Podcaster and mumpreneur Ellie McKay joins Kane in a great conversation about the value of podcasting to business, quality content and healthy debate. They also discuss notoriety, censorship and the importance of networking and powerful relationships.
Ellie began podcasting in lockdown, this was after first creating a FB live series to allow herself to network and build relationships whilst being unable to meet and see people in person. The success of the FB lives gave her a eureka moment, she had a much bigger audience engaging people from home. This is what led her to podcasting and she has learnt an incredible amount in a short time. Listen in to hear her thoughts, advice and tips as well as Kane and Ellie’s thoughts on why podcasting is so different to most of the other platforms out there.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Ellie’s background is in property and she has always had great relationships with her clients. She believes that relationships are of the highest value and worth so much more than any currency.
- Ellie didn’t set out to create a podcast but once she had made the decision she immediately got started including securing great guests. She attributes part of her fast success to the fact that she took the time to get to know her guests and build great rapport from the beginning.
- An unexpected bonus to the podcast for Ellie, is that it has attracted and secured her business clients.
- Podcasting has also allowed Ellie to create and build notoriety as well as credability, she has been able to secure private investors due to this.
- Your content is the single most important thing in podcasting. Everyone will have advice on interview techniques, length of episode etc. but really what matters the most is the quality of your content.
- There is a surprising amount of value in interviewing guests that are ‘up and coming’, those that are just a few steps ahead of your average listener is really powerful. It feels authentic and achievable to them and creates great inspiration.
- Choosing to have controversial guests can negative, risks include losing your following and sponsorships, but they also offer the opportunity to create discussion among guest and host as well as listeners.
- Podcasting is one of the few platforms out there that doesn’t have ever-changing and strict algorithms you have to battle with. You own your content and you have full control over what that is and what it looks like.
- It is possible to build a podcast following without pre-existing success on social media. But, Ellie has found having an existing following has helped with her success, especially in securing well-known guests.
