Big Boys Don't Cry with Jeremy Grater & Zach Tucker

Text us a comment or question! As men, we’re taught from an early age to “toughen up” and not talk about our feelings. But burying our emotions and trauma doesn’t make them go away – it usually just leads to more struggle down the road. I should know, because I've been there myself.  After collapsing one day from stress and burnout, I realized I needed to make some big changes in my life. I started re-evaluating my mental health and made the courageous decision to get help. Along the way, I’ve learned that real change doesn’t happen overnight – it takes small, consistent steps in the right direction.  That’s why I’m so excited about my latest podcast episode, where I chat with two guys who have walked the walk when it comes to prioritizing mental fitness. Neither Jeremy nor Zach consider themselves gurus; they’re simply a few steps ahead on the path and hoping to light the way for others. These dads and husbands openly share their stories of trauma and addiction, and the little lifelines that helped them slowly turn things around - things like therapy, meditation, exercise and community. It wasn’t easy, and they still have bad days, but they persevered because they knew they owed it to themselves and their families.  I found so much of my own story reflected in their journeys, and I know you will too. Jeremy and Zach are putting in the work so we don't have to struggle alone. If you’re looking for motivation and real talk about men’s mental health, don’t miss this game-changing episode. The struggle is real, but there is hope. You can connect with Jeremy and Zach in the following ways:Website:https://www.thefitmess.comYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI4hazn4DFj8vYx1pG3-kkQInstagram - @fitmessguysTwitter - @FitMessGuys Facebook - @fitmessguys Ready to rewrite the narrative of your life and health? Coach's Corner - Diet Strategies for Healthy Sustainable Fat Loss

Text us a comment or question!Welcome back to another episode of the Over 50 Health and Wellness podcast! In this week's Coach's Corner, I'm going to continue our three-part series on strategies for healthy and sustainable weight loss by discussing the diet phase. Last week, we covered the pre-diet phase which focused on optimizing your metabolism before starting a diet. If you haven't listened to that episode, I highly recommend you go back and do so before diving into today's topic.  To kick things off, I want to share a powerful client testimonial we recently received from Frankie, one of the members of our community. Frankie came to us hoping to lose 10 pounds but after 6 months she had only lost 6 pounds. However, during that time she increased her protein intake, started strength training, and increased her calories from 1600 to 2300 per day. As a result, she is now in her diet phase eating 1700 calories and has already lost 6 more pounds. Even more impressively, she is now fitting into clothes she hasn't worn in 7 years!  This demonstrates two key things. First, the number on the scale doesn't tell the whole story. Frankie gained muscle during the pre-diet phase which led to positive changes in her body composition. Second, by optimizing her metabolism first, she can now eat in a deficit during her diet phase while still consuming more calories than when she started with us. This metabolic repair is critical for sustainable fat loss. When it comes to determining your calorie deficits for the diet phase, a good rule of thumb is to cut 20-25% of your maintenance calories. For Frankie, that meant going from 2300 down to 1700 calories per day. I recommend keeping your diet phase fairly short - around 4-6 weeks - because extended periods in a deficit can be counterproductive.  During the diet phase, keep prioritizing protein at 0.7-1g per pound of ideal body weight. The key is continuing your strength training workouts to preserve your hard-earned muscle. For newer lifters, you may even experience "body recomposition" by losing fat and gaining muscle at the same time! You'll know it's time to end your diet phase when your weight loss plateaus for 1-2 weeks. At that point, you can either take an additional calorie cut if you still have room or you can start the reverse diet process which I'll cover next week. The main signs that it's definitely time to switch from fat loss back to metabolic rebuilding are: increased hunger, irritability, low energy, poor sleep, and reduced libido. Remember that if you lose 1lb of fat but gain 1lb of muscle, that's a huge win! Gaining lean tissue is key for health and longevity even if the number on the scale doesn't budge. That wraps up this week's coach's corner on executing an effective diet phase. If you found this information helpful, please leave a 5-star review and be sure to join me next time when I'll share strategies for the critical post-diet phase. Coach's Corner - Pre-Diet Hacks for Lasting Weight Loss

