Solo Episode - This is a test
'If you are not happy with the way things are, don't just complain. Go make things how they should be.' Derek SiversThis episode marks the start of the second season of Out of the Clouds. Host Anne Mühlethaler returns with a solo episode, a podcast version of a piece she wrote recently. The topic is inspired by a book by Derek Sivers called 'Your Music and Your People' - a wonderful read - which she was gifted anonymously earlier this year. One of the short stories or blog posts, called This is a Test, feels like an invitation to write and explore the value of testing things. Not taking them too seriously. Sivers calls it the 'let's see what happens approach'. Anne shares how taking small steps (baby steps, or even turtle steps) towards bigger goals feels so much more achievable when we consider the step to be a test. Even turtle steps can take us far, which she later illustrates with a couple of personal stories - one involving an actual turtle! Later on, she explores the 'what next', after all the baby steps, and the tests when the inner critic shows up. Happy listening!***Show notes:Derek Sivers - https://sive.rs/His book, Your Music and Your People - https://sive.rs/mThe post Get Personal - https://sive.rs/gpersThe post Captain T - https://sive.rs/captAnne's post about testing and the value of experimentation - https://avm.consulting/looking-forward/about-hair-adventures-experimentation-and-communicationThe post This is Only a Test - https://sive.rs/tvtestCoach Martha Beck - https://marthabeck.com/The post Repeatedly Follow Up to Show You Care - https://sive.rs/3inAnne Lamott talking to Tim Ferriss about the Inner Critic - https://tim.blog/2021/07/09/anne-lamott/***If you enjoyed this episode, click subscribe for more, and consider writing a review of the show on Apple Podcasts, it helps people find us and also helps to secure future guests. Nadine Kelly on yoga and mental health, reclaiming her creativity and serving wise women
In this new episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Muhlethaler interviews Nadine Kelly (https://www.instagram.com/yogimdnet/?hl=en), a retired pathologist, experienced yoga instructor, American Council of Exercise certified Health Coach and Senior Exercise Specialist. She is also the founder of YOGI M.D. and host of the YOGI M.D. Podcast.Anne and Nadine are Akimbo alumni, they met in 2020 on the Podcasting Fellowship, an online course for budding podcasters hosted by Seth Godin and Alex di Palma. In this conversation, Nadine candidly reveals her journey leaving her medical career due to depression to finding her path as a yoga teacher, and later on as a health coach. Anne and Nadine discuss the link between yoga and mental wellness, and how Nadine's calling to teach seniors who she warmly refers to as her ‘wise women’. They talk about their learnings from coaching, particularly around limiting beliefs, and the value in Nadine’s motto: no strain, no gain. The two of them found tremendous value in Seth Godin’s Akimbo workshops, which Nadine calls ‘the classroom she always wished she'd had’ and touch on the importance of good teachers. Especially good music teachers: Nadine is a keen drummer, while Anne is a pianist and vocalist.Nadine’s love of podcasting contagious, she is dedicated to her audience and to the intimacy of the medium: 'When I record my podcast episodes, when I sit with my guests, the feeling I want to have is we're nerding out in my living room'. Nerding out on yoga, fitness, health and wellness, like the six dimensions of well-being. A bright conversation! Solo Episode - Telling the WE story
In this solo episode, host Anne Muhlethaler was inspired by the fact that Geneva, her hometown where she currently resides, felt like the centre of the world as the city hosted Presidents Biden and Putin for the US/Russia summit, essentially happening a stone's throw away from her home. The conversations picked up in the press prompted her to explore relationships as systems, how feedback offers about the person giving it, as well as our interconnectedness and what life can look like, when we embrace the other as one of us and shift from telling the I story to the story of WE. She closes on this quote from Sylvia Boorstein “Ultimately it’s not the stories that determine our choices, but the stories we continue to choose.” ***Select links from the episode: Full written post - The WE story - https://avm.consulting/looking-forward/the-we-storyThanks for the Feedback - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18114120-thanks-for-the-feedbackThe Art of Possibility, by Roz and Benjamin Zander - https://www.benjaminzander.org/about/the-art-of-possibility/The Parable of the Prickly Porcupine - https://cadconfessional.com/2018/09/20/139-parable-of-the-prickly-porcupine/Navigating conflict with a wise heart, by Tara Brach - https://www.tarabrach.com/navigating-conflict-part1/ *** If you enjoyed this episode, click subscribe for more, and consider writing a review of the show on the podcast platform of your choice. Solo Episode - a Change in Leadership Style
