Julie Granger on passion, teaching, and making the benefits of ballet available to all
In this episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Muhlethaler interviews celebrity fitness trainer and former ballerina Julie Granger. Anne came across Julie via an online recommendation and was immediately struck not only by the instructor’s passion for teaching and the effectiveness of her classes (particularly Brooklyn Barre), but also by the combination of her warmth and dry sense of humour. In this interview, they dig into Julie’s journey from the outskirts of Paris to the Boston Ballet, why she left her ballerina career behind, and how she decided to pursue new callings, including yoga, fitness and entrepreneurship. Currently based between Paris and Lisbon, Julie explains how she is ‘three-quarters teacher’, and why she is not teaching by default but as a choice since it’s something she truly loves. Having opened her first studio the week before the first COVID lockdown in 2020, the ex-ballerina opens up on the difficulties she faced then and how grateful she is to have been able to continue to lead her community of students (her ‘Squad,’ as she calls them) virtually. Anne and Julie discuss the competitive culture of celebrity trainers in New York and the benefits of discipline and passion. Julie also shares how she wants to offer her students not just the benefits of a toned and energised body but for them to have a great time while engaging with fitness, as well as how she hopes to make the benefits of ballet available to all. Finally, Julie covers how she’s learned to be kinder to herself, as we often are our own harshest critics, and why kindness is what matters most. A passionate, wise, and spirited interview. Cameron Silver on circular fashion, the theatre of retail and vulnerability
In this episode, Anne Muhlethaler, host of Out of the Clouds, interviews Cameron Silver. Known as ‘the impresario of vintage fashion’, Silver - who pursued acting in his teens - is a talented retailer, storyteller, and an all-round entertaining guest. In their interview, he tells Anne about how he landed working in retail while pursuing acting and singing roles, and how he started building a shop in his mother’s living room, after discovering a passion for thrifting while touring around the US. Later, he founded the now famous vintage couture boutique Decades Inc. in LA, where he started to dress celebrities and stylish clients for red carpet and other assorted events. Cameron’s passion for the history of fashion is linked to the fact that he believes that ‘fashion is a barometer for how we live, have lived and will live.’ Himself a daring dresser, he tells Anne about style, self-expression and how much he enjoys mentoring emerging designers and consulting for brands. The two end on discussing the difficult times Cameron went through when, in the middle of the pandemic, he found himself caring for his ailing father, Jack B Silver, who passed away later in 2020. Cameron shares with both great vulnerability and kindness and in the middle of that, manages to impart some wonderful wisdom. A beautiful, touching and very funny interview. Rebekah Brown on the M word, femtech funding and reframing midlife as a superpower
Rebekah Brown is the founder and chief guinea pig of MPowder, the world’s first plant-based supplement powder range crafted to target the three distinct biochemical stages of the menopause. Rebekah's personal struggle was the starting point for this entrepreneurial adventure, as she started to suffer in her early forties from varied symptoms that neither she or her doctor could make sense of. As a researcher and planner in the creative industries, she threw herself into a quest which led her to experiment with functional foods, and then into creating her own nutritional supplement, a powder she first ground herself in her own family kitchen - a time she says other family members would rather forget. She likes to say that MPowder is on a mission to reframe midlife as a superpower. Launched in September 2020, the brand went to market in the UK with their first supplement, called Peri-Boost, a product born from curiosity, co-creation and community. In this personal and in-depth interview, Rebekah talks through her experience with perimenopause, how she launched in the middle of the pandemic, her funding experience - both as a woman founder and in the femtech space - and how she inadvertently became a spokesperson for menopause. She talks to Anne about how her team is co-creating the products not only with specialist doctors and nutritionists but with the support or feedback of their dedicated community. The two discuss the biochemical aspects of this life transition, the emotional journey women go through, before touching on how yoga, meditation and movement have helped Rebekah on her mindful journey through this life cycle.A wonderful, funny and touching interview. Yancey Strickler on Bento and post-individualism, self-interest and future us
