Derek Hansen: Why Are We Seeing More Achilles Tendon Ruptures Than Ever Before?

Derek Hansen been working with athletes in speed, strength and power sports since 1988. Originally working in Track and Field, Derek has expanded his services to assist athletes in all sports with an emphasis on speed development. He has since worked with some of the top performers in the world as a coach and a consultant – including Olympic medalists, world record holders, Canadian National team athletes, professional sports organizations, and professional athletes from numerous sports. And in today’s episode, Derek and I are going to take a deep dive into Achilles tendon tears – an issue that’s growing increasingly common in both the general population and athletes alike.   Everybody says, “Well that’s the fastest track spike…let’s turn soccer shoes and football cleats into a track spike because we want them to run faster.” So now you have a shoe that’s light and stiff, but doesn’t have the width and structure to be stable. – Derek Hansen   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: A quick bio of Derek, and what’s new since the last time we chatted. What got Derek so interested in the topic of Achilles tears. The numbers what show us Achilles tendon ruptures on the rise, and why he thinks we’re seeing that. How age impacts the Achilles tendon – and why sometimes younger athletes may actually be at increased risk! Why defensive players in the NFL may be at an increased risk when compared to their offensive counterparts. The movement strategies that may happen prior to an Achilles tear. Why we’re actually starting to see Achilles ruptures occur in acceleration and sprinting, and what that tell us about our training programs. The role of previous history on Achilles injury, and why we need to be looking at injury history and performance on BOTH sides of the body. Derek’s thoughts on the “Exposed Window:” What it is, and why we need to be protective of our athletes during this time. Can we just blame it all on turf? We dive into the nuance of this argument, and why there’s more to this question (especially in the NFL). The interaction between surface and footwear, and how all of that impacts loading on the connective tissues and joints. Derek’s overall thoughts on training, and how you can start to build a holistic training program that improves performance while limiting exposure to potential Achilles issues.     Connect with Derek: SprintCoach.com RunningMechanics.com Derek Hasen on Instagram Running Mechanics on Instagram   Related Links: Physical Preparation with Derek Hansen Derek Hansen on Con Ed, Microdosing, and Bringing Speed Training to the Masses Derek’s Achilles article Adam Petway and Matt Jordan research on Achilles tears in the NBA Dr. Keith Baar on Building Bulletproof Tendons Jarrod Antflick Podcast   Stop the Frustration! Dr. Stuart McGill on Assessing, Rehabbing and Training the Spine

Dr. Stuart McGill is often considered to be the world’s foremost expert on spinal biomechanics. His patient list ranges from the general population to some of the world’s most elites athletes, and his work has produced over 240 peer reviewed journal papers and 4 books. In this mashed up replay from two of my most popular episodes, Dr. McGill and I cover a wide range of topics – from lower back movement assessments to program design and everything in between, if you have questions about the lower back or core, Dr. McGill is your guy. And in case you didn’t pick up on it in my intro, I want to say it again here: Dr. McGill has been one of the most influential people in my life as a coach. His work has heavily influenced me throughout my career, and I’ll be forever grateful for both his mentorship and kindness over the years. Now let’s jump in and talk about backs!   In the UFC the strikers with the bigger muscles end up “pushing” their punches – they’re slower because the use muscle. The ones who strike the hardest are the ones who create the “pulsive” strength. – Dr. Stuart McGill   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: What led Dr. McGill to the world of physical preparation and back rehabilitation. The assessment process Dr. McGill takes his patients and clients through. How the assessment process dictates and drives the training process. The reasoning behind using pain-free movement to expand the movement menu. Virtual Surgery: What it is, and why you should be using it. The worst back he’s ever seen, as well as one of the best results he’s ever had. Tightening the screws – is there anything Dr. McGill is doing differently today versus a year ago? Why the traditional model is outdated, and his thoughts on a superior model for rehabilitation. Updates on what life is like since retiring from teaching. How spinal type influences athletic performance. The concepts of stiffness, relaxation and impulse, and how they impact athletic movement. How rehabilitation approaches differ (and perhaps more importantly, are similar) between the lay population and elite athletes. His thoughts on flexibility for the spine. A shocking stat regarding injuries and personal training, and the advice he would give to young trainers and coaches to help keep them healthy. Real talk: Of his four books, does he have a favorite? Our always popular lightning round where we talk about his favorite summer past time, why he doesn’t miss teaching, and what’s next for Dr. McGill.     Connect with Dr. McGill: BackFitPro.com   Stop the Frustration! 3 Questions You MUST Answer to Be a Successful Trainer or Coach

