Ellie McKay - The Value of Podcasting: Investment, Sponsorship, Controversy & Relationships
Try Riverside free now: https://creators.riverside.fm/PodcastersPodcast & Use code: Podcast15 for an exclusive 15% off. Podcaster and mumpreneur Ellie McKay joins Kane in a great conversation about the value of podcasting to business, quality content and healthy debate. They also discuss notoriety, censorship and the importance of networking and powerful relationships. Ellie began podcasting in lockdown, this was after first creating a FB live series to allow herself to network and build relationships whilst being unable to meet and see people in person. The success of the FB lives gave her a eureka moment, she had a much bigger audience engaging people from home. This is what led her to podcasting and she has learnt an incredible amount in a short time. Listen in to hear her thoughts, advice and tips as well as Kane and Ellie’s thoughts on why podcasting is so different to most of the other platforms out there. KEY TAKEAWAYS Ellie’s background is in property and she has always had great relationships with her clients. She believes that relationships are of the highest value and worth so much more than any currency. Ellie didn’t set out to create a podcast but once she had made the decision she immediately got started including securing great guests. She attributes part of her fast success to the fact that she took the time to get to know her guests and build great rapport from the beginning. An unexpected bonus to the podcast for Ellie, is that it has attracted and secured her business clients. Podcasting has also allowed Ellie to create and build notoriety as well as credability, she has been able to secure private investors due to this. Your content is the single most important thing in podcasting. Everyone will have advice on interview techniques, length of episode etc. but really what matters the most is the quality of your content. There is a surprising amount of value in interviewing guests that are ‘up and coming’, those that are just a few steps ahead of your average listener is really powerful. It feels authentic and achievable to them and creates great inspiration. Choosing to have controversial guests can negative, risks include losing your following and sponsorships, but they also offer the opportunity to create discussion among guest and host as well as listeners. Podcasting is one of the few platforms out there that doesn’t have ever-changing and strict algorithms you have to battle with. You own your content and you have full control over what that is and what it looks like. It is possible to build a podcast following without pre-existing success on social media. But, Ellie has found having an existing following has helped with her success, especially in securing well-known guests. BEST MOMENTS “The more people see your message; the more people know your name” “You wouldn’t get an audience with these people if it wasn’t for a podcast” “Good advice is to just be yourself” “I don’t want an echo chamber I always want people who can challenge my own biases” ABOUT THE GUEST Ellie McKay Ellie is a straight-talking, successful property entrepreneur who passionately believes that everyone has the power within themselves to transform their lives no matter what their situation. As a mumpreneur with 3 young children and multiple businesses, Ellie likes to keep it real with her no-bs insights and share the things that have helped her achieve the level of success she has enjoyed to date. Why Start a Podcast ?
Why shouldn’t you have a podcast in 2022? Kane has trawled the internet to find why other people believe you shouldn’t podcast in 2022 and in this episode, he talks about where he agrees with them and the many ways he doesn’t agree. Listen in to find clarity on whether podcasting is right for you this year. KEY TAKEAWAYS
You’re obsessed with the outcome but you’re not regarding the grind it takes to have a successful podcast - Podcasting takes time, education and a lot of effort to reach success. If you aren’t prepared to do this then you shouldn’t start.
You aren’t creative - Kane doesn’t agree with this statement, you don’t need to be a creative to create a great podcast, you just need the right format for you.
You want quick money – Podcasting is not a get rich quick scheme. You can monetise podcasting but it’s not something that will happen instantly.
You’re not tech savvy – You don’t need to be to start a podcast, you can outsource the tech easily.
You don’t want to face competition – Podcasting isn’t a competition based space, it’s much more collaborative than you might assume. Podcasting can be passively consumed which means there are a lot more hours in the day where people listen creating a lot less competition.
You think it’s easy to learn – There is a lot to learn but if you are willing to put the effort in then anybody can learn what they need to know to podcast You don’t want to spend any money – Kane can understand this but you don’t have to spend tons of money on tech, it’s not necessary. BEST MOMENTS “Don’t give up just because you’re not making quick money. If you go into it with that mind then you probably won’t” “There is no competition it’s only collaboration, people have so much time to consume your content” VALUABLE RESOURCES Free Podcast Workshop ABOUT THE HOSTS Kane Baron, Ashley Morris & Thom Luter manage over 150 live podcasts Including Rob Moore, Kevin Clifton, Shaa Wasmand MBE & more. Kevin Clifton talks Strictly Podcasting!