In this second solo episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Muhlethaler shares thoughts after writing a post for AVM Consulting. The topic explored is collaboration, or rather the importance of Collaborative Leadership vs the Hero Leadership, the importance of leaning into the wisdom at the meeting table and the real beauty or magic that can be found in the meeting rooms when engaging with everyone present. Anne confesses she is leaning towards change, though she still partially identifies with the old leadership model, while thinking about how to better collaborate to pave the way for a better, more inclusive and successful future - whether at work or in the wider world. ❇ It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit. – Harry Truman❇ None of us, including me, ever do great things. Todd Lynn on fashion as an ideas laboratory and why everyone wants to be a rockstar
In this new episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Muhlethaler interviews Canadian ready-to-wear designer Todd Lynn (@toddlynnlondon).Anne and Todd have known each other since 2000, whilst Anne was starting out at Christian Louboutin in London, and Todd was designing at Roland Mouret. They became close friends over the years and worked together closely, especially after Todd launched his eponymous brand in 2006.Todd is considered rock and roll’s best-kept secret. His clients include U2, The Rolling Stones, Beyonce, The Savages, Lady Gaga, Courtney Love, Janet Jackson and P.J. Harvey. His collection embodies the effortless, dark and beautiful rock and roll cool that his music industry heavy hitters have long appreciated, a hybrid fusion of perfect tailoring and casual deconstruction. The two discuss the joy and the challenges of having your own brand, the future of sustainability, and Todd’s thoughtful opinions around fashion as an ideas system. They touch on Todd's many incredible musical collaborations as he has dressed many a rock star and reflect upon both the glamour and hard work involved, especially when going on tour.Todd also offers his mindfulness rituals, which more recently evolved to include baking cakes. Baking has allowed Todd to “connect to a process”, which is somewhat similar to his meticulous collection development process.Todd then shares thoughts on teaching BA Students at Kingston University, the best advice he ever received from his teacher, the much-missed Louise Wilson, and finishes on the many books stacked up by his bedside. Solo Episode: the one where I talk about my favourite word and Ikigai
In this episode, the first of its kind, host of Out of the Clouds Anne Muhlethaler introduces a solo episode. Unlike the interviews with her varied guests, this is a scripted show, an audio version of the blog post she publishes weekly on her other platform, AVM Consulting (avm.consulting). Called Looking Forward, the blog is a jumping-off point where Anne explores business, the future of work, and like Out of the Clouds, applying a lens of mindfulness. In this show, her exploration is at the crossroads of two questions she asks every guest on the podcast: what is your favourite word? and what brings you happiness? In a moment of procrastination of sorts, she went back to listen to the interview with yoga teacher Chris Magee, whose answer to the final question touched on the Japanese concept of Ikigai. The interview led Anne to a rediscovery of her favourite word - harmony - before exploring musical metaphors and the wonderful leadership advice from conductor Ted Speaker and author Benjamin Zander. April Davila on mindful writing, right view and the importance of consistency
In this new episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Muhlethaler interviews novelist and mindfulness teacher April Davila (@aprildavila). Anne and April got to know each other thanks to their two-year certification training course, or MMTCP, which they completed earlier this year, meeting over Zoom during the closing retreat hosted by their teachers Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield. April, a fourth generation Californian shares her journey from scientist to professional writer, to novelist. She offers insights about both her writing process as well as what it was like publishing her first novel, '142 Ostriches', and recounts the wonderful story of how she found her agent - plus the joys and challenges of launching a book in a pandemic. April started offering mindful writing sessions and workshops over the past year and talks about how this turned into a very meaningful project called 'A Very Important Meeting'. The two discuss the surprising benefits of meditation practice to support creativity - something Anne was delighted to discover after she participated in April's last workshop. They go on to discuss how mindfulness concepts like 'right view' help the editing process when writing, and April shares tips and resources for writers, before sharing her current favorite reads. Keris Marsden on naturopathy, self care and following her gut
