#20: Andy Magness: How To Train For 50+ Mile Ultra Endurance Races In One Hour Per Week
Andy Magness is a husband, father, recreational philosopher, occasional adventurer, part-time athlete, race director, youth philanthropist, and author. Andy is a rock climber turned ultra endurance fanatic and pushes his mind and body to it's limits. I don't think he'll mind me saying that I think he's borderline crazy as illustrated and reinforced by his impressive Race Resume. To prepare for this podcast, I set aside some time to read through his website and resources. I was so impressed with his Ultra Mental Book that I devoured it one sitting. I thought it was beautifully written, funny, authentic and very practical. Andy has an MA in physics, and due to a growing list of responsibilities, he decided to put his scientific brain to work to figure out how he could continue to participate in adventure races whilst significantly reducing his training volume. Andy stumbled across HIIT (high intensity interval training) and found that he could train for 1-3 hours a week (typically just 1 hour a week!) and reduce his risk of injury, improve his performance and make more time for his other responsibilities and past times. Andy's story and race performances are a powerful testimony for the efficacy of high intensity training and how it can be applied to prevent injury, increase training efficiency, and get better results. It's refreshing to hear about the productive application of HIT outside the world of body building. Andy's work has shown that appropriate physical conditioning (like HIT or HIIT) can serve as the foundational training program for many athletic pursuits. We cover A LOT, including: How Andy went from training 15+ hours to 1 hour per week and improved his performance. What 20% of mental exercises Andy uses for maximum benefit. Is the will power needed for ultra endurance races hard wired or can it be learned? The importance of training specificity to the actual competition. How to train your cardiovascular system without putting in 10, 20, 30 training hours per week. How to significantly reduce the risk of injury when training for ultra endurance events/any competition. The different diets recommended for ultra endurance. The hardest event and experience that Andy has ever been through (including a near death experience that gave him a perspective that would serve him for years to come). The best way to prepare for a 12 km obstacle race for optimal performance. This episode is sponsored by Hituni.com, providers of the best online courses in high intensity training. #18: John Little: Inside the Mind of Mike Mentzer, Body By Science and his Workout with Hercules
John Little's resume is prolific. Alongside Dr Doug McGuff, he is the co-author of Body By Science and author of Max Contraction Training (to name a couple) and is considered to be one of the world's foremost authorities on Bruce Lee, his training methods, and philosophies. John is the only person authorised to review the entirety of Lee's personal notes, sketches, and reading annotations and to edit books on his behalf. Some of his notable works include The Warrior Within: The Philosophies of Bruce Lee and The Art of Expressing the Human Body. Body By Science was a very pivotal book in my health and fitness journey and it was a real honour to have John on the show. He was a very humble guest and gave me a unique perspective on multiple aspects of high intensity training and health and fitness in general. A recurring theme in this interview is the health and fitness industry and its relentless drive to leverage mass media to manufacture the desire for people to be muscular, ripped, and attractive. It does this because it wants to continue to profit, and after all, as John said in this interview, it's hard to turn a dollar on being well hydrated and having good genetics. "Why is our existence defined by how big someone's arm is?" - John Little In the pursuit of bigger muscles, it's easy to forget the bigger picture, and that is the vast number of benefits stimulated by effective exercise. In this interview, John and I discuss this philosophical problem and the biological laws that govern it, Bruce Lee's influence, training protocols, and the wisdom shared by body building legend, Mike Mentzer. #14: Ben Greenfield on the Pros and Cons of High Intensity Strength Training, Building Muscle on a High Fat Diet and Why Eating Junk is Stupid
I was super stoked to have Ben Greenfield on the Corporate Warrior podcast. I've been listening to his podcast Ben Greenfield Fitness (one of the top podcasts on health in iTunes) for some time, and it's kind of a dream come true to get him on my show. Ben is a New York Times Bestselling author with his book Beyond Training, an ex-body builder and Ironman triathlete. In 2008 Ben was nominated by NSCA as America's top personal trainer, and in 2013 and 2014, Ben was voted as one of the top 100 most influential individuals in health and fitness. To be honest, I am just scratching the surface. I could dedicate a single blog post to Ben's bio and it would be a good word count! Needless to say, this man hustles and walks the walk. In this episode, I challenge Ben on his exercise regimen, and in particular, his strength training. We discuss the pros and cons of high intensity strength training, diet, and Ben's fitness regime.