Yancey Strickler (@ystrickler) is an entrepreneur and writer, co-founder of Kickstarter, The Creative Independent, and the author of This Could Be our Future, A Manifesto for a More Generous World. He’s a Distinguished Fellow at the Drucker Institute, one of Fast Company’s Most Creative People, and an angel investor in startups, including Hopin, Mati, Organise, Realtime, Supercritical, System, and Wren.Host Anne Mühlethaler met Yancey over Zoom, with 50 or so others, curious after hearing him speak of his Bentoism project on the James Altucher show in Spring 2020. Having gotten to know each other over the past few months via the Bento Society, Anne starts the conversation by asking Yancey about his upbringing in rural Virginia, his passion for reading, writing and the early days of his career as a music critic in New York City. Yancey talks Anne through the inception of Kickstarter and shares what he learnt about manifesting ideas during the years he spent supporting thousands of creative projects launched on the crowdfunding platform. He explains how he came up with the Bento (Beyond Near Term Orientation), a tool he designed while he was in the process of writing his book. After pondering on the meaning of value and the Self, Yancey was in need of a metaphor as he explored how to balance decision making between near and long-term, and going beyond the ‘now me’ of the present self’s needs. The two also chat about data, reputation and identity in the digital age, tribes,post-individualism and self-interest. They finish the discussion on whether the Bento can be helpful in building a better future for the planet, or as per Yancey’s original idea, how it could lead us on an intentional path to a better 2050. A fascinating and fun conversation, happy listening!***Selected Links from the episode You can find Yancey @Ystrickler on Twitter or via his website Ystrickler.comThe Creative Independent - https://thecreativeindependent.com/Bentoism & The Bento Society - https://bentoism.org/joinYancey interviewed on the James Altucher's Podcast - https://omny.fm/shows/the-james-altucher-show/589-yancey-stricklerThe Trouser Press Record Guide - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/899268.The_Trouser_Press_Record_GuideKickstarter's Stats page - https://www.kickstarter.com/help/statsAdam Smith - Wealth of Nations - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wealth_of_NationsJerry Colonna Reboot - https://www.reboot.io/podcast/Don Cherry - Relativity Suite 2 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relativity_SuiteThe Weirdest People in the World - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_WEIRDest_People_in_the_WorldPriya Parker - The Art of Gathering - https://www.priyaparker.com/thebookPeter Hook - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_HookJoy Division - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joy_DivisionOur Band Could Be Your Life - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Band_Could_Be_Your_LifeNot for Bread Alone - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Not_by_Bread_Alone ***If you enjoyed this episode, click subscribe for more, and consider writing a review of the show on Apple Podcasts, it helps people find us and also helps to secure future guests. Solo Episode - On swimming, resources and finding flow
In this solo episode, host Anne Muhlethaler (@annvi) explains how she reconnected with her childhood love of swimming while away on a mountain retreat for a few days. Surprisingly, through a few changes she'd recently made, this practice turned into a peak experience. This got her thinking, mid-stroke (breaststroke that is), and turned into a reflection on the feeling of ‘meh’ (aka languishing), and how to find joy (and flow) in the small things. With a clear nod (and thanks) to Prof. Adam Grant, whose recent TED Talk in Monterey provided a wonderful backdrop to examine how we can bring play, and potentially flow, into our lives. With or without a swim.*** Selected links from the episode: The Art of Swimming - https://www.artofswimming.com/Adam Grant's TED Monterey Talk on how to stop languishing and start finding flow - https://www.ted.com/talks/adam_grant_how_to_stop_languishing_and_start_finding_flow?language=enAdam Grant's New York Times article on languishing - https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/19/well/mind/covid-mental-health-languishing.html*** If you enjoyed this episode, click subscribe for more, and consider writing a review of the show on Apple Podcasts, it helps people find us and also helps to secure future guests. Dr Tim Lomas on finding happiness through untranslatable words, and men, meditation, and mental health
Dr Tim Lomas (@drtimlomas) is one of Europe's leading experts on positive psychology and the programme leader at the University of East London's MSc in Applied Positive Psychology (one of Europe’s most highly respected post-graduate courses). He has written for the Guardian, the Times, Psychology Today and has published numerous academic papers in high-profile journals, including Psychology, Public Policy and Law, Mindfulness, Psychology and Health and the Journal of Happiness Studies. His first book, The Positive Power of Negative Emotions, was published in 2016.In this episode Dr. Tim Lomas discusses how his formative experiences travelling around China and Tibet led him into his specialism in meditation and Buddhism. He also reveals his other passion - performing as part of a Ska band, which eventually had to give way to his PHd on men, meditation and mental health. Tim went on to undertake research into untranslatable words that he describes as “portals into another landscape”. Words that led him to create his Happiness Dictionary, a compilation of words from all over the world that have no direct translation in other languages. He discovers that concepts within psychology are western-centric, and therefore incomplete due to English being the dominant language, where it’s not always to give exact equivalents to ideas from other languages. This leads to the idea that cultures that don’t have words or concepts for certain feelings or emotions mean their knowledge of them can be incomplete. Therefore, there is huge potential to develop the world of psychology outside of the English language. Also covered by Anne and Tim is the idea that the more language we have at our disposal to convey experiences or emotions, the more conducive it is to improved wellbeing and behaviour. Tim suggests that we need to strike a balance in many areas of our lives; from work-life balance to emotions and exercise. From this, harmony and integrity can be reached in our lives if a balance can be achieved within all of these areas as a