Text us a comment or question! The episode starts with me making an analogy to lottery winners - how they often end up broke because they don't learn good financial habits first. The same goes for rapid weight loss without good habits in place. I explain that what you do before and after a diet is actually more important than the diet itself! I share that this will be a 3-part series on optimizing your diet approach. Today we covered the pre-diet phase. Next week will be the actual diet, and then we'll wrap up with the crucial post-diet phase.  For the pre-diet phase, I discuss the following  5 steps: 1. Build Strength - Focus on age-appropriate strength training, not crazy heavy lifting. Just 45 mins to 1 hour 3 days a week can work wonders by boosting metabolism and preventing age-related muscle and bone loss.  2. Reverse Diet - Slowly increase calories each week to reach an appropriate maintenance level before starting your diet. This supports muscle building and resets your metabolism after prior restricting.  3. Prioritize Protein - Eat 0.7-1g of protein per pound of ideal body weight to clearly signal your body to build muscle. I share good sources and tips like a protein-rich breakfast. 4. Manage Stress - Chronic stress hurts weight loss, so mindfulness, meditation, magnesium, and restorative yoga can help counterbalance a stressful lifestyle. 5. Get More Sleep - Sleep is one of the most powerful health and weight loss hacks. Support restful sleep by optimizing your sleep environment and habits.  I explain that this pre-diet phase could take a few months depending on your starting point, but leads to better weight loss AND keeping it off long-term. Next week we'll dive into the diet phase! I hope these steps help you approach weight loss from a sustainable, healthy angle. All of the free guides I mentioned in this episode can be found at:www.silveredgefree.com Want to rewrite the narrative of your life and health? From Autoimmunity to Vibrant Health with Cassandra Carpenter & Noelle Creamer

Text us a comment or question! As someone who has dealt with my own chronic health issues, I was really inspired by Cassandra and Noelle's stories. Like many people, they both struggled trying to get an accurate diagnosis and find relief for their mysterious symptoms.  What really resonated with me was the isolation and lack of support they experienced once diagnosed. The conventional medicine route of medications and procedures didn't provide the full solution. That's when they realized they had to become their own health advocates and investigate lifestyle changes like diet, movement, reducing toxins and more.  Through trial and error, they found combinations that worked to heal their bodies and put their diseases in remission. But what Noelle and Cassandra say made the biggest difference was finding community. They wished they had a supportive group who understood what they were going through earlier in their journey.  That's why they started BrightlyThrive - to provide the community, resources, and encouragement they needed during their autoimmunity experience. Their mission is to reframe autoimmunity as an opportunity, not a life sentence. During our conversation, Noelle and Cassandra shared: - How autoimmune diseases have been skyrocketing, with over 100 types affecting 50 million Americans - Steps they took to heal including eliminating trigger foods, gut healing protocols, lifestyle changes - The power of mindset and having the belief you can thrive with autoimmunity  - Why connection with others on a similar path is such strong medicine - How an autoimmune diagnosis can be a catalyst to transform your health and life I was blown away by their positivity, passion and dedication to helping others going through autoimmune struggles. It's not an easy road, but they are proof you can find remission and live a vibrant, full life.  If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, I highly recommend tuning in to this encouraging and informative episode. The steps Noelle and Cassandra share can help put you on the path to healing and thriving as well. You can Connect with Cassandra and Noelle in the following ways:  Website – https://brightlythrive.comInstagram - @brightlythriveFacebook - @brightlythriveTikTok - @brightlythrive Eager to rewrite the narrative of your life and health? Coach’s Corner – 12 Fitness Truths I Was Wrong About

