Episode 518: My Thoughts Monday #173- Jay DeMayo- It Is Not Unsolicited Advice, It’s An Insult

“Let’s work together more to get through this because we can do better.”“We’re trying to ask question for people that don’t know those questions exist at times, and then we are turning around and getting upset when people aren’t willing to listen to the answers to the questions that they didn’t even know existed.”This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by Vald Performance. Vald’s constant drive to help coaches find better information to drive more educated directions is second to none. Check out this weeks Metric Minute and make sure to go check out all their great products at: www.valdperformance.com Throughout this unique time we have been going through there were bound to be some bad things that happened in sports because of the time away, we all knew this. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I talk about how there are two ways people are addressing this, trying to look at information and do better when the athletes start back in the spring after another lay off, and those who are just providing unsolicited advice about what people need to be doing. Using this time to point fingers at people is really disappointing and just attacking coaches at our weakest point, and that is the anxiety many coaches have when it comes to their professional stability. We need to be better than thisENJOY THE CONTENT? Episode 517: Episode 272- Andrew Langford- How the Principles of Science are Important To Coaches

“We do collect enough data, it’s often that we don’t really use it or look at it or use it properly.”This episode of The Podcast is brought to you by Exxentric, the makers of the kBox and kPulley. Exxentric is the world leader in fly wheel training technology providing multiple pieces to fit your budget and needs to better serve your athletes. All others, or to learn more about the kBox, kPulley and flywheel training, please go to their website at: https://exxentric.com/.What should the actual requirements to become a strength and conditioning coach be, and where can governing bodies do better to regulate these credentials? This has been a hot topic for quite a while in our small corner in the world of sport and exactly why I wanted Andrew Langford on The Podcast. Andrew is the director of the International Universities Strength and Conditioning Association, which is a new accreditation organization that’s providing a lot of great support to helping improve our profession, where they’re main objective is to bridge the gap between schooling/research and practical experience/coaching on the floor. Throughout the talk Andrew dives into the role of research in education, it’s limitations within journals, the role of data collection, mistakes coaches may be making with it, and the power of a staff audit in bringing more value and displaying how things can improve. Episode 517: My Thoughts Monday #172- Yes, We Have A Long Way to Go, But How Far Have We Come?

“We need to take a step back and look at the entire situation so that we know, ‘hey you know what it’s not ideal, it’s not perfect, but it’s better than it was in 2004’.”This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by Vald Performance. Vald’s constant drive to help coaches find better information to drive more educated directions is second to none. Check out this week’s Metric Minute and make sure to go check out all their great products at: www.valdperformance.com There is a common knee jerk reaction to position postings on social media that typically is something similar to “I can’t believe that they are still paying people so bad for these positions, it’s why I got out of the profession.” In this week’s My Thoughts Monday I talk about these openings, the evolution of a position, and how we may actually be moving forward. We are not where we all feel that should be, but if we take a step back and look, we may be in a better spot then we think. ENJOY THE CONTENT? Episode 516: Episode 271- Courtney Walden- Providing a Stimulus To Impact Movement Quality

“If they haven’t tapped that out at all, why switch it?”This episode of The Podcast is brought to you by Exxentric, the makers of the kBox and kPulley. All others, or to learn more about the kBox, kPulley and flywheel training, please go to their website at: https://exxentric.com/.Today we are joined by Courtney Walden. After a run down of how she got out to Eugene she shares with us the role of her athletic career impacted her as a coach, including how the lessons of “contact time” and “stimulus” were taught to her in a unique manner through her time as a gymnast and a pole vaulter. She then discussed the idea of movement quality and how “feeling good” when doing it is just as valuable, if not more so. This is so vital, not just in allowing the athlete to load better, but also in helping drive autonomy, ownership, and buy-in with training. This leads her into a lesson on cueing, and how allowing the players to use iPads and review reps with their teammates helped build new “sport related” cues so the players had a better understanding of what they were trying to do in the gym. Episode 516: My Thoughts Monday #171- Jay DeMayo- Has the Pendulum Swung Too Far…Again?

“If we are being entrusted for the physical preparation of the student athletes, or of the young people we get to work with, shouldn’t we allow the coaches, and shouldn’t we provide them the trust to develop the special preparation for their athletes?”This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by Vald Performance. Vald’s constant drive to help coaches find better information to drive more educated directions is second to none. Check out this week’s Metric Minute and make sure to go check out all their great products at: www.valdperformance.com In our world of sport performance there have been multiple pendulum swings. From the Olympic lifts, to Husker Power, to functional training, the list goes on and on. One that has been most active of late is the importance of specificity. In this week’s My Thoughts Monday I share some of the reflecting I have been doing of late when it comes to programming, and why I think we may have gone too far down the “specific” rabbit hole, and why this may be one of the things limiting us as a profession by preventing us to develop a true “role” in sport.ENJOY THE CONTENT?
