a philosophy. Paolo, a podcaster himself, tells me about interviewing one of his idols Debbie Millman (the podcast is out this week) for Edit Naples, and his new talk project, the Human Difference talks. We finish on my favorite questions: What is your favorite word? "Incantevole" - enchanting in English - like the song by the band SubsonicaWhat brings you happiness? My family and the people on quick dial in my phone, that's what brings me the most joy.