If you’re serious about becoming a better trainer or coach, at some point you need to ask yourself some big questions. For instance, what’s your philosophy when it comes to training? What groups or populations do you want to serve? And assuming this is a career (and not a hobby), what are you going to charge for your time? While these questions may sound simple at first glance, they’re definitely not easy. So in today’s episode, I’m going to take you step-by-step through these questions and help you figure out what’s most important TO YOU as a trainer or coach.   What do you truly believe in when it comes to training? What are the overarching principles you can follow? – Mike Robertson   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: How training broken powerlifters helped me form my training philosophy. Why your philosophy needs to be rooted in principles versus specific training mediums. The importance of working with a broad swath of clients and athletes early-on in your career. How my wide-ranging, general training background has served me well as I’m now more specialized. Questions you can ask yourself to figure out WHO you should be training, or who “your people” are. Is training a hobby for you? Or a career? And how does that impact your rates? The sweet spot of pricing, and my thoughts on where it’s easiest to be successful over the long-haul. Three side notes you absolutely MUST LISTEN to with regards to your pricing (this section alone will save you a lot of headaches if you take my advice!)     Related Links: The Derrick Rose Vertical Jump Program   Stop the Frustration! Kevin Neeld on FAI, Movement Variability, and Eccentric Training in Ice Hockey

Kevin Neeld is the Head Performance Coach for the Boston Bruins, where he oversees all aspects of designing and implementing the team’s performance training program, as well as monitoring the players’ performance, workload and recovery. Prior to his time in Boston, Kevin spent 2 years as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for the San Jose Sharks after serving as the director of a private sports performance facility in New Jersey for 7 years, working with pro, college, junior and elite level youth hockey players. He also served as a strength and conditioning coach with the U.S. Women’s Olympic Ice Hockey Team for 5 years. This episode is chock-full of great information, as we break down topics like movement variability, how to train the brakes and build better deceleration, and what he’s learned working in professional sports for the past 7 years.   I think of movement variability in two buckets: There’s micro-movement variability on the individual joint level, and macro-movement variability which is more the global movement patterns and movement sequencing.  – Kevin Neeld   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: The formal bio/intro, and what’s new in Kevin’s world. How he addresses and works around FAI (femoral acetabular impingement) with his athletes. His current thoughts on movement variability, and how he address this throughout his programs. How Kevin is training the brakes and improving deceleration with his athletes. The various eccentric training methods he’s using in his programs. Kevin’s thoughts on how you can incorporate plyos into a program without sacrificing strength. Lessons he’s learned during his 7 years working in the NHL. The mistakes he’s made, and how he’s grown and evolved from them. And last but not least, Kevin’s professional goals for the upcoming year!   Connect with Kevin: KevinNeeld.com Kevin on Instagram   Related Links: Matthew Ibrahim on Building the Brakes and Training Deceleration   Stop the Frustration! Pat Rigsby on Accountability, Winning the Week, and “The Process”

Pat Rigsby is a fitness business coach who has been in the industry since 1994. Growing up in Portsmouth, Ohio, Pat never had an interest in entrepreneurship and wanted to be a Major League Baseball player. And even though he had a season in professional baseball, he eventually realized playing the sport wasn’t his calling and set his sights on coaching. Since starting that first fitness business, Pat has owned, or co-owned, over 32 businesses in the industry, from health clubs to local training facilities and franchises. And now he runs the Ideal Business Academy, where he helps fitness pros create their own, unique ideal business. In this episode, Pat and I talk about the evolution of HIS ideal business, the importance of meeting clients and customers where they’re at, and how he’s using accountability coaching to see even more success. People want what they want, and they’re not going to be apologetic about it – so we need to meet them where they are. – Pat Rigsby This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: What’s new with Pat and the Ideal Business Academy (IBA). How the idea of the IBA originally came about. The steps Pat takes to help a trainer, coach or rehab professional create THEIR OWN ideal business. Why it’s so important to meet people where they are, versus following a cookie-cutter approach to business development. How he’s integrating more accountability into this programs, and why this is making such a profound impact. What’s working RIGHT NOW with regards to marketing and selling in the fitness space. Pat’s prediction on what will happen in the next 5-10 years with regards to fitness businesses. An overview of “The Process” – and why we’re so excited to be pushing it out there!
