Michelle Boland on Lessons Learned in Running and Coaching

If you work with gen pop clients or runners that are struggling with nagging aches and pains, then this episode is a must-listen. Dr. Michelle Boland is a certified strength and conditioning coach with distinction and owner of Michelle Boland Training, LLC. Michelle was previously the Director of Education at a private training facility and has several years experience as a Strength and Conditioning Coach for a D1 collegiate institution. Michelle specializes in movement biomechanics, athletic development, and improving fitness while addressing nagging pain or injuries that may be limiting performance. And in this episode, I think there’s some great discussion about how to help these clients the most when it comes to writing their programs and training them in the gym.   When they walk in – BOOM! – they should feel like a part of the community. – Michelle Boland   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: A little bit about Michelle and what she’s been up to since the last time she was on the show. Michelle tries to help me understand her passion for running (which I tend to loathe) The biggest gaps she sees when training runners, and how we can address those in the weight room. Why focusing on foot contacts is such a critical piece of the puzzle for runners. Michelle’s thoughts on moving from coach to client after working with Dan Sanzo. Why EVERY COACH should put themselves in an environment where they are being coached. The biggest lessons Michelle has learned training gen pop clients. What she wishes she knew when she was training clients 5-10 years ago. Thinking forward, how Michelle wants to grow and evolve over the next 5-10 years. Thoughts on her “Can You See the Difference” IG posts, and why they’re so helpful to both coaches and clients alike. A really fun lightning round where we talk about Coach Mike Boyle, favorite runs of 2023, and running goals for 2024.     Connect with Michelle: Michelle’s Instagram More Train, Less Pain Podcast   Related Content: Building a Principles-Based Approach to Training with Michelle Boland Michelle Boland on Resets, Asymmetry and Variability Days Dan Sanzo on Mindset, Coaching and Becoming a Mentor Menachem Brodie on Strength Training for the Competitive Cyclist Mark Fisher on Unicorns, Ninjas and Business Success Alwyn Cosgrove on Fat Loss Training, Mentorship and Paying it Forward Pat Rigsby on Building Your Ideal Fitness Business Unreasonable Hospitality Book   Stop the Frustration! Gen Pop Programming, Flywheel Training and Breathing Exercises (October Q&A)

We’re BAAAACCCKKKKK! It’s been a hot minute since I did a Q&A episode, but we’ve got some great questions this time around. With topics ranging from breathing exercises, to developing training programs for gen pop athletes, to my thoughts on flywheel training, we cover a ton of ground in this episode. So enough from me – let’s do it!   If it’s possible, this was my best and the worst off-season of all-time…and that’s the best way I can explain it! – MR   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: What’s new in my life, kiddo birthdays, and ALL of the travel. A cool, upcoming event you’re going to want to learn more about! Reflections on my 23rd year of coaching What I did well this off-season, and some areas I really need to improve on next year My goals for the 2024 basketball off-season Why I blew up and streamlined all of our Instagram accounts How I categorize exercises like chops and lifts, and where they fit into my programming How I design and layout training programs for gen pop athletes Why it’s so important to have real goals for gen pop athletes – even if the deadlines are somewhat artificial Where I use breathing exercises in my workouts How the rationale changes if you using breathing exercises pre- vs. post-workout My thoughts on flywheel training, and if it can replace traditional free weights Dealing with and giving feedback to difficult coaches Where should mobility and stability exercises fit into a program My thoughts on Harry Mack     Related Links: Podcasts Mentioned Alex Natera on Athletic Assessments, Isometric Training and Repeat Power Ability Mark Fisher on Unicorns, Ninjas and Business Success Updated Instagram Pages: Robertson Training Systems IFAST Basketball IFAST Gym Show Sponsors Hawkin Dynamics Exerfly   Stop the Frustration! Eric Schmitt on Program Design and Agile Periodization in the NBA

If you’ve ever wondered how to write training programs for an NBA athlete, you’re going to love this episode. Whether we’re talking about off-season development, managing the grind of an 82-game season, or bringing an injured athlete back to 100%, today’s guest has seen it all. Eric Schmitt is in his fifth year as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach with the Memphis Grizzlies. And prior to his arrival in Memphis, he served as the Director of Sports Performance at the University of California, Santa Barbara from 2016-2019, and he came to UCSB after serving as an Assistant Sports Performance Director at UCLA from 2013-2016. And in this episode, Eric and I are going to take a deep dive into program design for NBA athletes.   By just training you can get a good idea if someone has been training…and if someone hasn’t been training that’s pretty evident as well. So you can treat that session like an evaluation without having to go through more formal testing measures. – Eric Schmitt   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: Eric’s background and how he got started in the world of physical preparation. The exit interview process, and how he goes about setting goals for the off-season. Why frequently tapping into and talking to your athletes sets the stage for long-term success. How private S&C coaches can best integrate with NBA coaches to get the best results for the athlete. Why bouncing around from city-to-city may look cool on the ‘gram, but ultimately hampers development. The role of transparency in the communication process, and why this is so critical to an athletes success. The intake and evaluation process athletes go through when they report for pre-season training camp. Why Roy Hibbert told me he wasn’t doing any testing or evaluation for at least the first week of our training together. Nerding out on program design: The micro, meso and macrocycles the Grizz use to plan and periodize the in-season. Why utilizing minimum effective dose is crucial, and how much work you REALLY NEED to maintain strength qualities. Return to play, and how to effectively collaborate between athletic trainers, physical therapists and strength coaches.     Connect with Eric: Eric Schmitt IG   Related Links: Chris Chase on the Trainable Exercise Menu   IFAST University is BACK! Bill Hartman on How Body Shapes Drive Movement and Performance

Have you ever wondered why some athletic endeavors come so easily to certain people? For instance, some people can just jump out of the gym. Others can run for days and never seem to tire. And some can squat or deadlift the equivalent of a compact car while barely breaking a sweat! Well if you’ve ever wondered how body shapes impact your ability to express athleticism then THIS is the show for you. Bill Hartman is known for finding solution for people in pain that have failed with other forms of treatment. He’s the owner of IFAST Physical Therapy, and my business partner at Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training for over 15 years now. But beyond his skills as a physical therapist, he’s probably more well-known these days for creating what he describes as “The Model” – which is a truly unique way to looking at human movement, and what we’ll be focusing on in this show.   All measurements on the table are dirty. All movements are multi-factorial. But the goal is to start to shift the probabilities in our favor. – Bill Hartman   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: A little bit about Bill, and what’s new since the last time we were on the show. What prompted him to create “The Model.” The two archetypes, and why having a Wide or Narrow infrasternal angle (ISA) impacts your movement. What’s the difference between an archetype and a configuration? And why should you care? Why Bill took the standard, 3-plane movement model and condensed it down to one. The role of table testing in his assessment process. Should trainers and coaches take them time to learn table tests? And if so, where should they start? Bill’s thoughts on the gait cycle, and why foot contacts are so important for improving movement strategy. Why “flat feet” aren’t necessarily a bad thing. How shifting your center of gravity back can unlock your mobility and reduce pain in the ankles, knees, hips and lower back. What Bill wished he knew earlier in the process, and what he’s working on now to take his model to the next level. Last but not least, a really found lightning round where we talk Van Halen concerts, 80’s movies, and Bill’s budding music career.     Connect with Bill: Bill’s Website Bill’s Instagram Bill’s YouTube Page   Related Links: IFAST University Reconsider Website Reconsider Podcast   IFAST University is BACK!