whole. *** Selected Links from Episode: Watch Dr Tim Lomas at TEDxZurich: https://www.ted.com/talks/tim_lomas_expanding_our_experiential_horizons_through_untranslatable_wordsYou can also find Dr. Tim Lomas at: Dr. Tim Lomas’ Website - https://www.drtimlomas.com/Dr. Tim Lomas on Twitter - https://twitter.com/drtimlomas?lang=enDr. Tim Lomas on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/drtimlomas/?originalSubdomain=ukRead Dr. Tim Lomas’ Books - https://www.drtimlomas.com/booksRead Dr. Tim Lomas’ Papers - https://www.drtimlomas.com/papersFind Tim Lomas’ Happiness Dictionary on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/happywordsproject/?hl=enDiscover Tim’s Positive Lexicography, an interactive hub - https://hifisamurai.github.io/lexicography/Discover the Pema Chödrön - https://pemachodronfoundation.org/Read Lisa Feldman Barrett’s Book – How Emotions Are Made - https://lisafeldmanbarrett.com/books/how-emotions-are-made/Read Emotional Intelligence by The Dalai Lama and Paul Ekman - https://tinyurl.com/r59y75ptThe global Wellbeing Initiative - https://www.globalwellbeinginitiative.org/READ John Koenig’s - The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows - https://tinyurl.com/28nxa8csYancey Strickler & The Bento Society - https://www.ystrickler.com/Arvo Pärt- Spiegel im Spiegel - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJ6Mzvh3XCcThe Kermode and Mayo Film Review Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/kermode-and-mayos-film-review/id73802698Sam Harris’ Waking Up App - https://wakingup.com/ *** If you enjoyed this episode, click subscribe for more, and consider writing a review of the show on Apple Podcasts, it helps people find us and also helps to secure future guests. Andrew Barry on transformational online courses, learning from each other and seeking joy
'Your customers will tell you what they want your product to be. Listening to what the customer wants is half the battle and the key to everything you do.' Andrew Barry Andrew Barry (@bazzaruto) is 'the course guy', an online teacher's teacher and founder of Curious Lion Learning. If a single slogan could describe Andrew, it would be 'The more you learn, the better it gets', a line which he credits to a sporting TV network he used to watch while growing up, a self-confessed sports fanatic, in Cape Town, South Africa. With a start at KPMG as a chartered accountant, Andrew veered off into teaching, having found his niche developing training for corporate companies. His vision is sharp: better learning experiences enhance both brand and culture, and he delights in creating the right digital or hybrid products to deliver just that for his clients. His method? Taking the time to ask in depth questions and listening to what the customer wants. In this interview, Andrew digs deep into the 8 component parts of TOC's (Transformational Online Courses), a term coined after analysing the process which had led him to several of his own personal transformations.Far from the 'sage on the stage', he explains how we learn better from each other, the importance of establishing trust and credibility, and being student-centered. Host Anne Mühlethaler (a course nerd herself) also shares her best and worst online workshop stories, and asks Andrew about how to promote a digital course (when you hate promoting yourself), tech platforms (important or not?) and opportunities for early movers in the adult digital learning space. For anyone trying to understand online learning, those interested in signing up for a course or perhaps even developing their own, this rich interview will not only leave you knowledgeable on the subject, but perhaps even yearning to learn something new. Happy listening!***Selected links from episode: Connect with Andrew on Twitter @Bazzaruto - https://twitter.com/Bazzaruto or @CuriousLionInc https://twitter.com/CuriousLionIncOn IG @Bazzaruto - https://www.instagram.com/bazzaruto/On Youtube @Andrew Barry Teaches - https://www.youtube.com/c/Andrew%20BarryTeachesor discover more on Curious Lion Learning - https://curiouslionlearning.com/Andrew's $5 email course: https://curious-lion.ck.page/products/course-creator-email-courseHis free ebook to create the perfect online course - https://curiouslionlearning.com/ebook/Listen to the Curious Lion podcast - https://curiouslionlearning.com/podcast/***Anne's interview with Andrew on his podcast - How did you Learn That MOOCs - the meaning - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massive_open_online_courseInterview with Nadine Kelly Akimbo workshops - https://akimbo.com/Write of Passage course - https://writeofpassage.school/The altMBA - https://altmba.com/Robbie Crabtree Performative Speaking - https://www.robbiecrabtree.com/Ali Abdaal Part Time Youtuber Academy - https://academy.aliabdaal.com/Ish Baid, CEO of Virtually - https://twitter.com/IshBaidVirtually - https://www.tryvirtually.com/Seymour Papert - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seymour_PapertJean Piaget - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seymour_PapertAndrew's Essays - https://curiouslionlearning.com/perfect-sales-offer-online-course/Jim Collins 'Beyond Entrepreneurship 2.0' - https://www.jimcollins.com/books/BE2.htmlHasan Kubba 'The Unfair Advantage' - https://www.amazon.com/Unfair-Advantage-Startup-Success-Starts/dp/1788163311Robert Moses 'The Power Broker' - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1111.The_Power_BrokerThe song It's Alright, Ma - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JBNWkCsmqAYBob Marley's 'Jammin' - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1uM5exCBWzkShaka Zulu - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaka ***If you enjoyed this episode, click subscribe for more, and consider writing a review of the show on Apple Podcasts, it helps people find us and also helps to secure future guests.
