Nicole Lorent, a licensed mental health counselor, discusses her personal experience with chronic pain and her journey to finding relief through metabolic therapies. After experiencing chronic pain and being prescribed various pain medications with limited success, Nicole discovered a neural stimulator that alleviated her pain. However, she was still reliant on pain medication. Nicole eventually found the ketogenic diet, which significantly improved her brain function and mood. She shares the transformative effects of the diet on her own life and how it motivated her to help others in similar situations.
Nicole Lorent highlights the profound impact of ketogenic diets on mental health. She discusses how the brain's improved energy and sensitivity resulting from the diet can lead to significant improvements in mood and cognitive function. Nicole underlines the connection between metabolic health and mental health, emphasizing that addressing underlying metabolic issues can be crucial in treating mental illness effectively. She also addresses the importance of working with healthcare professionals to navigate the implementation of a ketogenic diet while taking into account potentiation effects and medication management.
Nicole Lorent emphasizes the need for individualized approaches when it comes to metabolic and nutritional therapies. She discusses the significance of nutrition and nutrient deficiencies in brain health, highlighting the value of a trace mineral supplement and the importance of factors like choline for brain function. Nicole also notes the benefits of nutrigenomics analysis in determining unique genetic factors that may affect nutrient needs. Finally, she discusses her use of functional blood chemistry analysis and the importance of collaborating with healthcare professionals to incorporate metabolic therapies effectively.
To attract clinicians and prescribers towards acknowledging and utilizing ketogenic therapy, there is a need for more continuing medical education (CME) credits, a virtual platform, and increased instruction and content in this area. The availability of comprehensive education, including nuts and bolts education on using ketogenic therapy for different diagnoses, can greatly contribute to helping individuals with various conditions.
While ketones are an alternative energy source for the brain and have various benefits, higher ketone levels are not necessarily better. The optimal range for behavioral enhancement, anti-seizure effects, and other positive effects seems to be around 1 to 2 millimolar. High doses of exogenous ketones can lead to energy toxicity and disruption of metabolic stability, causing unfavorable outcomes. Therefore, it is important to focus on the ketogenic diet as a primary approach and use exogenous ketones or MCT supplements as augmented tools, ensuring careful monitoring of ketone levels and metabolic response.
This week’s episode of The Metabolic Link features an interview with Nicole Laurent, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who helps her clients use ketogenic dietary therapy as a treatment for mental illness and neurological issues. Nicole was one of seven pioneers of Metabolic Psychiatry recognized by the Baszucki Brain Research Fund and the Milken Institute with the Metabolic Mind Award in 2022.
What is Metabolic Psychiatry?
Metabolic psychiatry is an emerging field that focuses on targeting and treating metabolic dysfunction to improve mental health outcomes. There is growing evidence of a connection between mental illness and altered metabolism in the brain, so focusing on metabolic dysfunction in addition to traditional mental health treatments can further improve treatment outcomes.
Nicole Laurent’s Story
Having already been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, Nicole developed trigeminal neuralgia while completing her graduate degree. Trigeminal neuralgia is a chronic pain disorder involving sudden and severe facial pain, and despite trying various treatments, Nicole was prescribed increasing doses of pain medication. These came with a host of negative side effects including cognitive decline and reduced quality of life.
It wasn’t until Nicole addressed her underlying metabolic dysfunction through a ketogenic diet that her life changed: “…the energy came on, the lights came on, and I knew I was on the right track."
Nicole Laurent’s Work
Today, Nicole works as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and life coach, helping clients use nutrition to feed and heal their brains alongside traditional therapy modalities including CBT, DBT, and EMDR.