Text us a comment or question!Welcome to another solo episode of the Over 50 Health and Wellness Podcast. Today I'm sharing a bit about my personal yoga experience and reflecting on some things I've gotten wrong on my health journey.  I tried hot power yoga years ago - intense flows in a heated room. It was a sweaty struggle at first as an inflexible beginner surrounded by bendy yogis. But over time it helped me build strength, flexibility and mind-body connection.  I'm now re-exploring slower styles like yin yoga. It's challenging in different ways - sitting still and turning inward. But great for mobility and meditation.  Next I talk about things I’ve been wrong about. We all make mistakes and get things wrong, especially in ever-changing fields like health and fitness. I've learned a lot through trial and error. For example: - What works for weight loss long-term is more complex than just calories in and out.  - Consistent balanced training is better than all-out intensity. - Anyone can make a positive impact with health info; no one is too unimportant. The key is staying humble and open to growth. It's uncomfortable admitting when we're wrong, but that's how we improve. I hope this reflection provides some value. Thanks for listening - stay strong! Coach's Corner - Should You Consider Investing in a Coach?

Text us a comment or question! In this episode I focus on the value of coaching for those of us over 50 and how it can help in achieving health and fitness goals.  I start with a disclaimer that I make my living as a coach, so I'm certainly not an unbiased person on this topic. However, I've also personally spent a lot of money on coaches and programs for my own health and fitness journey over the years. I discuss what a good coach can provide, including expertise, accountability, emotional support, and a willingness to meet you where you are. Good coaches should have certifications, experience working with similar clients to you, and references or testimonials. They should be good communicators, take a holistic approach, and help you feel connected on your health journey.  I then talk about some red flags to watch out for when looking for a coach. These include a one-size-fits-all approach, programs marketed as for "everyone", pushy sales tactics, lack of transparency, and hiding pricing. A good coach should clearly explain their methods and pricing without pressuring you. When considering investing in a coach, don't just look at the price tag - think about the value of their expertise and the lasting impact on your health. Improved vitality and confidence don't have a fixed price.  In the end, investing in a coach is committing to your future self and optimal health in the second half of life. It's worth considering if you want to show up as the strongest version of yourself.  Want to rewrite the narrative of your life and health? Coach's Corner - From Insecure to Unstoppable: Carla's Journey to Becoming a Coach

Text us a comment or question!Today I want to share with you the inspiring story of my long-time client Carla. Carla has been on an amazing health and weight loss journey, overcoming a lifetime of struggles with her body image and self-confidence. Growing up overweight and insecure, Carla tried endless diets and programs in an attempt to lose weight, but nothing ever seemed to work long-term.  Finally, in 2006 she made the drastic decision to undergo gastric bypass surgery as a "last resort." Amazingly, Carla reached her goal weight of 150 lbs within a year and a half after surgery, and has managed to maintain it ever since.  This surgery was not a simple fix - it required Carla to make major changes to her lifestyle and mindset in order to see lasting results.  Today Carla is focusing more on her psychology and personal growth than just nutrition and exercise. She still battles the voice inside telling her she's "not good enough," a remnant of her difficult childhood and adolescent experiences. But Carla is dedicated to her continual improvement and showing up as the best, most positive version of herself in all areas of life.  Carla has now decided to become a certified nutrition coach herself! She wants to pay forward everything she has learned on her journey and help others who are struggling with their weight and self-image. Carla is starting the process of nutrition coaching certification training to be able to impact and transform lives. At the end of this episode I put out a call-to-action for any listeners who may be interested in receiving free coaching from Carla over the next couple months as she goes through the certification program. This is a great opportunity to both help Carla complete the required practice coaching hours, and also get personalized guidance and support for your own health goals entirely for free. If you are interested, simply send me an email (at coach@silveredgefitness.com) briefly explaining your background and goals, and I’ll forward it along to Carla. Carla's story reminds us that sustainable health and weight loss requires a mindset shift above all else. Her journey demonstrates the incredible power we have to take control of our lives and become the person we wish to be. As you’ll hear, I’m clearly very inspired by Carla's perseverance and personal growth, and I’m certain she will make an amazing coach herself. This episode provides a motivational and uplifting story about overcoming the odds to achieve our dreams.👉 Join The Silver Edge Collective today and start building a lean, strong, healthy body you love for the rest of your life! https://go.silveredgefitness.com/silver-edge-collective