In this episode, Kane speaks with Kevin Clifton, podcast host of The Kevin Clifton Show and former Strictly Come Dancing professional. They talk about his time in Strictly, the highs and lows of his career and how he has managed to overcome his own personal struggles. They also discuss all things podcasting, including monetisation, why Kevin chose to go into podcasting and the benefits and opportunities he has discovered since launching his own show. KEY TAKEAWAYS Before Strictly, Kevin did a lot of stage work which he loved but he knew there would be a time limit on it. He started to look at something that would give him a longer-lasting platform and Strictly was perfect. He was rejected the first two times he applied to Strictly but he was third time lucky and was on the show for 7 years. The pressure of performing, the press and social media on Kevin Clifton’s mental health is eventually why he decided to leave the show. It was taking his toll and he knew he needed to take a step back, realign and refocus himself. Podcasting has helped Kevin become more comfortable with himself and allowed him to feel more connected with others. He has been able to speak to people first hand about the similar difficulties they have faced. Podcasting is a platform without constant feedback like social medial channels. People can review you but they don’t comment, share and like as they would on other platforms. Interviewing people on podcasts can be so revealing. Kevin has found that many performers seem very extroverted and confident but then when you hear them talking about their struggles it really puts their humanity and authenticity at the forefront. Longform content such as podcasting is actually really unique and special. People don’t have to talk in ‘soundbites’ they can provide context, listeners can gain a full understanding behind a situation and a person. The connections Kevin has gained through podcasting has been invaluable. It’s provided a platform to getting to know people and make more valuable connections. One of Kevin Clifton’s lifelong dreams was to perform in Singing in the Rain. He got to live this dream and puts it down to his podcast, if he didn’t have his podcast he wouldn’t have made the connection that led to this role. Starting is the biggest hurdle in creating a podcast. Kevin says once you have started things become more natural and you will find through trial and error what works. Start now, get perfect later. Kevin has been able to monetise his podcast in varying ways. Directly he has set up a Patreon, indirectly he is making connections, leveraging his other projects and more. BEST MOMENTS “With podcasts you don’t see that, there’s not a comment section, you don’t know how many likes you have” “I speak to a lot of introverts, and it’s the perfect medium (podcasting) for them” “Podcasts are great for that, on podcasting people really open up and you can have that real conversation and peek behind the curtain” “It’s beneficial to them as well as they get to talk about their work, they know it’s going out to people, they get to leverage” “If I didn’t have a podcast I probably wouldn’t have done Singing in the Rain which was a bucket list item” VALUABLE RESOURCES Free Podcast Workshop ABOUT THE HOSTS Kane Baron, Ashley Morris & Thom Luter manage over 150 live podcasts Including Rob Moore, Kevin Clifton, Shaa Wasmand MBE & more. 7 Steps to Celebrity Guests – The Power and Strength of Collaboration
There are many benefits and advantages to interviewing celebrities on your podcast. Even if your show isn’t generally interview based, having some interviews with celebrities or well-known names in your niche can have a profound effect on your podcast downloads, notoriety and ultimately, it’s success. In this solo episode with Kane, he talks about the benefits of interviewing others and the 7 steps you can take to get celebrity guests onto your podcast. KEY TAKEAWAYS Voice notes are a great way to approach people to interview. It gives a personal touch as well as giving them an insight into you and your voice. You will have a much higher conversion rate when you use voice notes to ask to interview people rather than other methods such as email or a standard social media DM. When reaching out to people, show that you have done your research and tell them why it is you want to interview them. Make them aware that them coming on your show is also a benefit to them, outlining what they will get out of being interviewed on your show. Be patient. Often you will be told no, but this doesn’t mean it’s a no forever, it’s just a no for now. It can be helpful to have a spreadsheet to track who you have reached out to and when so you can reach out to them again. Ask your guests if they know anyone you should interview next. This is powerful as firstly they will only give you contacts for people at their same level or above them and secondly an introduction from a mutual contact is a strong way to start any relationship. Once you start getting guests, you can step ladder your way up the food chain. This is how you eventually get your big celebrity guests. Who do you know? You would be surprised who you have connections with, the 5 degrees of separation means you are never far away from a celebrity guest who will want to be interviewed on your podcast. Find out who oversees a person’s schedule, if they have a PA for example, find their details and contact them. Think about alternative methods. Letter writing is an unusual way to contact people now, there is little to no competition and it can be a strong way to make an impact and turn what would be a no into a definite yes. BEST MOMENTS “A no isn’t a no, it’s a no for now” “Stepladder through the food chain” “Be persistent and really stick with it because there’s always a reason someone wants to promote themselves one way or another” VALUABLE RESOURCES Free Podcast Workshop ABOUT THE HOSTS Kane Baron, Ashley Morris & Thom Luter manage over 150 live podcasts Including Rob Moore, Kevin Clifton, Shaa Wasmand MBE & more. Colin Nottage & The Interesting Health and Safety Podcast (Niche = Cash)
