#60 - The voice in our head and how to harness it with Ethan Kross
How many times has the voice in your head led you down a rabbit hole of negative self talk?"I’m not good enough"“I’m not smart enough”"I can't do this""I’ll fail"“I’m fat"“I hate my body”I've definitely had times where I've doubted myself, times when the negative voices have crept in and taken over my thoughts. These silent conversations are so powerful. They affect our mood, how we feel about ourselves, they can stop us from taking action and they can affect our health. One of my favourite books on how to harness these inner voices is called Chatter, written by acclaimed psychologist Ethan Cross. I loved it so much I thought I'd get him on the show to talk more about these inner voices and share some of the tools you can use to harness them so you can be happier, healthier and more productive.More specifically we discussed:➡️What is “Chatter”?➡️Managing “Chatter”➡️Rituals to manage those voices➡️Success and mindset➡️Using language to change your mindset➡️How it takes practice to overcome that negative self-talk➡️Controlling a thought vs dealing with thoughts that pop up in your head➡️And more!Happy listening I hope you find this podcast helpful and don't forget to take a screenshot of the episode and share it on Instagram stories and tag me at @kittyblomfield. #57 - Why it matters what you put on your skin with Emma Sgourakis
Emma and I have known each other and worked together for years now. I met her around the same time I met my partner, Craig.A few years ago I messaged Emma saying I was thinking about doing skincare (we’d had so many discussions about how there just weren’t any good brands or lotions without nasties or PUFA's in them). Emma asked me if I wanted a business partner and the rest is history. It's been a long road with the skincare. We've been at it for nearly two years now!! We ended up changing formulators in the end so we could get the product just right. It was worth the wait because we have the final samples and it should be coming out in the next few months. We’re on the homestretch now, and we are so excited to release these products (finally!!). We have also started formulating makeup. A foundation, lip/cheek tint and bonzer. They will be free from iron oxide, silicones, PUFA, titanium dioxide, aluminium and mineral oil...the first of their kind in the market. With that on the horizon, Emma and I decided to sit down and discuss skincare. We talk about:➡️What you need to know about the skin➡️What happens when you place these chemicals/endocrine disruptors on your skin➡️What happens when you put PUFA's on your skin➡️Why many of the skin products labelled “anti-aging” are doing the complete opposite➡️How the skin looks after itself and skincare should be about supporting it➡️What products we use around the house and on our skin currentlyHappy listening I hope you find this podcast helpful and don't forget to take a screenshot of the episode and share it on Instagram stories and tag me at @kittyblomfield. #56 - Dissolve-it-all with Matt Blackburn
If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll know Matt. We just had a bit of a catch up. He’s recently got engaged, bought a place on the lake - it’s completely off the grid! He’s been busy, but it was so nice to sit down and chat about his Mitolife product, Dissolve-it-all.I started taking Dissolve-it-all after I got my breast implants taken out in December 2020 to help with the scarring. To be honest I was a bit sceptical but the results were amazing, I've had a noticeable reduction in my scars. If you go to his website you can also read one of the 100s of amazing reviews of this product and not just for scar tissue people have reported improvements in fibrotic breast tissue, arthritis, skin tags, achy joints, digestive issues, fibroids and more. When you’re younger, everything just heals so fast. But you might notice that with age, scars tend to stick around and become more of a permanent thing. Matt is a firm believer that they don’t have to! So I thought I'd get Matt on to talk more about systemic enzymes. So, if you’re curious, give this a listen. We chat about:✔How Dissolve-it-all works✔The two main active ingredients✔The different types of enzymes✔Fibrosis✔What else Dissolve-it-all is good for✔DetoxificationAnd more!Happy listening I hope you find this podcast helpful and don't forget to take a screenshot of the episode and share it on Instagram stories and tag me at @kittyblomfield. #55 - Pro-Metabolic Eating for Men with Craig McDonald and Travis Harris
So I know I talk about women a lot...because I am one 🤣 and our program is specifically for women.I remember when I first met Craig, at the same time I met my now business partner Emma Sgourakis. I was like a rat up a drain pipe 🤣 and quickly converted Craig to pro-metabolic eating. In fact when Craig and I opened our gym in 2015 we worked with both men and women for 3 years. Craig has a handful or male clients he works with now (husbands of the women in the Winatlife program, he would work with more but he just doesn't have the time). So many women in our programs ask me about what their husband should be doing or what men can do to eat and train pro-metabolically. I also hear from a lot of women how their husbands aren’t as supportive or understanding about this new way of eating. I get that as they probably think oh here we go again another diet 🤣 I wonder how long this will last. So, we thought it would be a good idea to sit down and chat about it. Travis is another guy in the pro-metabolic community and most of you know Craig, Coach Sausage (as he's fondly called in our program 🤣) and the other half of WinAtLife. In this episode, we discuss:➡️Is fasting good for men?➡️Men’s hormones➡️Where men might be going wrong with their nutrition and training➡️What causes low libido in men➡️What foods men can eat to improve and restore their metabolism➡️What metabolic markers men should be tracking➡️What Craig and Travis diets look like➡️Strength training and exercise for men➡️How to deal with pushback from your husband or partnerHappy listening I hope you find this podcast helpful and don't forget to take a screenshot of the episode and share it on Instagram stories and tag me at @kittyblomfield. #54 - Mastering your menstrual cycle: The 5th Vital Sign with Lisa Hendrickson-Jack