In this episode of Out of the Clouds, Anne Muhlethaler interviews Keris Masden (@fitterfood), in a first of what may be several interviews with the highly qualified naturopathic nutritional therapist, trainer and lecturer at the College of Naturopathic Medicine. Keris, with her partner Matt Whitmore, runs Fitter Food: a comprehensive platform offering good food, optimal health and tools to get fit and active, and leading long and happy lives.Anne invites Keris to share first the why behind her path into personal training, and then into naturopathy. A very personal journey indeed, in large part motivated by a loved one's cancer diagnosis and a chance encounter with a naturopath at an event. Anne and Keris also share their personal experiences in and around burnout, which leads them to discuss the function of breath in gut health and the importance of finding ways to release the stress cycle in our modern (and currently pandemic) environment. Keris then explains how she first got interested in the Paleo diet, how she thinks it can be adapted and how it supports a healthier lifestyle. Herself a keen cook (and a budding chocolatier), she started creating deliciously nutritious recipes for her clients, which then turned into her first book, 'The Paleo Primer'. She kindly credits her dog Hamish, a Bavarian mountain hound, as her best personal trainer and advisor, who is also a paleo convert. The two finish as always discussing mindfulness tips, the importance of community, favourite books (The Salt Path by Raynor Winn), the best advice Keris received from a friend (watch your gut!) and what brings her happiness. A really wonderful, personal and powerful conversation. Nina Runsdorf on being true to herself and always searching for treasures
In this episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Muhlethaler interviews the highly creative fine jeweler Nina Runsdorf. The two know each other well, having first been introduced by a mutual friend in 2011, and are currently working together on developing Nina's business. The super chic designer, who has been at the head of her eponymous brand for a little over 15 years, talks first about her roots in family and design. She has essentially been making jewellery throughout her life, first starting at her parent's upstate farm in New York age 11, then in college with a friend, before launching Niana, a small brand with her sister Ann, with the mild support of their grandmother and the rest of the family. After a few years working in retail, then as accessories director and then fashion director, Nina landed in jewelry again, this time in the diamond business. One thing led to another and her own brand was born. In this interview, the fiercely passionate New York native extols the virtues of being true to herself, how lucky she was to be taught by her mother about the importance of searching for treasures in unlikely places and why her jewellery is never too precious to wear - to be worn with a white t-shirt and jeans or with a ballgown. Nina's vibrant and artistic approach extends to her relationship to her clients and her atelier on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. She knows what her clients want, because, as she explains, she is her own client!Nina also candidly shares about the challenge of losing her husband and the support she got from friends and family, in bringing up her two daughters Alexa and Kate, while running a brand-new business. Anne and Nina end up as always on Out of the Clouds, discussing what brings happiness. A moving, light and wide-ranging conversation. *** Show notes: Find Nina at Ninarunsdorf.comor on Instagram @NinaRunsdorfJewelryOr Facebook @NinaRunsdorfNina Runsdorf signature Flip Ring Ralph Lauren RhinelanderMickey DrexlerStanley Korshak in Dallas Sliced DiamondsNina Runsdorf Phoenix Collection of Slice Diamonds with enamel Tucson Gem showCouture Jewelry Show in Las VegasNina's article in WWD about pioneering Sliced diamonds and coloured sliceNet-a-porter.comMatchesfashion.comJust One Eye in Los AngelesSerenellaNina Runsdorf on collecting in the Financial TimesNina's closet shot by the CoveteurBreguet, Swiss watches Sarah HughesNina's interview in Forbes about travelNina Runsdorf All That Is CollectionSalvatore Ferragamo, the biography The Cartier book ***If you enjoyed this episode, click subscribe for more, and consider writing a review of the show on Apple Podcasts, it helps people find us and also helps to secure future guests.