The more you speak to people the more you learn! A podcast can present unique opportunities, for guests, listeners and hosts alike! In this episode, Kane speaks to consultant, chair, tutor and host of The Interesting Health and Safety Podcast Colin Nottage. They discuss the reasons behind the success of Colin’s podcast, how podcasting can produce a wealth of other opportunities as well as the impact it has had on Colin’s life, business and the H&S industry as a whole. KEY TAKEAWAYS Colin started listening to podcasts himself, including Rob Moore’s The Disruptive Entrepreneur. He discovered that there was very few in the health and safety podcasting space and after attending one of the first Progressive Podcast Courses he got started. When Colin first started his podcast, his aim was to give back to the audience that had supported him. He knew he has quite a small niche but started to think about how he could scale and this is when he began interviewing guests. By interviewing great guests, Colin started learning more about the health and safety space which is not something he expected. As well as giving him new knowledge, it kept his passion and inspiration alive and he was able to deliver both of these things to his audience and his clients. The content Colin is putting out is providing a real benefit across his industry, excerpts from his episodes have been used in training and he has won awards too. One of the things Colin has learnt from doing his podcast, is that changing the culture of a business and industry has a lot more scope to impact things than talking to individual people. The quality of guests you speak to improves the more people you speak to. Colin also finds this is the case in his business. You might start small but there is an effect that compounds over time the more people you speak to and interview. So many people suffer from imposter syndrome and don’t believe they or their niche has enough value for podcasting but Colin and The Interesting Health and Safety Podcast shows how wrong this impression is. Consistency to podcasting is very important. Colin always advises to keep a ‘bank’ of reserved content for any unforeseen circumstances to allow his podcast to always publish. Collaboration is better than competition. Colin has demonstrated this by collaborating with fellow H&S Podcaster James MacPherson. They have worked together and built the first H&S community and educational tool for the industry, Project Mollitiam: https://www.projectmollitiam.com/meet-the-team Colin has big plans for the future! Including writing a book, more monetisation of the podcast, going on a coaching course and building his website. BEST MOMENTS “That was the thing that really changed it for me, when I started interviewing people” “I’ve got a real loyal following, that’s a nice thing” “There’s an awful lot of things that can be done remotely” “When I interview people, I’m now asking better questions” “The biggest art of interviewing is listening” “The amount of times I wish I’d never stopped the record button” ABOUT THE GUEST Colin Nottage Colin is passionate about and through his consultancy Influential Management Group (IMG) is able to spread into industry. Colin works at a strategic level with company owners and board members. He helps business leaders establish and achieve their health and safety ambitions. He has developed a number of leading competency improvement programmes that are delivered across industry and his strengths are his ability to take a practical approach to problem-solving and being able to liaise at all levels within an organisation. Colin also runs a company that vets contractors online and a network that develops and support H&S consultancies to become better businesses. Colin chairs the Construction Dust Partnership, an industry collaboration directly involving many organisations, including the Health and Safety Executive. He is a Post Graduate Tutor at Strathclyde University and a highly sought-after health and safety speaker and trainer. He has a Post Graduate Certificate in Safety and Risk management, an engineering degree and is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). Dodge Woodall- Creating Powerful Conversations – The Eventful Entrepreneur
What creates a powerful podcast conversation, what makes podcasting a great marketing tool and why should you start a podcast today? Kane talks to entrepreneur, owner of sports and musical festival Bournemouth 7’s and podcaster Dodge Woodall to find out his thoughts. Dodge also talks about why he created his chart topping The Eventful Entrepreneur Podcast and how it has created countless unique opportunities for him including co-hosting on the Harry Redknap Show. KEY TAKEAWAYS Due to covid, Dodge lost his festival in 2020. He knew he needed a plan b. He decided to go public by going on social media and creating his own podcast. The Eventful Entrepreneur Podcast is now chart topping, a testament to Dodge’s ability to pivot and make a success of anything he puts his mind to. Something that started with his entrepreneurial spirit when he was just a teen. Connections are key in so many areas of business, podcasting can be instrumental in creating connections as well as