103. One Thing Carnivore Can't Heal
In part two of this interview, I share something that is very near and dear to me. We discuss disordered eating and how we need to have a healthy relationship with food. We discuss the following in chronological order:Relationship with food and disordered eating. What Mary did to improve her relationship with food.Mary’s thesis on mental health and diet.Mood imbalances and depression.-------- Mary's BiographyFrom about the age of ten I became self-conscious about my body. I had two small framed skinny sisters. Compared to them I was considered to be "fat." This set off a lifetime of feast-or-famine eating disorder and an obsession with my appearance. I had serious digestive issues, food and pollen allergies, eczema, chronic systemic pain, depression, Candida, chronic fatigue, either severe constipation or diarrhea, cold sores, and several episodes of colds and bronchitis a year. These symptoms continued and worsened as I aged. Later I developed hypoglycemia, hypertension and an irregular heart. In my early twenties I developed an interest in nutrition and began to search out any information I could find about the human body and how to use food and supplements to achieve health. That was over fifty years ago. I have probably tried every conceivable diet at least once in an effort to lose weight and look like my sisters. As I aged my emphasis began to shift from an obsession about being skinny to achieving optimal health. At age seventy-eight I am still searching and learning. Due to aggressive food allergies, over the years my protocol was whittled down to gluten free grains, some green vegetables, almonds, walnuts and meat. I ate very little meat because I believed it would cause acidity setting up an environment in my body for cancer. As I made dietary and other lifestyle changes over the years my health improved but I was still plagued with allergies, digestive issues, eczema, mild depression, and systemic pain. I was on medication for hypertension and began having episodes of AFib. At the suggestion of my daughter, I began to follow the carnivore story. I believed anyone who only ate meat was insane and would end up with serious nutritional deficiencies leading to disease and death but I was desperate and ready to consider just about anything. As I listened to physicians, scientist and other nutritional specialists along with countless ordinary folks tell their story of their carnivore cure I became convinced it was worth a try. February 2, 2020 I began my carnivore journey. A little over a year later I am no longer suffering from many of the symptoms that I had lived with all of my life. Allergies are not gone but symptoms are greatly improved. I no longer suffer from eczema, hypoglycemia, hypertension, irregular heart, depression or digestive issues. I sleep well and most days have good sustained energy. Systemic pain is greatly reduced. I have lost 18 pounds and gone from a size 16 to a size 12, however losing weight is no longer on my radar. I have learned that my body will find its perfect weight as it continues to heal.Carnivore is not a cure-all but it is a powerful way to eat and live that heals the body and restores health especially when combined with other healthy lifestyle choices such as adequate hydration, managing stress, daily exercise and proper rest. I had the pleasure of interviewing Ms. Mary Fields, who has done a ton of healing in her 70’s eating a meat-based diet. This goes to show that it’s never too late to start the healing process. In this interview we discuss the following in chronological order:Tell us a little about yourself and why you started your carnivore journey.Dietary changes in the beginning and what do you eat?Weight loss on a carnivore diet.Thoughts on the carnivore diet after doing it for 1 year. What have you healed?Oxalate dumping and AFib.Bloodwork on the carnivore diet. What about your family? Are they carnivore?Do you think the carnivore diet is for everyone?Recommendations for older people if they decide to start the carnivore diet.-------- Mary's BiographyFrom about the age of ten I became self-conscious about my body.
