Physician and strength coach, Dr. Jordan Feigenbaum, discusses the physical activity guidelines, the difference between physical activity and daily activity, VO2 max, cardiac remodeling, women's fear of lifting weights, and the impact of resistance training on health. They also explore scientific education and the challenges of communicating health information on social media.
Regular exercise improves cardiovascular health and reduces the incidence of disease.
Strength training has positive effects on overall health and may reduce the risk of cognitive decline.
Exercise positively affects every organ system and plays a crucial role in improving heart disease risk factors.
Deep dives
The benefits of exercise on cardiovascular health
Exercise greater than 1500 met minutes per week has been shown to improve cardiovascular health and reduce the incidence of disease. While some adaptations in the cardiovascular system may appear concerning, overall, these individuals live longer and have better health outcomes.
The importance of strength training and resistance exercise
Strength training and resistance exercise have numerous positive effects on overall health. It improves quality of life, functional scores, and physiological reserve. Resistance training has been found to be beneficial in reducing the risk of cognitive decline, improving cognitive performance, and potentially attenuating some forms of dementia.
The impact of exercise on various diseases and organ systems
Exercise positively affects every organ system, biomarker, and tissue in the body. It plays a crucial role in improving heart disease risk factors, blood sugar control, and reducing the incidence of major adverse cardiac events. Resistance training has shown promising results in improving functional scores in individuals with Parkinson's disease and other forms of cognitive impairment. The benefits of exercise far outweigh the risks of sedentary behavior, making exercise a crucial component of a healthy lifestyle.
Exercise and Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) Scores
Exercise has been found to cause adaptations that stabilize existing plaque in arteries and improve blood flow to the heart. Marathoners, athletes, and highly active individuals tend to have higher CAC scores, indicating potential calcification in their arteries. However, despite higher CAC scores, these individuals have lower rates of heart disease compared to less active individuals with lower CAC scores. This suggests that exercise is a feature, not a bug, in reducing the risk of heart disease.
Aerobic and Resistance Training Adaptations
Aerobic exercise focuses on the delivery and removal of oxygen and energy to and from the tissues, while resistance training emphasizes muscular force production. Each type of exercise leads to different adaptations. Conditioning exercises can also increase muscular hypertrophy and resistance training can improve VO2 max, but to a lesser extent. Both forms of exercise have unique benefits, like resistance training improving muscle function and structure, and aerobic training enhancing energy supply and the ability to produce force repeatedly. The key is to incorporate both types of exercise, as they each offer distinct advantages.