opportunities. Dodge believes that we are in such early stages of podcasting that if you start now you’re still early to the game which will give you great advantage. There can be great value in just listening to ‘good podcasters’, even if you aren’t interested in the subject they are talking about, you can still learn a lot. Dodge has achieved a lot in the podcasting world in just a year, he puts this down to his production of the podcast and having good guests. Guests don’t have to be ‘famous’ they just need to have a good story. Think about who you know already, there are probably people in your network who you can have on your podcast and then simply ask them who they know who you should know; if you give a good experience to your guests they will recommend you. Podcasting has allowed Dodge to create a unique and powerful marketing tool for his new event training company, his festival and his own personal brand. YouTube is the second biggest search engine in the world, it is worth putting your podcast audio onto YouTube, especially if you video it. You can video your interview with your guest for example and then repurpose the audio for your podcast and then ‘chop’ it down into clips and upload these to YouTube too. It is worth creating some solo content on your podcast alongside your interviews. It allows you to control the narrative, you can include ‘how to’ episodes for example, offering solutions, as well as giving your thoughts and opinions. BEST MOMENTS “Start today because you will not look back I promise you, your world will open up” “I didn’t have a clue what a podcast was a year ago” “when you enjoy something and it’s working then it makes life a lot easier…there’s not a better feeling than having quality conversation for an hour with someone” “Because of the podcast, it’s put a face behind the brand” “I would definitely recommend doing some solo content as people get to know you better and you build that connection” VALUABLE RESOURCES To Listen to Kane speak to Steven Barlett’s producer Jack Sylvester go to episode 7 WebsiteInstagram ABOUT THE GUEST Dodge Woodall https://dodgewoodall.com https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-eventful-entrepreneur/id1531854569 ABOUT THE HOSTS Kane Baron, Thom Luter & Aaron Nelson manage over 100 live podcasts Including Rob Moore, Kevin Clifton, Shaa Wasmand & more. What is a Good podcast Title?
In this episode, Aaron and Kane talk about how and why your title, systems and analytics are so important in building the success of your podcast. They also discuss engagement, audience, monetising your podcast and deliver some great hints and tips throughout. KEY TAKEAWAYS You need to ensure you get the balance right between having a niche and being too general. You need to differentiate yourself in some way, it can be a good idea to start very niche and then spread your net wider as you grow. Your title should incorporate what industry/category you are in but should be ‘niched down’. Meaning you should never just call yourself ‘The Marketing Podcast’ but concentrate on your specific audience and reflect that in your title too. You can treat collaborations like a marketing campaigns. Think about how you and your brand can fit within other podcasts and then collaborate with them with this in mind. Engagement is more important that download numbers. An engaged audience is a superior audience; they either like what you are doing or are looking for more of what you are doing. You don’t have to be too clever with your name. It’s important that your title is descriptive and informative. Be consistent with your publishing schedule. It’s better to start with less episodes than you think you will manage to produce, being consistent is more important than having more content. Missing episodes means you lose listeners. Try and have a bank of episodes and be ahead so you can deal with any unforeseen circumstances. When you first start podcasting, don’t look at your analytics for the first six months. Then when you do, bear in mind podcasting is very different to platforms such as YouTube, it will be smaller numbers it's a different game altogether. Audience interaction information can be a lot more useful and insightful than just analytics data. Analytics data can be useful in helping guide decisions but it shouldn't be the only thing you use and rely on. BEST MOMENTS “How can I fit me, my persona, my brand, my niche in other shows?” “I love a clever name but sometimes that can be detrimental” “Everything you do has to be at the novice in your industry and the person who has no idea who you are” “If you’re not there when they’re expecting it then they’ll be listening to the next thing” VALUABLE RESOURCES WebsiteInstagram ABOUT THE HOSTS Kane Baron, Thom Luter & Aaron Nelson manage over 100 live podcasts Including Rob Moore, Kevin Clifton, Shaa Wasmand & more. "Keep It Simple" Jim ‘Mr Jim’ Jacobs (Niches, Technology & Analytics)
