Episode 527: Episode 276- Daniel Guzman- Meet The Athlete Where They Thrive

“You have to have patience to allow them (the athletes) to figure out what works best for them.”“What are the things that can actually anchor me down in a time of complete uncertainty?”“How are you going to be the best coach that you can be for your athletes? I don’t think that’s going to be on low sleep or being over worked because, like we said, our seasons are long.”This episode of The Podcast is brought to you by Exxentric, the makers of the kBox and kPulley. All others, or to learn more about the kBox, kPulley and flywheel training, please go to their website at: https://exxentric.com/.This weeks episode of The Podcast I had the opportunity to sit down and catch up with Daniel Guzman and chat about flexibility in our programming and communication. After a quick run down of how he got back to LA we dive right into the unique challenges around physical preparation going into this off season. With the pandemic there are unique challenges to the athletes in their preparation with the restrictions that people are living under, which in some places is eliminating “pick up” and that could be a primary stimuli in their off season. We then discuss how the pandemic has taught us how to communicate better and forced us to reflect on our practice, and find better ways to get input from our athletes. We then discuss some aspects of the “off season” that we feel may be misinterpreted including goal setting, keeping the primary focus the focus, and autonomy/learning for the athlete. We finish off discussing the impact this has had on coaching health, and how it has made both of us find our “totems” to ground ourselves to find our “shut off” points to pause from work. One of the daily tasks of this program are reading 10 pages a day, which has really helped me to keep me growing and expanding as a coach. “As powerful as the phrase, and as real as the phrase is, your network is your net worth, what you provide is even more important.”“At the end of the you keep growing from your mentors, and you keep growing from your mentees because they’re the most important person to your career development, and they’re the most impactful person to how you can diversify your education?"This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by Vald Performance. Vald’s constant drive to help coaches find better information to drive more educated directions is second to none. Check out this week’s Metric Minute and make sure to go check out all their great products at: www.valdperformance.com All too often we look at our mentors as the person who is going to “get us the next job”. This has been a topic of discussion lately in the lovely world of strength coach twitter, and one that I think we are missing the forest for the trees with. We need to take a step back and look at what is the most important part of this process, and that is hiring the right person. But the question is, what makes that person right, or the position right? In this week’s My Thoughts Monday I share where I see that, and why I feel like that has been the driving factor behind our success and evolution as coaches and a staff. ENJOY THE CONTENT? Episode 521: My Thoughts Monday #174- Jay DeMayo- The Confusion Around Aerobic Exercise

“If we’re going to say, and we’re going to mean, that we are trying to provide the minimal effective dose, and we are trying to pick the low hanging fruit off the tree first then what we can’t do is take the simplest, easiest, least stressful forms of activity and say ‘we will never do that’.”This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by Vald Performance. Vald’s constant drive to help coaches find better information to drive more educated directions is second to none. Check out this weeks Metric Minute and make sure to go check out all their great products at: www.valdperformance.com In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I chime in on a recent discussion I saw on strength coach Twitter, the utilization of aerobic exercise in physical preparation programs. Aerobic work, practically long duration aerobic work, has been looked down upon as a means to improve sport performance, and I feel this is a mistake. There are many situations where low end “cardio” is actually the best choice for an athlete. This really exposes the underlying problem, that we try to make too many blanket statements about training, a subject that we also say shouldn’t have a cookie cutter approach and that we need to go after the “low hanging fruit”. Instead we throw out one of the least stressful means and method we could utilize that can provide the greatest overall impact in their ability to perform at practice and in competition. I think that’s a mistake. ENJOY THE CONTENT? THEN YOU SHOULD CHECK OUT THE STRENGTH COACH NETWORK!We built The Strength Coach Network to provide you three ways become the best practitioner possible.
