Episode 40: Garth Barfoot (86 year old marathon runner and Ironman triathlete)
86-year-old Garth Barfoot is in London at the time of posting this (participating in the 2022 London marathon). He has had an incredible career in real estate (Barfoot and Thompson). But it’s through his feats in endurance running and triathlon events that I know him. What makes Garth even more remarkable is his entry to the sport- he didn’t start competing until his late 50’s, proving it’s never too late to do something that seems impossibly hard.Dom Hosted on Acast. In this bite sized clip, taken from the full conversation with Sir John Kirwan, he explains the running training he did that lead him to score a length of the field try against Italy in the 1987 Rugby World Cup. One of the greatest All Black tries of all time. You can watch that incredible try right here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzb55_PVvRwIf you enjoy this story, you should check out the entire conversation with JK. Episode 39: Sir John Kirwan
Sir John Kirwan is an All Black legend. But its what he has done since retiring from sport that has made him an all-round legend.15 years ago JK reluctantly spoke publicly about his depression and mental health struggles (we discuss his reluctance in this chat- I won't tell you who pushed him into doing it!)I’m absolutely fizzing about sharing this one- just in time for Mental Health awareness week in New Zealand- Sir John Kirwan. Mental health has never had more chat that what it currently gets. This guy was the trailblazer. NOBODY really talked about this stuff publicly before Sir John. There are so many tips, tricks and tools from JK in this conversation that we can all use to improve our mental health. We also reminisce a little bit about his time as a butcher, an All Black and a DB Bitter Warrior. If this episode triggers anything, PLEASE chat to someone you trust. Or text 1737 anytime (NZ). You’ll get to chat to a trained counsellor.Dom Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 38: Nikki Kaye
Nikki Kaye is best known as being the former deputy leader of the National party while it was in opposition (and also a high profile cabinet minister during one of the parties most successful stints in power, under John Key). But she is so much more than that. She’s done the coast to coast multi sport event a few times and was even an age group running champ in her teens. She is also a cancer survivor- this was a diagnosis she got when she was holding down the job of a Cabinet minister that saw her chalking up 100 hour work weeks. We cover alot of stuff in this conversation and she really opens up in the second half when we get to the real important stuff- like the cancer, mental wellbeing and therapy, she could not have been more open than she was. And I really thank her for that.I really enjoyed this chat with Nikki and I hope you guys do as well.Dom. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Bite size: Brad Smeele discusses Suzie (the woman who helped him find peace with his new life as a quadraplegic)
This bite sized episode comes from the full length conversation with Brad Smeele, pro wakeboarder turned quadraplegic andn ow a best selling author! The idea of this snippet is to serve as, I guess, like a trailer on Netflix to decide if you want to hear more. Or pehaps you are time-poor and can't spare a whole hour (maybe after hearing a bite size episode you will decide to go back to the full length episode when you do have time). In this snippet, Brad discusses Suzie, a remarkable Auckland Kinesiologist who helped him with muscle injuries pre-accident, then helped him retrain his mind and belief systems post accident. Brad talks about Suzie and the lessons learned in great detail in his book, "Owning Up." Thanks to Suzies incredible teachings and now Brads generositiy in sharing those teachings, we can all get something from this.Hope you like it.Dom Hosted on Acast. Episode 37: Brad Smeele (Pro wakeboarder turned quadraplegic, now best-selling author)
Brad Smeele was one of the first guests on the podcast (episode 4, March 2022). He now becomes the first guest I've had on twice. The first episode with Brad is one that I still get messages about most weeks. I think this conversation will be just as impactful. So many lessons in here and a look inside his best selling book which has just come out, "Owning it." Its a great book- I read the entire thing (and its a big-ass book). Brad wrote the whole thing, all 500,000 words using a mouth stylus and tapping on his iPhone screen woodpecker style. Its a mind blowing achievement.Hope you guys enjoy Brads company as much as I do.