Jim is an inspirational podcaster, but probably not for the reasons you immediately think of. An ‘ordinary man’ who demonstrates that having a niche doesn’t hold you back in the podcasting world. His podcast is all about bedtime stories and became successful completely by accident, he didn’t initially set out to become a podcaster at all! Kane talks to Jim about why he began his podcast Kids Short Stories in the first place, why it has been so successful, the evolution of the technology he has used and what his plans are for his future in podcasting. KEY TAKEAWAYS Jim’s podcast, Kids Short Stories, started off to fill in a need for Jim’s own family. He was travelling a lot for work but still wanted the ability to tell his unique and creative bedtime stories to his children whilst he was away, so he created a podcast just for them. After a little while he realised that other people were listening. He asked his wife if he had shared the podcast and she hadn’t, these were organic listeners. The reviews started coming in and listeners began asking for stories for their children, this helped with the shareability and ‘virality’ of the podcast. Everyone wanted their child’s story to be told. Jim didn’t aim to ‘create’ a podcast with a following, for the first year he literally recorded on his phone in his car. After a year, he invested in a Shure Mic for simplicity and portability. This demonstrates that you don’t need ‘all of the gear’ to get started, just begin and get perfect later. Kids consume a lot of content, they have a lot of free time! The analytics surrounding podcasting is the same as something such as YouTube or Blogs. It’s just a different medium. To start with, Jim focused solely on his reviews, the only way to communicate with him was by leaving him a 5* review helping tremendously with the growth of the podcast. Think about your content and how consumable it is. Jim’s advice is to do shorter pieces of content, you want your listener to listen to your whole episode, not many people have time to listen to something 1hour + long. If you have a long interview for example, you can break this down into more specific yet smaller bits of content. I Heart Radio have partnered with Jim, he will soon be releasing 15 episodes a week with them. They will own and look after the advertising on the podcast. Jim has created a separate RSS feed so that those who want to pay for the episodes to be ad-free can which is a brilliant monetisation tool. In a battle against screen time, podcasting presents a unique opportunity. It provides screen-less entertainment for children, something Jim is keen to talk about with parents. BEST MOMENTS “There’s plenty of technology today that is on your phone that exceeds the bar of the minimum expectations of the consumer” “I feel like I stumbled into this but when I look back I see that there a lot of things that are intentional” “I had zero influence online before this show” “I believe that more content is better, so I’d rather get it all out there” “If I could go back, I’d tell myself, story every day, go, it would have been even more awesome” “If you really want to be a podcaster, if you really want to put out content, what’s the easiest way for me to do that now? What do I have right now to get it started? How To get in Podcast Charts (Analytics & Consumption explained)
As a podcaster, if you fully understand your listeners, you can produce better and more valuable content for them. Charts, Analytics and Consumption Data are all key ways you can develop a deeper understanding of your listeners and enable you to make data-driven, educated decisions regarding your podcast. Join Thom and Kane in this episode to find out more about the technical background to podcasting and how gaining a true understanding of this can be invaluable in creating a podcast that is worthwhile, charts highly and stands the test of time. KEY TAKEAWAYS When you are setting up your podcast you must pick both a category and subcategory. The Apple Podcast App has a very dominant position in podcasting so most other podcast apps have taken cues from the way they have set up categories. It’s important spend time analysing the right category as this will affect where and how you chart. In any sub category, you are probably not competing with more than a few hundred people and even those people are probably not taking podcasting seriously. You can have the ability to really dominate your subcategory in terms of charting. Having a co-ordinated plan when you launch your podcast and when each episode is released, means you can ensure your downloads/subscribers happen in a shorter time frame as this will help you chart higher. You want to push all your downloads to the smallest window possible to give yourself the best chance to chart. Figure out who your ideal listener is and find them. If you can offer something to them to channel them to review, download and subscribe when you launch your podcast this will aid you in charting, especially if you chose a less competitive category/subcategory. You can then use charting to prove your success and help you land better guests for future episodes. You aren’t a slave to an algorithm in podcasting, it is completely designed to get you into the charts. A subscriber/follow is someone who has gone to your show and effectively turned on notifications to be told when you upload new episodes and it also shows you in their personal feed. Consumption data allows you to make educated data driven decisions on formatting, content and gives an in-depth understanding on who and how listeners are consuming your podcast. BEST MOMENTS “In any given subcategory, you’re probably only competing with a few dozen to a few hundred people realistically to be able to chart” “You want to push all your downloads to the smallest window possible to give yourself the best chance to chart” “Even a small indie podcast can chart really well because of how the charts are set up” “You can’t assume one size fits all will work for you, for your content and for your audience” “It will serve you better if you have shorter episodes” “Understanding your analytics is vital so that you do create the content that is worthwhile” VALUABLE RESOURCES WebsiteInstagram https://chartable.com ABOUT THE HOSTS Kane Baron, Thom Luter & Aaron Nelson manage over 100 live podcasts Including Rob Moore, Kevin Clifton, Shaa Wasmand & more.