I was so excited to have Lisa on the podcast! I'm a huge fan of her book The 5th Vital Sign.If you’re a woman and you haven’t read this book, I highly recommend you read it.Prior to finding Dr Ray Peat's work, Emma Sgourakis (my now business partner) and Craig I suffered with painful and irregular periods, PMS, I had a miscarriage, a D&C, polyps as well pre-cancerous cells removed from my cervix. If you’ve followed me for a while you’ll also know I cycled through low calorie diets, excessive exercising and I was a big binge drinker for 17 years of my life. I also took the pill for many years and I had no idea what hormonal contraception was doing to my body. The book is easy to read and contains invaluable information on taking charge of your menstrual cycle and how menstrual cycle health really is the fifth vital sign for women. It also has fantastic information on the pill, IUD's, Depo-Provera and the implant and the effect they have on the female body. The majority of women that come to me want to lose weight and change the outside without realising how important it is to build a solid foundation which includes having a healthy menstrual cycle. In this episode we chat about:➡️Dangers of hormonal contraception➡️Myths about hormonal contraception and the pill➡️How the pill suppresses ovulation and why this is a problem➡️How cycle issues are often a sign of metabolic issues➡️Why nutrition is important for the menstrual cycle and reproductive health➡️Why having a regular ovulatory cycle is so important➡️Body fat levels and menstrual health➡️Overexercising and the menstrual cycle➡️What is a healthy menstrual cycle?➡️How toxins in common beauty products can impact your hormones➡️And more!Happy listening I hope you find this podcast helpful and don't forget to take a screenshot of the episode and share it on Instagram stories and tag me at @kittyblomfield. #53 - Vitamin D, Calcium and mineral metabolism with Dr Ray Peat and Kate Deering
We’ve had Dr. Peat on the podcast before, and it actually ended up being our most downloaded WinAtLife podcast. So, we brought him back again to discuss vitamin D, calcium and mineral metabolism. There’s so much good information in this one! Dr. Peat offers up a lot of clarity when it comes to the great vitamin D debate. So, should you supplement vitamin D? Should you not? What else should you know when it comes to vitamin D and your metabolic health? As a reminder Vitamin D has many namesThe three most mentioned in this podcast areCholecalciferol also known as D3 (what is in food or supplements)"Stored D" also know as calcidiol / 25OHD /hydroxycholecalciferol"Active D" also know as calcitriol / 1,25DDr. Peat uses the references of 25OHD /hydroxycholecalciferol (stored) and 1,25D (active)In this episode we talk about...➡️ The purpose of Vitamin D➡️ How is vitamin D metabolised and stored➡️ How much D is too much? ➡️ The difference between Active and Stored Vitamin D➡️ Can "stored D" have active properties?➡️ Is elevated Active D (1,25D) a good thing?➡️ Do Vitamin D supplements suppress the immune system?➡️ The Vitamin D "receptor" theory-is it correct?➡️ Are blood levels of stored D (25OHD) correct?➡️ What are optimal stored Vitamin D levels?➡️ The relationship between D and Ca➡️ Understanding the importance of parathyroid hormone (PTH)➡️ What can affect PTH besides Calcium and Vitamin D➡️ What causes calcified tissue➡️ Understanding the calcium -magnesium connection➡️ What ratios, if any, are optimal for minerals?➡️ Understanding Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis? Are they accurate?Check out the entire podcast episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcast, Stitcher, and iHeart Radio by searching for The Winatlife Podcast. At the end of the podcast, Ray was asked about a study involving Vitamin D supplements and Bone density. Here is the study and his answer:Effect of High-Dose Vitamin D Supplementation on Volumetric Bone Density and Bone StrengthA Randomized Clinical Trial. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2748796--i"They didn’t control their phosphate intake, so it’s possible that the high dose D was now and then increasing the 1,25-dihydroxy D, taking some calcium out of the bone. A problem with judging bone mineral content with x-rays is that, in stress, the fat in bone is reduced, and replaced by water, causing more of the x-rays to be absorbed, making the bone seem denser. High-dose vitamin D without extra calcium supplementation has been associated with increased levels of the active vitamin D metabolite 1, 25(OH)2 vitamin D (calcitriol), and an increase in CTx."Buy Kates book: https://nustrength.myshopify.com/products/how-to-heal-your-metabolism-by-kate-deeringDiscount code: KATE10Happy listening I hope you find this podcast helpful and don't forget to take a screenshot of the episode and share it on Instagram stories and tag me at @kittyblomfield.
