Tess Privett on faith, Japa meditation and finding joy while chopping an onion
In this episode, host Anne Muhlethaler interviews Tess Privett (@lotuspocus_milano): Tess is a yoga teacher, owner of Lotus Pocus studio in the center of Milan, Italy, who Anne encountered virtually while the two were studying how to launch their podcasts with the help of Seth Godin's Akimbo "Podcast Fellowship". This marks their first time "meeting" over Zoom, despite the fact they had spent a good couple of months that same spring reading and hearing about each other's projects come to life. Tess and Anne share a deep interest in yoga and meditation. In this interview, they discuss Tess' experience in the four paths of yoga (helpful for anyone new to the practice), including the path that initially interested her the least, the Bhakti or devotional path. She then offers insights on the practical effects of doing one-pointed yogic meditation, like Japa, which she teaches, and shares a personal story about the joy one can feel while chopping an onion!Tess has a deep love of yoga philosophy and she talks about her dharma and how she strives to make the canonical texts practical for everyday, which is the underlying purpose of her podcast, Yoggi(Yoga Oggi = yoga today). If you like yoga, and perhaps philosophy, and speak Italian, jump on the link below to discover. A beautiful, funny and inspiring conversation. Dapper Lou on style, spirituality and cultural storytelling
Lougé Delcy is an artist and entrepreneur, most commonly known as photographer and influencer under the name Dapper Lou (@dapperlou). We got to know each other on a couple of trips to the South of Italy, where he had been commissioned to capture effortless men's style in the height of the summer heat. In this interview, we discuss his early love for fashion, his street style debut and the close relationship and support he gets from his family, in particular his father, Jean. As the conversation progresses, I indulged in asking him about his fabulous shoot with Lauryn Hill, as well as an important trip to Kenya which marked a big transition in his life as an artist, or cultural storyteller. Lou shares his passion about documenting the beauty and joy in life, whether in Brooklyn, Cuba or Morocco. A joy to listen to, as much as to discover. Links to his work below. Rajesh Ramani on emotional resilience and self awareness or sharpening the axe
In this conversation, Rajesh Ramani (on LinkedIn) kindly relates his journey from South India to becoming a spiritual teacher as well as a life transformation coach based in the world renowned Kamalaya Wellness Centre in Southern Thailand. I ask him about the importance of Self Awareness and he tells me a story about a wood cutter, which leads us to discussing the pragmatic need for us to know who we are and how we understand the world. He then brings up some of the mind's restless movements and how that can be the focus of meditation. We touch on how he takes everything into account to support the people who come to him, from mental, emotional and spiritual part of their journey and he offers advice to business executives in this time of great challenge, cueing them to put an emphasis on human connections. "Stay away from negativity" he advises, "and invest in relationships." We then move on to talk about how to deal with grief with the backdrop of COVID-19 and how to release guilt, anger, and other associated emotions. His advice: "Let yourself grieve!"Rajesh also goes over the new workshops he will lead online and off line, with the Self Leadership Days , the next one being focused on Emotional Resilience, a skill we probably all need to cultivate in these times. We bring up goddesses, Kali in particular, then Carl Sagan “The Pale Blue Dot” and I finish our chat with three questions: What are you reading right now? The Bagavad GitaThe 50 greatest short storiesI know you are partial to Netflix occasionally, what are you watching at the moment? NetflixKim’s Convenience StoreAnd any final words to share with our listeners? You'll have to listen to the episode to discover this answer. Good is the New Cool with Eva Geraldine
Today I talk to Eva Geraldine Fontanelli. We begin by discussing how Eva is coping with the lockdow then tells me about her meditation practice. She studies a form of Japanese Buddhist meditation that she discovered in her 20’s. While meditating, she recites the mantra, “nam myoho renge kyo” which she roughly translates as ‘I believe in the law of cause and effect.’ Through her meditation, she finds answers to questions from within herself and declares the practice to also have a practical aspect to the results outside herself.I was curious to ask Eva about her start in the fashion industry and discover what brought her to a cover shoot with Gilles Bensimon for Elle US on the streets of NYC, the moment she discovered that being a fashion stylist could be (or would be) her career. Eva tells me about her journey from unpaid intern to junior editor and how her determination and being the only Spanish speaker in the fashion department really worked to her advantage. She also believes in her own unique style and sense of humor and explains how authenticity and honesty is at the core of how she works.I then ask Eva where her interest in sustainability began and we discuss the Social Sustainable program, acting as a mentor for brands like the beautiful Orenda Tribe and the UN Ethical Fashion Initiative headed by Simone Cipriani. She then tells all about Goooders, the platform she created to sell and to promote sustainable brands, like one of her favourites Parafina, and explains the meaning of the motto: “When you do good, you look good!”I also ask Eva about conscious travel post-COVID-19. She is optimistic and tells me of an Italian proverb: "Non tutto il male vien per nuocere" which she translates as ‘not all bad things come to damage you.’ She is operating from a place of gratitude and sees the opportunities that this global event provides us. I conclude the podcast by asking Eva these questions:1) What is your favorite word?"Grazie. Merci. Thank you. So, basically it's one of my secrets, because I have always been thankful and I try to be thankful all the time. Something really that keeps me happy. So, I'm really grateful for that time. So it's one of the word I say most. Grazie, grazie, grazie, to people in the street to the vendors, friends. You know, a word I really, really love."2) What are you not good at?“Laundry. Unless you like tie & dye style, I would avoid laundry”3) What brings you happiness?“I have a little gratitude journal where sometimes I force myself to write at least 10 things I'm grateful for every day.So sometimes I come up sometimes with superficial things like my coffee but these days, I'm really, really thankful for my body and my health.“You can find out more about Eva here: InstagramYou can find more about Goooders here: Goooders and on their Instagram Select Links from Eva on both Buddhism and sustainability: Eva's zen buddhist community is SGI.Eva’s book recommendations for meditation practiceAnd another suggestion for introduction to buddhismEva’s recommendations for sustainability resources:To read:This is a good guideHarvard MagazineMission MagazineTo listen to:The Minimalists PodcastThe Green Divas podcastTo follow: Bandana TewariClare Presshttps://ethicalfashioninitiative.org_______________________________If you enjoyed this episode, click subscribe for more, and if you are so enclined, rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts. For show notes and transcripts, please visit Out Of The Clouds on Simplecast.
